We reserved and paid via phone a cabin for the last weekend of May (2018). They guy that did the reservations told us our cabin number and offered to give us the receipt in person. We arrived on time for check-in and got the key to 'our cabin', when we open the door, surprise, it was another family in the cabin! We went back to the office and the receptionist said that this happen a lot, because some people do the reservations trough the phone and others trough the website. What? How irresponsable! He also explained that each cabin have 2 keys and that he keep one of the keys and the cabin occupants get the second key. He didn't understand why this cabin have 3 keys. But the true is that the front desk was so messy, towers of papers everywhere, the guy moved some stuff to get to the other stuff, it's was pretty bad. At the end, he called the owner and he agreed to give us another cabin. It is sad that they are so disorganized because the place outside is pretty and the cabins are not bad. I took a lot of pictures in the cute lake and enjoy the company of some friends that were staying in the campgrounds (trailers area) in front of the lake.

You could not ask for a more beautiful setting. It's a nice campground right on the lake with beautiful views. It has a wonderful restaurant and a small bar. There are cabins and a small motel there as well. The restroom and shower buildings were very clean. This is all In a forest setting. Whether you are just there to tent or you have a large rig, they can accommodate anyone. The fishing is great, the boating is wonderful and the hikes are long and scenic. The only negative thing I have to say (which did not effect my rating) is the check in process. Upon pulling in we stopped at the check-in booth where I was asked my last name then handed a parking pass and told where my site was. Unfortunately I was not informed about the Wi-Fi code nor was I handed a campground map. After I got set up I just made my way down to the main office and gathered everything I needed. I will definitely return next season

This place changed our lives. We drove into the San Isabel National Forest on Memorial Day weekend with our tent, no reservations and no idea where we would be able to stay for the weekend. As we trekked it further into the woods (for almost an hour) with our 2 kids we began thinking we might be in trouble when we stumbled across this little sign and almost missed the turn in. Once inside we found a friendly lady in the office that informed us she just happened to have some spots left but not for long. I think they were around $40/night. We were allowed to chose from any spot along the lake (this is where we started to get excited) with a fire box. After notifying us to put our food in our car so bears wouldn't try to get into our tents we went ventured ahead sure that the prettiest spots would already be taken. Our first view of the lake blew our minds. It's surrounded by mountains on both sides and you can see one of the Spanish Peaks in the background. There are tall trees everywhere and the tent spaces are incredible!! We could not have asked for a better spot and a week later we are still reeling from how lucky we got when we happened upon this park. With our tent right at the edge of the water and a stream running along the side we literally could not have asked for anything more. My 6 year old pulled in his first trout(s) here, my 2 year old sang while sitting on a log looking at the lake. It was truly magical. They had a restaurant with surprisingly good food, a store with anything you could really need in a pinch, clothing if you didn't pack enough, firewood, cabins, fish cleaning station, fishing and tackle items for sale. It was the whole package. The only downside is there were no showers. I was told the City of Trinity owns the park and they were "keeping up the bathrooms" and basically they became a health hazard they were so bad. So they decided to shut them down. We found a solution though!! The owners of the Cuchara Inn (Dani is her name) which is just up the mountain about 20 minutes (along a beautiful drive through the San Isabel forest) offered to let us use their showers in the Inn. She was happy to share them and even asked me to let other people know they are available so problem solved! Not only is Cuchara adorable but the shower was hot and the food at Luke's BBQ was awesome too!! Sooooo overall everything was perfect. Monument Park is a MUST SEE, MUST STOP, MUST DO atleast once. We will never forget our 3 days there. Check out the photos, no explanation needed!

Amazing place, friendly people, beauty abounds! Comfortable accommodations and the cafe is great. Good fishing.

This weekend we decided to venture in to the Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of the…read moreSan Isabel National Forest to enjoy the wildflowers and try our hand at fishing. The headwaters of the rainbow trout-stocked Purgatoire River run through Purgatoire Campground and we were lucky enough to pitch our tents just a few paces from it this weekend; the crashing and tumbling water providing a surprisingly perfect "white noise" each night for slumber. The area surrounding the river is absolutely stunning with wildflowers and dense aspen and conifer growth everywhere. And, as is usually the case, it isn't until after we experience a place such as this that I become curious about its history. This weekend was no exception. Just 30 minutes of research this morning revealed an intriguing irony: the attraction and abundant life that characterizes the Purgatoire River is shrouded in historical mystery, hardship, and death: "It was once thought that Spanish explorers, namely a party led by Francisco Leyva de Bonilla in 1593, were the first to visit the Purgatoire River in the sixteenth century. An attack by Native Americans killed all but one of the Bonilla party at some point after it left New Mexico and reached the Great Plains. The attack was initially thought to have occurred on the Purgatoire; the river was so named because of the unblessed Catholic souls that were allegedly sent to el purgatorio--purgatory--along its banks. The name stuck (its current version is French), but the river may be named for the souls of men who never reached it--the location of the Bonilla expedition's demise remains uncertain." (Ref: https://coloradoencyclopedia.org/article/las-animas-county) At any rate, it is well worth the 2-1/2 hour drive from Colorado Springs to visit this alluring area and imagine what it was like before paved roads, iPhones, and grocery stores. To get there: Purgatoire Campground GPS coordinates are: (Latitude, Longitude): 37.2525, -105.10917 37°15'9"N, 105°6'33"W From La Veta, Colorado, take State Route 12 south for 25.3 miles to Purgatoire campground sign. Turn right onto gravel Route 34. Go 0.2 miles to "T" intersection. Turn right and drive 4 miles on rough gravel road to campground. The campground is very clean and monitored by camp hosts, Helga and Larry. I recommend Site 4, in particular, because it sits on the river and is sandwiched in between just one other campsite to the right and open space and the 5-mile North Fork Trail trailhead to the left.

We actually had reservations further along at a national park but decided to shorten our driving distances for the day. We were able to make our reservation online. This is a very nice campground, with sites nicely spaced out and some nice amenities. We were in the Carpios Ridge campground which has 63 sites for RVs, trailers, and tents on a ridge 150' above the lake. We're actually pleased that our mapping app took us on an indirect route to the campground as our site did not have a water-view and we might have missed the lake otherwise! My understanding is that this is an Army Corps of Engineers (COE) campground that is managed by the state of Colorado. In April, 2024, the seven sites with full hookups were $41, with only 50 amp electricity: $36, and basic: $28. You also need to purchase a state of Colorado daily vehicle pass for $10. (This is expensive as we've stayed at other COE campgrounds for 1/2 off as holders of the NPS interagency senior pass, and without the need for a vehicle pass. $46 with state of Colorado management vs $18 were it COE management -- plus we had already paid for a site at Zapata Falls Campground that we wouldn't be using. The campground has clean restrooms and free showers (for campers only), as well as laundry facilities (in theory) and a book exchange. There are shared water spigots, as well as walking trails in the vicinity. There is also a shared dump station. The Visitors Center was already closed when we arrived and wasn't open yet when we left the following morning but we were able to buy our vehicle pass at a kiosk. We saw rangers patrolling the area. Only two concerns are worth noting. First, as already mentioned, the discrepancy between pricing of state and COE campgrounds. Also, the washing machine ate my $2 without the machine starting. More than the irritation of losing the $2, we really needed to do laundry after having been on the road for few week.

An Afternoon Well Spent !!…read more It has been many years since I've been to the Raton area and typically whenever I was in the area it was just a quick to use the bathroom or get gas. On this visit, it was on a Friday afternoon and I had a few hours to kill and wanted to actually see some of the area. I remembered from years past that there were some lakes up in the mountains that I had always wanted to see and now was my chance. The Park is only about 20 miles from Raton and the roads were not that busy. The drive up is really nice as you see mountains, hills ranches, and some great scenery. On the way to Lake Maloya I stopped at one of the smaller lakes, Lake Alice and spent about half an hour checking it out. There really isn't access to that lake but you can tell its frequented by anglers. It is a nice small scenic lake. I then made my way up to Lake Maloya which is a reservoir for the area and right on the Colorado border. The lake is magnificent!! On a nice warm summer day, there was a nice breeze and no bugs. There were boaters on the lake, some people canoeing and some campers but it was not that busy at all. I spent a good two hours stopping and driving farther up the lake until I came to the gate that takes you to Dorothy Lake ( for another time). The views are just amazing, I suggest bringing a canoe or kayak and spending a good day there. I'm not sure if there is swimming since I didn't see anyone swimming in the water. Next up was Sugarite Canyon, and when you stop at the main entrance they use the honour system where you pay, so please pay!!! I made my way to the visitors center and got a map of the trails. The canyon is a great place to hike and I saw no one else on the trail and felt like I had the place to myself. I can't describe how nice it was walking through the canyon, and all there is to see. I highly recommend hiking with a buddy since it is in a remote area and I saw a few different animal tracks as I made my way through the trails. In short, this area is worth a visit, you can spend a few hours there or a few days, its truly part of the magnificence that is New Mexico.

We took a 6 mile loop trail starting at the dam yesterday and saw NO ONE else. Lots of scat indicate there lots of moose and bear around, so be aware. There are numerous other trails as well add the aforementioned activities. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

We had done nothing out of the ordinary, no trash left outside, waste properly disposed of. The only thing we had to do was change the brakes on our car, drive the vechilce around, and was yelled at that we were going too fast despite no clear signage for speed limit. When warned we immediately stopped and apologized for any inconvenience that was caused met with more yelling from the staff rather than accepting the apology and cease in unwanted behavior immediately. When asked about the eviction note, we were told literally "We dont know, talk to Adam." Adam is apparently the owner. When I asked if I could have a phone number or contact info to reach him I was told no. There are no rules or regulations posted for the camp grounds posted or otherwise, no signage, not even a speed limit sign to officially post or regulate anything. Even when you pay, there is no info sheet or regulations sheet they give you so that you have the proper information for the park amenities and rules. The staff are rather rude in demeanor and very judgemental, seeming to take advantage of the fact there are no clear rules or regulations against anyone new to the park, anyone new to this little residential "clique" they have going on here. I wouldnt waste my money into these people's corrupt pockets or anyone else's in the town of Blanca for that matter. Spend your good money somewhere that at least has a hot shower and a good environment Edit, Adam later walked over to tell us the reason for the eviction was that they do not have people stay and pay month to month. I asked the lovely couple next door, whom seem to be and have been staying for quite some time, if they paid month to month and they confirmed that they do indeed stay and pay month to month. We had also initially been told they pay month to month as well, solidifying the fact that Adam is not trustworthy or reliable.
