I stumbled upon this bakery while getting my vehicle repaired in the area. The smell in the area was amazing. Located in a mainly industrial area, there is parking towards the side and rear of the building. Inside there are rows and shelves of fresh breads, danishes, strudels, pies, focaccia, cookies, croissants and even a grocery cart of baguettes. I tried an apple danish on this occasion. The pastry was flaky with a crispy exterior but a nice softness inside. The apple filing had real apple slices and was sweet and slightly sticky. Everything was well balanced and delicious. It has its own style. Compared to those big-name, well-branded pastry houses in shopping malls, danishes here are quite different. Bigger in size for sure, which is obvious. They are seriously filling because of this. Freshly made with no doubts to me, as you can smell the baking process in the building. However, they are much softer even after a good reheating in an oven. If you are looking for some good pasties crunchiness, here might not be the best to meet your expectations. This European-inspired bakery has been around since the 1960's! They make old-school bread, pastries, pies, and pastries. As an amateur baker, I don't purchase items that often, but when I'm in the area, I do enjoy their whole wheat hamburger buns, cinnamon rolls, and Bienenstich (German Bee Sting cake). The first time I had this cake, I thought, wow, this is amazing! The next few times I bought it, there were inconsistencies, so I haven't purchased it again. I'm not sure if it's still available, but it's a very decadent and delicious custard cake with almonds! I usually speak with Rose Mary, who is absolutely engaging and super friendly! It can get very busy on weekends, and they sell out of popular items very early in the morning. Parking is a bit awkward (parallel to the bakery), with the exit wrapped around the back. read more

A wonderful bakery that's a bit hidden on a side street among an industrial area. But don't let that sway your impressions of this bakery. There's a steady turnover (no pun intended) of baked goods and pastries are made fresh. My family has been coming here for a very long time to get their apple strudel. Unfortunately they sold out today, so we opted for their cherry strudel, 2 raisin buns, and a loaf of their flax seed bread. The strudel is excellent and we asked for without sugar. The raisin buns have a bit of chewiness to it. And the flax seed is much better than the ones in the grocery stores. read more

This hidden gem is within walking distance from me which delights me as much as it frightens me. I usually walk there when it just opens so i can snatch up as many treats as possible. There is already a line at 8 am these days but they take your order while you wait in line so the wait isn't very long. They have breads, danishes, pizza dough, puff pastry dough, dinner rolls, pies, and pretzels. I reward myself for walking there by eating freshly baked pretzels on my way back home but dipping it in some melted cheese is also fantastic. Last but not least, i want to draw your attention to their honey almond cake. The honey almond cake is such a treat to eat and is less than $5! It's not too sweet, creamy, crunchy, and the thin layer of cake is so fluffy. It is definitely big enough to split between 2 people, but tasty enough to devour alone (don't judge me). read more

A bakery tucked away in a commercial area. I assume they're goods are sold in supermarkets or other cafes that don't bake their own stuff. Prices are good, tons of bread and pastry options. I went on a saturday morning, and they were quite busy. A short lineup outside, but that's due to them only allowing a handful of people inside. They rearranged the interior to better allow for social distancing and flow of traffic. But customer seem to be greedy and still come and grab stuff infront of you. But i don't see a point, cuz there's only one way out, and you will eventually walk by the items anyways.....so they could have waited. Picked up a loaf of light rye, pound cake, cheese and apricot danish, some pretzels, and an apple strudel. The bread is better than the pastries. Pound cake i would say stay away from totally, i don't think they used butter in there, just tasted oily. the rest of the pastries tasted like normal supermarket pastries, again, not crispy and buttery tasting. Pricing is good, but you do get what you pay for. if i lived closer i would go and buy their bread more often, but definitely nothing to drive out of the way for. read more

Whenever I'm lazy and need to get something up for a party, I always make my way to Montmartre Bakery to pick up their strudels since it's always a hit. Everything here is made fresh daily and since it's a wholesaler, the prices are incredibly cheap. Strudels come in flavours like apple ($5.50), cherry ($6.10) and blueberry ($6.50) and are TWO FEET LONG!!! I usually choose to get half a strudel (for half the price of course) so I can get more than one flavour. The strudels are nice and flakey and I'll usually get it topped off with icing sugar if I'm heading straight to the party afterwards. This time I got the cherry and blueberry strudels. The cherry has a nice tart flavour and the blueberry is packed with tonnes of fresh blueberries and jam. Show up with these babies and you'll be bound to be asked where these magical pastries came from. I would also recommend grabbing a few apple turnovers (only $1) if you're there! They are divine. The pastry is light and flakey and packed with thick pieces of warm, tender spiced apples in the filling. And best of all, the top of the turnover is sprinkled with coarse cinnamon sugar giving it a delicious crunch. The fresh pretzels are also a good option at 95¢ each, I usually pick up at least 3-4... Soft & chewy with just the right amount of kosher salt. I'll be honest, it was a bit of a carb overload but every bite was absolutely delicious. Danish are a steal at $1.00 each - they are HUGE. Made fresh daily, the pastry is light and flaky and drizzled with icing. The blueberry danish had a bold flavour and I love that you can even pick out little pieces of fresh blueberries in the fruit filling. The apricot custard was my favourite though. There was a pretty large piece of apricot wrapped in the pastry and the creamy custard really brought the fruit and pastry together well. Be forwarned that this is not a fancy bakery where you can sit down and eat - definitely takeout only. And I would also recommend to go early as almost all the shelves will be cleared out if you go during the last hour of operation. read more

Really nice place to grab some break for super. Everything is so soft and fresh. I got some sliced bread, buns, a piece of butter cake and an apple strudel, all for under 10$! You can't go wrong. The strudel and cake was the perfect combination of sweet and softness, I couldn't believe it. And they give a really large amount. The place itself is pretty hard to get to, you have to drive down a bit and once you park you have to go through the side door, not the front door. Like everybody else is saying here, this is not a fancy bakery. You will not expect something for occasions or a place to sit and relax. There are the shop and factory in a big space. I went there on Saturday early afternoon and many things were already gone. There was a long line for the cashiers. I got a loaf of bread and a whole apple pie and the prices were good like Walmart or No frills. Breads and pies are pretty good and prices are good. I have been going to Montmartre Bakery for more than 20 years. Their products, especially the pies and strudels has always been the best for quality & value. Of course, COVID-19 is not going to stop me from craving their pies. Early in this lockdown, they already re-organized their front area to better served their customer in a safe and responsible manner. The lady who greets the customers in the front is the gem of the store. She made sure everyone was keeping a safe social distance between each other. During one of the my visit, there was a problem will my order, she was very empathetic and helped me. She is very friendly, very courteous, and very customer oriented. Love this hidden bread factory in scarborough. The bread is always made fresh daily. Their gluten free bread available on thursday with pre order is great. My favorite bread of theirs is the sunflower bread, each piece of bread is infused with sunflower seeds. Also their breas stays fresh for quite a while. I put it in the fridge and toast it and it taste like it was freshly made. Their pizza dough is also good too. I love to preoder online and pick it up at the designated time i choose. Please note you do not receive any confirmatio email/call, so make sure you save a copy of what you ordered to ensure you receive everything on the day you go bread up your freshly baked goodness. Love the cherry strudel, which can be bought in full-size three-foot-long monsters, or 1/2 size as well, and are classic and exactly what you'd expect, right down to the flaky pastry and huge crystals of sugar dotting the tops. Personally, I could go for a little more pastry and a little more filling, but that's a minor quibble, they are delicious and the full length version certainly will make a dramatic entry to any party or potluck. read more

wow!! This is a hidden BAKERY staple in Scarborough that's been around for years. Its truly a hidden gem that located on a side street off of Midland. A famous German (though it sounds French) is serving up some traditional baked goods that have always been reasonably priced. Come here early if you want first choice of baked goods because by the afternoon, there's not a lot left over. Personally I am a big fan of their apple strudel, baked pies and coooooookies. Fantastic German bakery! My friend and I went specifically for strudel and soft pretzels. The place is basically a wholesale bakery that is also open to the public. The prices are simply amazing. They have a variety of strudel (apple, blueberry, etc), they are HUGE (about 2 feet long) and only $4.00! You can also buy half a strudel, which is plenty as dessert for a family of six. There is also Struesel (a crumbly coffee cake with fruit), Danishes, and more. The fresh buns smell wonderful, they have a large variety of cookies as well. We also bought soft pretzels and pretzel buns, everything was chewy goodness. We even ate buns on the drive home! read more

*Between 3-3.5 stars* Good bakery in Scarborough. I went specifically after hearing about its strudels, pretzels, and croissants. Not the best in city, I feel, but decent in Scarborough. I arrived around 5pm. I purchased some croissants, pretzels, dinner rolls, and, of course, their strudels in apple and cherry. I probably with added in some danishes and carrot cake into my purchase, but they were sold out. I really wanted a struesel, but they were sold out. *The croissants are good when fresh. Though dry looking because it doesn't after the sheen that other places have on their croissants (from the brush of butter on top), the croissants are airy with a light buttery touch. *The pretzels are exactly as the other reviewer described: soft, chewy with the right amount of salt. Not hard! Too often I've hard a hard and stale pretzel sold as "fresh." The dinner rolls are alright. Not particularly special; tastes about the same as grocery in-store bakery offerings. But, they were nearly all sold out when I arrived at Montmartre. (I purchased the last white dinner roll dozens and one of three remaining whole wheat dinner roll bags.) Convenience, perhaps? The pricing posted for the strudels is for the entire strudel, which is about two feet long. I didn't ask and ended up with two large strudels. I would have purchased the blueberry, too, but seeing how I got two strudels already and I didn't want to speak up as there was a line forming, so I passed on the blueberry. I passed on the extra sugar sprinkle. Both the apple and cherry were quite good. Not overly sweet with a good portion of filling. Good visible chunks of fruit. The pastry is flakey (as a strudel should be) with little bits falling out as you slice it into smaller portions. The end pieces are a little bit crunchy, and I would argue, are the best parts of the strudel. The cherry is a bit more messy since the cherries and the jam have (even) more of a tendency to leak out and escape. I would only add the extra sugar sprinkle for presentation for guests. Parking is available in front of its entrance. Not very ample, but people walk in and out of the bakery very quickly. Around 10-20 spots. It's a good bakery, and I would head over again to sample their goods. *Side note: If you go early on Saturday mornings, some parents bring their children, and in turn, may touch some of baked goods with their bare hands. (I have seen this.)
