This entire experience was top-notch. We debated just driving the scenic route ourselves, but this was a much better way to enjoy this spectacular area. Larry was our guide and he did a fantastic job of telling us about the various monuments, the culture and history of the area, and even helped take pictures of us around the monuments. Going on a guided tour got us into the backcountry area that is not part of the regular scenic trail. The trail is very rough in some spots and had very deep sand in many spots. I was thankful that we weren't navigating the trail in our own vehicle and could just sit back and enjoy the incredible beauty and peace of the area. Well worth the cost.

Travis blessing. Incredible sound and echos. Executed perfectly. Nothing short of magnificent!

Everything. Travis was our guide and what an amazing guide he was. Wonderful experience and very much worth the money spent. Have done this several times before but this was indeed the best yet. Will do it again and insist on Travis from now on. Or...as he taught me wish e ah no a ha. Go and learn what it means.

We had a great backcountry Monument Valley tour with Cheryl and Duffy for our private group. We had a fun ride off road in their outfitted trucks. The tour lasted 2 1/2 hours and we felt well taken care of. Never rushed and the views were beautiful. Listening to Duffy playing his flute and Cheryl signing were highlights of the trip. We learned so much about the Navajo people and their rich history. I highly recommend this trip and request Cheryl as your guide.

An absolutely incredible experience, our guide Sandrea was knowledgeable on Native culture sharing her experiences growing up in the Reservation. An experience you cannot get driving through on one's own. Skip the Jeep rental and book a Tribal Tour today.

Travis and Bobby performing with a flute and guitar. Beautiful music!

This was an incredible experience! Travis was our guide and we now know we had the best! He shared so much information and history about The Navajo Nation and the various tribes, I felt we came away really learning something. We were able to see so much including the restricted areas - absolutely stunning sights. Travis was so personable and engaging, we really enjoyed talking with him. We also had the pleasure of a couple of flute performances and one accompanied by guitar. Beautiful music and the meaning behind it so touching. I highly recommend this tour - be sure to ask for Travis!!

We had such a great time on our tour! Monument Valley is a magical place and our guide, Comasheena, made it even more special with her knowledge and insight. She even went above and beyond holding our little dogs so both of us could walk around various site. The whole event was exceptional.

Marjorie picked us up at the KOA at 5:30 am right on time. After one more pickup location, we were off to explore the monuments in the emerging light of sunrise. Marjorie was a fantastic tour guide, injecting just the right amount of history, geology, and humor in the tour. Since it was cold, we were in a van instead of open air jeep which was appreciated. Since this was an extended tour, we went into the backcountry and also experienced some local Navajo culture/history. Highly recommend this tour!

    Larry shared Diné music

We took this amazing tour with Larry, and felt very fortunate that we did. I've wanted to see Monument Valley since I was a child watching John Ford Westerns. I grew up to teach film, with a special interest in how Hollywood depicted Indigenous people and the history of conquest and its ideology. So this was a pilgrimage, and we were very lucky to see everything with a thoughtful, knowledgeable, and open-hearted guide who was willing to share with us the perspectives of his Diné/Navaho heritage. (I was a little concerned about riding all day in an open coach and trekking through desert--but it was a very easy day for me at 72, with a slight limp.) Larry's enthusiasm for the geological and cultural history of the area made the tour not only informative but breath-takingly vivid. The Valley is full of wonders but I'd never be able to appreciate them without a Native guide: we saw ancient pictographs up close, learned the traditions around the geological formations, scrambled up hills to prehistoric dwellings, and met local artisans and their lovely families. Larry shared with us his music and language. I will want to come back to this amazing place.

Nobody picks up the phone to answer questions. Tour definitely not worth it. A few "monuments" that don't show the scope one expects.

I'll discuss that first because until the company fixes this issue, it will lead to the same problem for other as we experienced. Here's the problem: when you book the tour, it tells you to meet the tour guide in the lobby of The View Hotel. On the website before booking, it says "Please meet your guide in the lobby of the View Hotel next to the bronze statue of a cowboy riding a horse." In the email confirmation, it says "Your tour guide will pick you up at the beautiful View Hotel lobby!" Pretty clear, right? We're supposed to meet the tour guide in the lobby. No ambiguity here. We arrived in the lobby a full 15 minutes ahead of our 9:00am pickup - we were warned that the tour would leave precisely on time. 9:00 came and went with no sign of the tour guide or his vehicle. I call the office and get voicemail, but don't leave a message. A minute later I get a text message from their bot inviting me to start a conversation. I explain the problem, and get another automatically-generated response: "Thanks for letting me know! I'll check with our team and get back to you shortly." Over the next 10 minutes I send a couple more clarification messages, and receive no response at all. So we're starting to fret. We have a flight to catch later in the day, so if we miss this tour we won't have an opportunity to rebook. Then after a few minutes, a tour guide from a _different_ company comes in, sees us, and says that the meeting point for tours is outside. We walk out of the hotel lobby, and don't see anything at all, because the tour pickup point is across the parking lot and down a hill, completely out of view from the hotel entrance. We walk down, arriving 10 minutes after the "prompt" departure time, and join our tour. We could have completely missed our tour because of the company's inability to maintain an accurate website. But we lucked out today. The company never called or texted back to provide us with updated instructions about where to meet, and the tour guide didn't attempt to find us either. We are grateful to the guide from the different company who made sure we got on the tour. So, this could easily be a 2-star or worse review for this experience. But the fact of the matter is that the tour was really great once we got started. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and entertaining. He gave us recommendations about where to take pictures and took a couple creative ones for us. He shared Navajo history, mythology, and his own personal experiences growing up in the Navajo nation. We saw some beautiful scenery which left us wanting more.

Last June, this information was not as known as it is now, and given our long-standing plans to see Monument Valley, my fiancé booked a horseback tour hosted by Roy Black's Awesome Horse Tours. What has since ensued has been a fascinating exhibition of dishonesty that would be laughable if it wasn't such a waste of time. Read on: | 7/4/20 tour booked on 6/26/20 | It should have piqued our suspicions that Roy Black's website does not provide any means to cancel tours. It does, however, provide ample contact information -- phone numbers and email addresses -- which we deemed sufficient if a cancellation was necessary. On 6/26/20, two one-hour tours were booked for $155.40. | 7/4/20 tour cancelled on 6/27/20 | With more evidence supporting Monument Valley's apparent closure, we decided on 6/27/20 to cancel the tour that was booked on 6/26/20. My fiancé called Mr. Black and left a voicemail. She also left two emails on 6/27, explicitly declaring our intent to cancel the tour, but she did not receive replies for either. How curious. The next action was to contact the bank on the same day; a dispute was filed, and a temporary credit was issued. | 9/1/20: Surely you're joking, Mr. Black! | Per the bank, the temporary credit was reversed! While Mr. Black is a difficult gentleman to reach, the bank had no problem getting in touch with him. He explained that the $155.40 paid on 6/26/20 was nonrefundable given his 72-hour cancellation policy. I'll give you, dear reader, a moment to reflect upon this fatuous remark. For whomever would inconceivably need this to be explained, Mr. Black's claim would only be true if we cancelled on 7/1/20, 72 hours in advance of the 7/4/20 tour we booked. However, we did not do that because -- brace yourselves -- we read the cancellation policy. We cancelled a week in advance of the tour, honoring the policy and cordially informing a strangely-unavailable Mr. Black. | Verdict | So, what happens now? The photos attached to this review will be sent to the bank, another investigation will be launched, and, of course, we will be refunded. Mr. Black's dishonest report to the bank has only served to delay the correct outcome. "Awesome Horse Tours", indeed. Would you like to know what's even more awesome? Honest business, a forthright website (e.g. "Monument Valley is closed, but we'll be glad to book tours when it reopens!"), and the literacy of one's own cancellation policy. As Roy Black has failed to deliver on all of these, I unequivocally do not recommend Roy Black's Guided Tours. Monument Valley will reopen, my friends, hopefully sooner rather than later. When they do, I trust you will join me in booking a tour with an actually legitimate service. Until then, godspeed.
