Ugh, that this is one of the few fabric stores in Hollywood/this area of LA is such a disappointing necessary evil. The staff is so apathetic it is sometimes painful to interact with them. I grew up in a small town where the local fabric shop was run by friends and everyone that worked there was so helpful and always interested in whatever project was currently on your plate. To have that association shattered by the employees at Mood who treat you like cold drudgery (if they deign to acknowledge your existence in the first place). I've had to come here multiple times because the other local spots I would much rather support were out of a certain pattern or didn't carry a certain type of fabric. At no point were any of the staff helpful. Each and every time I asked someone for help they rolled their eyes and tried to pawn me off on someone else. It was as if my mere presence was impeding on their chat time and how dare I think that as an employee they would be there to assist. Only giving Mood 2 stars instead of 1 because their fabric selection is great. So many options, organized very well, and not too pricey. Umm so I guess I'm not good enough to shop at this store. First I asked one sales girl if she had a specific print on any of her fabric. She told me she was too busy to help me. After five minutes she asked what kind of print it was. When I told her she laughed. At first I thought she was laughing WITH me- but eventually I realized she was laughing AT me. She then turned around and went back to work. Next, I found some fabric that I liked. I brought it to the girl. She looked at me and my fabric, and said - 'Oh you have to special order THAT.' then turned around and went back to work. I went back, and was about to put the fabric away when I was like- 'Wtf! I love this fabric! I will special order it!' So I went back to the sales girl, and told her I wanted to special order half a yard of it. Again she looked at me, laughed, then said 'You have to order at least 1 yard,' then turned her back to me immediately. AGAIN. What I have learned from this. Is that I am not worthy to shop at this fabric store. It's one thing to have someone turn up their nose at you at a fine- jewelry store or something. But a fabric shop! I then went online, found the same fabric for a quarter of the price, and special ordered it myself. read more

Buyer had to call and email Brittany several weeks to get a resolution that ended up being a store credit of 300$. Get to the in-store register to purchase fabric and Lizzette says she can't locate credit. She wasn't much help at all, looked at me like I was speaking another language. THE WORST. I am an interior designer, and decided to try out this place for their upholstery on my own home. I'm glad the orders I placed were for me and not for a client, as BOTH times the fabric was weeks late, and no one ever called to say when it was in. I constantly had to call and check in. The second time, I called after almost three weeks (fabric should have been in in one week) only to find a mess of confused staff and to be told that my order had never been placed. "Oops, sorrrryyyyyy". Cool. I will NEVER go here again. Try F&S Fabrics on Pico. Farther away for me, but bigger selection and NOTHING is worth dealing with these incompetent people who can't do their job, and are completely unapologetic about it. read more

I came here to start taking FREE sewing classes. I walked in, and I just asked for help to get everything I needed for the beginner's sewing classes. The staff member got everything for me, and was very nice the whole time. The rest of the staff was very nice and friendly, too, except the one as the main register. She just had a stank face on the entire time. I wasn't sure if it was me or not, but then I noticed that she had the same face with every other customer. It was fine, though, because the rest of the staff was nice. Then I went to the sewing class, and it was fantastic! Customer service is horrible. I ask the cashier for help to find something, and he tells me to go look for someone on the floor. I ask someone on the floor, and he says he is busy cutting some material up and so to ask another person. I finally get the attention of a woman who tells me this store did not carry the sewing needle I am looking for. On my way out, I decide to quickly browse one area, and guess what? I find the needle I am looking for. I go back to pay for my item, and there is a man who is on the computer. I ask him if I could pay for my item, and he says he is not the cashier. He doesn't even bother to call the cashier over. I don't think the workers care too much about the store. They just pass on the responsibilities to one another. Be it a person who is only purchasing one item or a person who is purchasing many big items, it's all about customer service, and this place definitely lacks that. What a disappointment. Stopped by their West Coast location looking to buy more than 20 yards of high price lace and taffeta - along with the usual buttons, zipper, crinoline, etc - for my wedding dress. I was ready to spend in the four figures based on my designer's specifications. A shame their customer service seems to be reserved for men in skinny jeans and girls with pink hair. Being a conservative East Coast person, I was ignored by every single employee. Literally. I forged on! My dream dress demanded it! Bitchy, self important minimum wage FIT reject monkeys be damned! Oh. Wait. Their selection for lace was terrible. Perhaps they were trying to be ironic, but this crap wasn't good enough for my great grandmother's weird couch coverings. When I grow up, I want to be able to shop at Mood. I'm a beginning sewer and stopped in to have a look, and immediately felt way out of my element. (The employees were not unfriendly, I just know when I'm outgunned!) Serious you-know-what-you're-doing people are picking up fabric here, with everything from Italian silks to crazy leather to spangly evening stuff . . . . .it's fun to look through materials you aren't really finding anyplace else and think about the possibilities. The staff is hit or miss -- try to find someone to help you that isn't busy (which can be difficult at peak hours - afternoons) and won't upsell you. There is a large staff, so try and find the right person! It makes all the difference. The prices are relatively high but you can't beat the fabric selection. For more basic stuff, I go to JoAnn's. Their fabrics could be better organized. They can be difficult to search through on the high shelves, all stacked on each other. They do not take returns. This sucks, but just know that going in. Don't let the staff manhandle you into purchasing anything you don't want, love or know you want to keep. Side note - love the free sewing classes!! Raya (sp?) is a phenomenal teacher. BUT: don't buy all the materials for Beginner's class up front. Get them week to week. First, you need guidance on what fabrics to select, and second, you don't actually need them all, unless you're planning on doing a lot of sewing on your own. read more

Love Mood but I think the NY branch is elite and I do prefer online over the LA branch. I still come here, but prefer a few other stores in LA over this one... I think this store is just on the edge of satisfaction. There seems to be a ton of basic/standard fabrics with randoms thrown in. I've found quite a few fabrics I love but too many times I've come looking specifics and there weren't options available for me; highly disappointing. I particularly hate this wall they have of glitter lace fabrics that come off as 'china cheap' like the dollar options in the fabric district. The reason I come to Mood is to avoid that so I hate seeing it as a focal display... Now parking; mercy sakes - there's like 10 spaces in a back alley... I don't see how they could make it better other than moving the store but it is a point of frustration - but not world ending. For whatever reason; the guys who work here that I've had help from were much kinder than all the women I've encountered here; which I hate to say because I'm a woman!! Due to the recent earthquake in April , the store is closed for repair as of this writing. until 4/28. The website said 4/21 when I checked a week before my 4/23 trip... I had planned my trip 3 months ago, bought airline tix from SJC to LAX, rented a car service and went about my day... got to Mood. and it's closed. I should have called or checked their website that morning, but didn't think it was necessary since they had a date of 4/21 when I had previously checked. The dude manning the front door handing out the 'we're sorry, but we're closed' flyers to anyone attempting to shop that day was really REALLY nice about it. He let me take a picture of the 'danger/caution' sign they'd posted and pointed out where the ceiling had fallen. Man, I cannot express my disappointment in missing out on this store on my trip to LA. I would normally give a five star for the brothers Israel and Mizrain. They cut swatches for me AS needed then cut nicely..no zigzagging...then Ivan and Jennifer totally scolded me last time i went there. I was waiting to cut in Jennifer's line. Ivan passes me...ok...fine...wait for Jennifer to be done..Jennifer asks Ivan if he can cut mine. Ivan walks by and says that he has to do something before cutting. Ok...fine...then he comes back to cut another customer...ok...i wasnt on his line so i waited for Jennifer. Jen then yells at Ivan that i was waiting first. Ummm hello? How about you cut mine rather than yelling at this dumb crap? they work on commission. So even little should help them a lot. and I come with a lot of friends. I asked them to go to brothers. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE taking classes here. I'm taking my third class (Intermediate Sewing) and I adore my instructor Randy (I'd also like to give a shout out to Ben who usually serves as a secondary teacher as well as all of the helpful staff). The classes are comprehensive and well paced. I truly am learning so much. My plan is to register for class every single quarter/semester in 2014 and watch my sewing skills improve and my closet grow. So far I have a tote bag and clutch. I came into Mood the other day with my sister on a search for material for my bridesmaid dress for her wedding. She's been there before so she knew exactly where to go. There was a good mix of FIDM students, decorators, fashionistas and sewing grandmothers roaming around. There were also plenty of Mood employees ready to cut your fabric of choice. Everything is labeled and organized quite nicely. But, the rolls of fabric are all stacked on top of each other so you may need some assistance. TIP: The price tags are tucked into the tube so don't look like a dummy asking the sales peeps how much your silk satin is per yard. The gal who helped us was very knowledgable and friendly. I would hunt the same girl down if I were to return to Mood. I don't know much about pricing but It felt a little steep. But that's me: a gal who doesn't know how to thread a friggin needle and couldn't sew something if her life depended on it. Yup. read more

4 stars for the selection (they only have half the stuff the NYC and online stores have). 1.25 stars for the service. I've come a couple times for various trims and buttons. I've found what I'm looking for about 2/3 of the time. The other times, I've had to go online. This last visit was especially frustrating - I was looking for some buttons and was having a hard time finding exactly what I wanted. I was obviously struggling and approach the guy at the front counter for help, expect before I actually get there (I was like 2 feet away), he announces he's going to lunch. Thanks guy. So I go and find another worker, who has NO clue what's going on. He kinda tries to help me for 20 seconds, when he says he has to go look for help. He comes back and says someone can help me in "30 minutes after lunch." Shut up. Finally, a young lady comes over. Much better - when we couldn't find what I wanted, actually went online to verify what I wanted was there. Thank you. Only 1 competent worker out of 3. The extra 0.25 star for the effort (though lackluster) of the second guy. Guy at lunch gets nada. Plus the 4 stars for the good selection = 5.25. Average 2.5 ish. I'll round up to be nice. All I wanted was to buy black and white striped cotton fabric. I had checked online and both Moods were suppose to carry the fabric. I get to the store and nobody knows where anything is. After about15 mins of looking I finally get to speak with somebody that knows fabric. Alas they had every other stripe color combo, but no black and white striped cotton fabric. Then, the guy behind the counter is hollering that it's at the NYC Mood and prices are differnt online and in NYC and LA is always more. Um, ok way to go with the customer service! I shop here A LOT. It's a given that the fabric here will be amazing. I am rating this only from my overall typical experience as a customer. It is such a shame to encounter such an incredible selection but always feel like you need to be mean in order to get what you need. I really love this store and it's so frustrating to have to deal with the staff - most of them, NOT all of them, really act entitled to be jerks just because they work here. It is quite pathetic, but also can be expected (I can get how the far-stretched link to Project Runway can feed the ego). And if it does have to do with the nature of their day to day "hard work," then do something else...! Plainly, I am here because I want to buy something and having to deal with some staff person's lame attitude is a serious bummer. My version of mini Disneyland. I can (and have) roam happily for hours, touching, sighing, imagining. I also tend to spend more than I budgeted (just like in Disneyland!) The store is smaller than their branch in NYC, but still have good selections of quality fabrics. Take your pick: DVF silk jersey, CH silk faille or iridescent silk chiffon. For common silk fabrics: chiffon, charmeuse, they have good color selections. You can also order for fabrics that they have in NYC store. read more

I've just started the intermediate class with Randy Donato. I am a fairly experienced sewer, but there are huge gaps in my knowledge. In just two lessons I have learned so much from Randy. He is a fabulous teacher, with endless patience and kindness. He has had the benefit of a couture training, and his mission is to pass those techniques on to his students. Yes, the class is somewhat crowded, and yes, there doesn't seem to be much space to work, but hey guys, the classes are FREE! The class area is being made larger, apparently, which will help, and as for the high prices of fabrics so many Yelpers seem to complain about, every roll of fabric at Mood is top quality. You want to pay Joann prices, you'll end up with a Joann garment, made of poor quality fabric that looks tacky and won't wear well. If you're going to put in all that time and labor it takes to make your own piece, why not use the best fabric you can lay your hands on? My only beef about Mood is, it is woefully understaffed. There is usually a long wait to get fabric cut, and at the payment desk. I have always found the staff to be helpful, if sometimes a bit stressed out, which is probably due to weary, frustrated customers who are fed up of having to wait, taking it out on the over-stretched staff members. So I would like to appeal to the management to plough a bit of profit into employing more people. Yes, Mood Management, if you stopped being cheap, running a skeleton staff, you could sell so much more, and not drive away customers who can't bear the waiting around.It's a win-win for customers and company alike, so get out your check books and give some lucky Angelinos a great job! read more

This is probably the only fabric store I go to in LA because it's something I'm familiar with. Being a fashion design student in New York, we are always told to go to Mood. I usually go to the one in New York but I'm soooo glad that when I'm on break, the one and only other branch is in Los Angeles, my home. It makes things super convenient for me but anyways LOVE the different prints, textures, and fabrics that Mood has to offer. There is just sooo much stuff in there you can spend hours. They are a bit slow on cutting you swatch pieces if you want, but hey they're still nicer than the people in New York! (If you're pretty sly and quick, you may want to bring your own scissors to swatch! I do that in NY time to time! ) It was also cute to see that this Mood has a chihuahua as the dog that roams around the store, but in New York they have a bull dog. HAHAHA so funny... explains the opposite coasts pretty well! BUTT if you're looking for some cheap fabric, this place is not the place to be! There's only nice designer goodies here that will be quite pricey depending on what you ask for! But definitely QUALITY IS KEY in clothes!!! sooo come and check out mood! She has shown me how to make a store bought pattern really fit and flatter, and tricks and techniques to make my projects look totally professional. Not only does Christina really know her stuff, she is very patient and helpful. Regardless of your sewing level, I highly recommend taking one of Christina's classes at Mood. read more

It's Mood, every viewer of Project Runway is going to love this store. I was so excited to go to this store for the first time! I took some sewing classes here and it really helped my sewing skills. The teachers are nice, very informative, know what they are doing, and very nice. Now onto the reason why I gave 3 stars...besides the classes, the customer service at this store is very bad! If it wasn't mood they'd probably drive themselves into bankruptcy. I waited 10 minutes before finally approaching someone to ask if I can get my fabric cut. A couple of employees literally walked by me several times without any recognition. They definitely weren't busy because one of the employees that passed by several times was literally walking up and down the aisles just looking at fabric.... But they have a huge selection, love their variety, classes, and selection. But they seriously need to teach their employees some proper customer service! read more

Went here to get a woven beaded belt to add to a dress that I was getting made. They have very good prices and a great selection of items. I didn't end up getting my piece from here because it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I would recommend this place though because of their large selection. Yes, the NY store is better. It's the original and it's in the Schmatta district, whaddya expect? To the ladies who whined about the prices, especially the ones in fashion school. Just wait till you have to buy those very same fabrics wholesale for your line. Then you'll see what a deal you're getting at Mood! $300/yard French-made beaded lace is $300 because it's not made by slaves in a 3rd world country, it's made by well-paid artisans. I love Mood because they scour the coolest designer's leftovers and that's what they sell. I've seen prints designed exclusively by/for designers I used to work for at Mood a couple years after they hit the stores.
