Vietnamese coffee & brownie ice cream sandwich in packaging
    Lane M.

Yummy!! Always fun to go and try the new flavours. The new location is spacious (I would say at least 5-10 tables for seating) with warm lighting (and strong air conditioning!). There's also a small public square with some benches outside that will absolutely be useful for busy summer nights. My recommendation is to grab an ice cream sandwich bar from one of the freezers where you line up to order - great textures, fresh flavours, and lots of fun. Easy to split with a loved one! Prices are a bit high, but Moo Shu sources local ingredients (with the names of local farms on the flavour signs!), and pays employees a livable wage. It's a great place to stop by and support, while trying a delicious new flavour. Their new location is absolutely a step up :)

It really pains me to write a partially negative review of a really cool place like Moo Shu Ice Cream & Kitchen, but if a flavor is inedible, that's a pretty big deal. I showed up around 9:00 on a random Tuesday and the place was impressively packed. The line was snaking out the door but it moved quickly. I've always been a huge fan of French Onion Soup, so when I saw a flavor called French Onion Scoop, I obviously had to get it. It's not good. The quality of the ice cream itself is top-notch (i.e. it's super creamy) but the flavor is just kind of gross. Plus there's a lot of sautéed onion in there and I think there's a reason onion and ice cream have never been combined before. I ate some of my cup but wound up throwing most of it away. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, Moo Shu was so preoccupied with whether or not they could make a French Onion Soup inspired ice cream flavor, they didn't stop to think if they should. (I should note I also tried a couple bites of their DunkaMoo's ice cream sandwich and it was really delicious, so obviously they are capable of making an excellent product.)

Stopped in on a nice quiet Sunday to grab some treats. Got the calico ice cream for the kid (milk, dark, and white chocolate) and coffee brownie ice cream sandwich. Wow, that coffee brownie ice cream sandwich was AMAZING! The brownie was so decadent, chocolatey and chewy. The calico ice cream was enjoyed by the kid. I thought it was just OK. They have some neat and unique flavours. Not much seating (a cute bench out front), so be prepared to take and go. We ended up walking to the nature museum and sat in the park there. I love supporting local, especially shops that are friendly and welcoming. Not only that, they pay their staff a living wage, and have a scoop donation program where you can pay it forward and claim/ buy a scoop for someone, no questions asked.

I feel like this place is 5 star cuz it is ethnic and exotic for ottawa centretown ppl but I dont like ice cream having no samples or display when I go to one. I hope their new location can have space for larger snack area, and hot cream in winter since it is now a thing. I like their dessert not sweet and since I havent found one bbt place in town works for hk milk tea (or milk tea in general), I would get by eating the ice cream version if it here for now.

Pricy but has many exotic authentic flavors Make own waffle cones I will definitely visit again if I Am in Ottawa again

I am obsessed with this ice cream shop. My SIL is a local here so whenever I'm in town visiting I always come here - she introduced me to this place and I've been hooked ever since! They have such interesting selection of ice cream flavours. hK milk tea is a solid one they always have, but I always love trying the new and limited flavours they carry. This summer I got to try their peach brulee - it is the bomb. Custard-y and full of egg yolk richnesss paired with chunks of peaches. Their blackcurrant and cream cheese is also spectacular- it wasn't available as a scoop so I just got it to go. Sooo soo good. If you're ever in ottawa you NEED to try this place out - you will not be disappointed!

Moo Shu has quickly become a fav ice cream spot of mine for their unique and Asian-inspired flavours. I really appreciate their creativity in the kitchen plus their Fortune Cat signage is super cute. I've tried the following flavours of ice cream so far and they have all been yummy: Basil Haskap Berry, Hawaiian Vanilla, White Rabbit and Heirloom Carrot Cake. I've also tried their waffle cone and their bubble waffle cone, both which I enjoyed. The Basil Haskap Berry scoop was neat to try as it was my first time eating Haskap Berry in addition to eating Basil in something sweet instead of savoury. It was refreshing on a warm summer evening! The White Rabbit scoop was also particularly delicious as part of their Easter special. White Rabbit is an iconic creamy milk candy made in China that works very well in the Moo Shu ice cream form. You need to check out this local spot for their scoops! They also make dumplings, dipped bars and pies, which I haven't tried yet, but I hope to one day!

When we came during January 2022, they still only sold pints rather than scoops (due to Covid). The flavour selection was unique and we ended up choosing the 'cowherd & weaver girl', which is a caramel chocolate marbled with milk bread. It was WILD how accurate they captured a milk-bready taste in ice cream form. Their ice cream texture is a bit more icy than I liked, but still glad we tried it!

Update Review on #ThanksYouThursday Guys, these people, who work here in Moo Shu, they are just great. I have been having immune issues, so could not really go out except groceries, so they offered to deliver ice cream and sourdough bread to my place. I think in those tough time a pint of the best Ice Cream Place in Ottawa, a pint of mouthwatering Matcha Ice Cream will definitely make you happier. Thanks to the owners, I believe that one day I will meet you guys in person to say thank you for your hard work, outstanding quality and excellence of craftsmanship. P.S. This review is not a paid promo. Also, please bring back Hinamatsuri! One of the top flavors I am craving since winter times. I have actually never seen that kind of blend, but it is one of the best I have ever tried in my life. Stay Safe Everyone!

Two scoops with waffle cone $6.20 - HK milk tea and fruit loops cereal milk

This was high on my list of things to try when I got to Ottawa. And needless to say, I've been 3 times in the past month already. Depending what time you go, there may be a line up, but it's well worth the wait. Saturday night the line took about 30 minutes. Sunday afternoon about 10 minutes. Thursday evening no wait. I'd recommend trying as many flavours as possible, so that you're satisfied with what you order. I'd say Hong Kong milk tea is the best flavour they have. But other ones that stood out were Grandma's house, fruit loop cereal milk, blueberry chocolate, London fog, and jade. Some of their other flavours are too subtle. I found their gluten free cone interesting but not something I'd get again - good for the gram, oily in the stomach. They also have truffles and ice cream sandwiches in their freezer. If you want to take a pint home, you can always ask for a sample of those flavours, as they may have them in the back for you to try! Parking on the street is available within a few minutes walk. Note that they don't have washrooms here. It doesn't compare to the ice cream in Vancouver, but it will be my go-to dessert stop in Ottawa!

These ice cream sandwiches are NOT messing around! We love Moo Shu because you can order ahead online and pick up super fast. We got the compost cookie with malted milk, ear grey with brown sugar cake and Vietnamese coffee with brownie. They were all super unique and tasty!

I heard great things about this ice cream place so I was super excited to try it out when I was in Ottawa. When we got there, the store was super cosy and cute. They had an array of interesting flavours like Tang Zhong Milk Bread, Hong Kong Milk Tea and blueberry Jam and Pepper. In the end, we opted for the Tang Zhong Milk Bread and the Hong Kong Milk tea ice cream flavours for $6. I loooved the milk bread flavour. It really reminded me of the white rabbit candy, but better! The milk tea flavour was also very rich and had strong red tea flavours. The ice cream was very smooth and you can tell they used quality ingredients for their amazing ice cream. You can also buy pints of their ice cream, and their truffles - which are like mochi filled with ice cream.

HK Milk Tea and blueberry amaretto and calico chocolate ($5 for two scoops)

I loved this place!! This ice cream shop is super cute and trendy and the flavours are really interesting. We got there at around 3pm which is when they open on Mondays' and there was already a huge lineup. Once we finally got to the front, the girls working there were patient, despite the lineup and offered to let us sample a couple of flavours before deciding. We tried the Hong Kong milk tea and the calico chocolate and the blueberry amaretto. All the flavours were amazing. Being a big fan of HK milk tea, I absolutely loved this as an ice cream flavour. They got the flavour down perfectly and the texture was wonderful. It looks like they have some interesting Asian influences in their flavours like Vietnamese coffee and some Japanese cherry blossom type flavour which is nice to see! They also seem to emphasize their fruit flavours and the fact that they get their fruit from local farms which is amazing! They have a few different sizes for any type of ice cream craving. The most popular being the 2-scoop which will let you try 2 flavours for $5.00. I think this is good deal! Most ice cream places will run you about the same or even more for two scoops. Their homemade waffle cones are an extra dollar or so and they also do the egg waffles in different flavours if that suits you. I was pretty happy with 2 scoops in a cute cup. The shop is adorable, they have a cute cat as their 'mascot' I guess I'd call it. It's very instagrammable/social media friendly. Lots of opportunities for foodie pics and selfies. The service was great, the ladies were super patient and nice, despite the crazy line-ups right at opening. If I lived in Ottawa, this would be a regular ice cream spot for me! I hope they continue to create innovative flavours and keep up the great service! Next time i'm in Ottawa, i'll be sure to make a stop in!

I had seen that Happy Rolls opened up recently (Summer 2024) and initially they were only selling rolled ice cream. I wasn't in such a hurry to try it because while rolled ice cream is fun, I've had it before and the novelty has worn off for me, lol. However, I recently saw that they added shaved ice to their menu. I LOVE shaved ice! But the texture has to be like fluffy snow. Not the gross coarsely crushed ice of ice cones, yuck. So I had to check them out. I am happy to report that their shaved ice is like fluffy snow! I got the Lychee Bliss ($7.99) which is lychee flavoured shaved ice (it's dairy-free) with lychee popping boba and lychee jellies. I enjoyed it. However, I think it would be tastier if it was shaved ice milk. However, I understand that they want to have a product for vegans/dairy-free people. Also I think the dessert would be more photogenic if they added some rainbow jellies or other coloured popping boba as garnish on top. While it was tasty to my mouth, visually it was a bit too monochromatic, lol. Just a suggestion for the business. The toppings are exactly those that are usually found in bubble teas, so the jellies are made of Coco de Nata and the popping boba gelatin is made of seaweed, so totally vegan. Staff were courteous. The guy was working by himself, so the wait was long on a Saturday afternoon. It's a little hut, so everything is to-go. There are a few tables and seats in front of the hut that is shared with the hut next door that sells tacos. I like the compostable paper bowls and compostable wooden spoons. Nice addition to the neighbourhood. Street parking only. (137)

The Long Version: I was walking around the 'hood with my husband and was in the mood for some bubble tea. Westboro/Hintonburg/Wellington West now has a good selection of bubble tea shops compared to a few years ago. We have 4 shops within 2-3km of each other, well, 5 if you count this waffle/crepes place that doesn't specialize in bubble tea but sells it, I don't count it because I think their bubble tea is terrible, so I'm only counting legit bubble tea shops (I know that's nothing compared to some other neighbourhoods, but considering we had none at the start of 2022, four by the end of 2024 is pretty good). Where I was going with this is there's competition so the bubble tea shops often have daily specials or BOGO deals on UberEats. I always prefer to get the daily specials directly from the store, but if they have none or it's a flavour I don't like, I'll do the UberEats deals. They didn't have any advertised daily specials in-store, but had a BOGO deal on UberEats, so that's what I got. I got 2 regular-sized peach green teas for $6.88. I added 3J to them (tapioca, herbal jelly and pudding) for an additional $1.13 each (you have to pay for the toppings for both drinks, it's not BOGO on additional toppings). The drinks were ready in 5 minutes, which was perfect as we were literally 5 minutes away when I ordered. When I entered the store the sole employee was making bubble waffles for another customer. I patiently waited for her to finish her task. She poured the batter into the waffle iron then walked to the drinks making area. She then looked at me but didn't acknowledge me and went to make another customer's drink. Since I saw my order packaged and ready to go on the counter with my name and order number on it, I politely advised the employee that this was my order. I held up my phone to show her my order number and asked if I could just take it and go. She leaned over and looked at my phone and confirmed I could take it. Great! The drink was delicious. I asked for no sugar and lite ice and it was still a bit too much ice (about a third of the cup was ice), but the sweetness was perfect. There's sweetness from the toppings so the drink was plenty sweet for me. The tapioca was soft and chewy, the herbal jelly was smooth and not too strong tasting. The pudding was sweet and I liked it (note that it's pudding jelly so it's a bit jiggly, lol). The amount of toppings was sufficient. The green tea had a strong tea flavour, which I liked. The peach was subtle though. I wouldn't have minded more prach flavour. They use opaque paper cups, which is great for the environment, albeit less pretty for pictures, lol. But the plastic covering is transparent, so you can see a bit of your tea ;) The straws are paper, which again is good for the environment but I have always struggled with paper straws because I can't seem to get them to pierce the plastic covering properly. With other stores the plastic covering is too sturdy and the pointed tip on the paper straws gets all blunt because of my multiple attempts to stab through the plastic covering and I always fail and must get out my Swiss Army knife to do the job. At Gong Cha, the plastic covering is much thinner and my stab was too forceful and ripped the entire plastic covering from one side to the other. So I made a big mess on the sidewalk and the plastic covering was all ripped, lol. Despite this fiasco, I still enjoyed the drink very much. I'm hoping they will participate in the Daily Specials that other locations have. (197)

The Short Version: Bubble tea meets yogurt. So delicious!…read more The Long Version: Hi Yogurt is a Canadian company that sells yogurt drinks, bubble tea-style. They've been around since 2021 but their first Ottawa store just opened in September 2025. I stumbled across them while looking on Google Maps for new businesses in town. I popped by during their soft opening (September 12, 2025) and they had 3 specials going on: buy one get one half-price, buy 2 get 1 free, or get $2 off a single drink. Since I was only getting one drink, I opted for the $2 off, but the other 2 offers are a better deal. I got the Oat Cereal Yogurt ($6.99) and added Matcha Mochi for an additional $0.69. With the special my drink was only $5.68. I initially wanted to get no added sugar, but the cashier cautioned against it because she said it would be really sour, so I opted for the second lowest sugar amount which is 30% (the other options are half, regular and extra). I am glad that I did because 30% was the perfect amount of sweetness for my tastes. I agree that no sugar would have been too sour. I think if I had ordered a drink with fruit in it like mango or berries, no sugar would have been fine, but the oats are not sweetened and the mochi is not that sweet either. The yogurt was thick, rich and tart. It was so good. The oats gave it a nice chew and the mochi had a fun silky texture (note that the mochi is like liquid mochi in bubble tea drinks and not chewy mochi pieces like in Bingsoo or toppings found at those frozen yogurt places). I thoroughly enjoyed my drink and looking forward to returning to try their other drinks. Service was courteous and helpful. The decor is bright and cheery. There's a stuffed llama in the store. There's a bit of seating on high stools but it's mostly a takeout place. Street parking only. Review #180 (2025)
