After a huge breakfast, we needed to walk and discovered this trail, which is more for biking, but there were walkers and joggers too. The trail is well maintained and there are mile markers and good signage. The stream along the side is nice to hear. My biggest downside is all the people who don't clean up after their dogs. Bike riders may not notice it so much, but for walkers, it's everywhere. read more

Trail is quite scenic and one can really connect with nature, as it changes throughout the day from birds chirping in the morning, to deer moving around by evening. Mile 0 starts near Coraopolis and the trail goes practically to infinity and beyond, connecting with the panhandle trail, or continuing eastward to DC. Yes that's Washington DC. Absolutely the best place for trail biking in the region. They are constantly improving the trail with bridges (to decrease street crossings with cars). The trail is well maintained and wide enough to accommodate bikers and hikers of different abilities. The trail is scenic, and it's a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. The entire trail stretches 46 miles from Moon Township near Coraopolis to Clairton. It straddles both Washington and Allegheny Counties. read more

The Montour Trail is a 46 mile long multi-use non-motorized recreational rail-trail near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The trail begins near Coraopolis and ends in the City of Clairton. The trail connects from Clairton via Glassport via McKeesport to the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), a trail system that stretches over 330 miles from Pittsburgh to Washington, DC. There are still a few gaps in some parts of the trail, and some are currently under construction, but you can easily detour along the roads to ride the entire trail. This trail is spectacular to say the least! I decided to jump on with some friends and ride out and get a feel for it. Some foot traffic on the trail and other bikers everyone was nice and said hi. A few street crossing but not areas with heavy traffic so that was really nice. The trail was clean I didn't see any trash so good job to the trail crew! I'm big into mountain biking and did see some trails off the beaten path that looked like quad or dirt bike trails but did seem to have some bicycle marks on them. That would be interesting and fun to check out but just have to be carful because some of the areas are private property. The trail connects with the pan handle trail so I've rode a little on there as well and that was very lovely and lots of sights to see! read more

My husband and I are avid bike riders and we've always wanted to try the Montour Trail. The Montour runs in an arc around Pittsburgh. It currently begins in Coraopolis and will eventually work its way down to Clairton. Currently, multiple sections of the trail totaling over 40 miles are completed. New sections are being added each year. It's one of the earliest Rails-to-Trails conversions in Western Pennsylvania. According to my railfan husband, this was originally the Montour RR and it was abandoned in the early 1980s. It will eventually be a part of the Great Allegheny Passage Trail System. That system will eventually link Pittsburgh with Washington, DC and it's mine and Rick's goal to bike that entire distance. So on a beautiful September day Rick and I set out to ride the entire completed section. I hadn't been biking in a few weeks so I doubted I'd be able to do a 76 mile round trip! We came up with a novel solution. We started on the trailhead in Coraopolis and ride to Library. From there we'd load our bikes on the "T" and take that into Downtown, then change to the Coraopolis bus. The trail itself is an easy grade and most of it is crushed gravel. There are many scenic highlights along the way. You'll go through three tunnels--the Enlow Tunnel, the National Tunnel, and the Greer Tunnel. But my favorite is the 900+ foot long McDonald Trestle which takes you over the tree tops and spans the Panhandle Trail. The view from up there is spectacular. If you do ride, be advised that the trail is not complete in many places. There are some detours onto the local highways so be careful. Also pack a lunch, bring extra water, and make sure that your bike is in good shape before you leave. read more

We only did two miles in an hour, from the Cliff Mine Road entry to the first tunnel on the way to Enlow and Imperial. The trail is even, well groomed, and people seem to share the trail very well. Bikers, walkers, joggers, dog runners ... they all follow this unspoken protocol. I'm asking Santa for a bike, so that I can ride and hit the trails en-force! read more

Great trail with a few road crossings here and there but also a great creek next to it that you get to look at with nice views for in suburban area And call me crazy but when we get a ton of rain I do like to kayak this Creek:)!!!!!! read more

I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon it while on a shopping trip in Robinson Township. This is a beautiful and convenient trail. Parking is distributed in small pockets at regular intervals along its length. Its well enough used to feel safe during the day but there is not much lighting for the night. It is well marked every half mile with mile markers. If I had a bike I am sure it would be great for a long ride since its over 40 miles. read more

We struggled to find the parking lot/trailhead but once we did we had a great bike ride. The trail itself was nicely maintained and our bike ride was extremely peaceful. We noticed quite a few picnic tables along the trail. I'm not a huge fan of crossing main roads while biking but it was part of the experience. I look forward to exploring more of the trail in the future. read more

The Montour Trail is fantastic for running and biking long distances. The Trail Council does a fabulous job of maintaining the conditions as well as raising money to provide signage and mile markers. My only wish would be for a clean public bathroom facility somewhere, but perhaps that will be a possibility in the future! This is one of the only trails in Pittsburgh with a gravel surface which is much kinder on your knees than pavement and certainly worth the occasional rock in your shoe frustration. read more

I love the trail! Walking outside with the trees, the running creek, and the fresh air. It can't be beat. I got a bike for Christmas and I can't wait to use it. I do wish that more of the trail was paved. That is why only 3 out of 5 stars. read more

CORAOPOLIS ENTRANCE is off busy RT 51 hard to find becareful sharp turn. There is 1 porta potty in the parking lot during warm weather, not winter.------- During the winter trail can get icy. The parking lot is plowed. Nice and flat for bike riding. Summer hot and crowded not much shade except sunrise/dusk. They have porta potties every couple miles/ occasional drinking fountains. Creek is stocked with trout for APRIL KIDS TROUT DERBY. Weekends and summer crowded. -----------------------------ALWAYS BRING A CELL PHONE---------- because during cold weather/weekdays it can be deserted if u fall off ur bike get hurt etc... i am a women and feel safe walking my medium sized loud vicious barking dog (its all show) i carry mace/knife also, yes, i am a little paranoid after a run in with a huge pitbull. I do see alot of lone female joggers at sunset so just make sure u tell someone one where ur going and bring the cell. ******There was a sex predator - further up the trail last year that was flashing his kibble and bits to the public, thank god he got caught and arrested via his face was on CCTV from a nearby building. The Coraopolis section doesnt have streetlights along the trail. U need a flashlight its really dark at night. BE SAFE. The farthest i have road my bike was MOONTOWNSHIP, it was flat. When i walk my dog from CORAOPOLIS parking lot to HASSAM RD/EWING MILLS its 3 miles round trip. Pretty lots of trees. read more

Great place to walk the dog or take a bike ride. Feels like your miles away from people, but very close to home. Very nicely kept and clean.

I did not realize that this is a business, but I love it. My son and I rode our bikes on the Montour Trail and the Great Allegheny Passage last year and would like to do both again this year. It is well maintained and the other walkers and riders were great. read more

A very nice trail. I actually remember when we use to have to wait for trains going through Imperial to pass on it before we could proceed it's been there so long and after that kind of traffic it wasn't used at all. Thank God they found a purpose for it. I'd suggest biking, walking, etc. early mornings in the summer as it gets humid, buggy and overcrowded with people later in the day when all the yuppies wake up. read more
