This is the best place to have dinner in Truckee. The food is terrific and there is always great music. Here's a recap of our dinner last night: Two of us walked in and requested a table. The place was packed. The Hostess, Larissa, worked her screen for a minute then escorted us to our table --- right next to the band and with a nice view of the bar and football game. Our waitress, Christal, was attentive and extremely nice. She made great suggestions for dinner. I had the French Onion Soup and the Beef Bourguignon. Both were delicious. The band ("Quartet minus One") played a fantastic arrangement of Miles Davis's "So What" and many other songs. But here's the interesting part: during the evening I saw Larissa (Hostess) wiping down tables to speed seating. I went to the kitchen to thank the chefs and I saw the GM, JC, cleaning dishes! These people work very, very hard to make dining a memorable experience. I give Moody's my highest recommendation!!!!! read more

If you are a local or planning to visit Truckee, you'd do well to try out Moody's Bistro Bar & Beats for a quick bite or a special meal. It gets crowded at the dinner hour so reservations are recommended, but we lucked out and got a table in the speak-easy style bar. Since I was driving I had an N/A sparkling but the craft cocktails looked amazing. Everything my friend and I tried and shared was perfectly constructed and portioned. We tried the Zucchini blossoms (lightly crispy batter fried) deliciousness, the burrata salad (that had just enough burrata to taste, and none to waste). After seeing someone else get pizza on the way in we had to try it, and opted for the mushroom and asparagus pizza. Moody's has a great vibe--lively...loud! So if you're looking to have a fun night with music and the ability to laugh with friends a great setting, Moody's is your place. It was a warm night, and somehow I thought it would be a good evening for soup, so I got the tomato soup. It had delicious puff pastry bread (en croute) on top, and was pretty good. I did have to add a bit of salt. My main entree was the lamb sugo--Al dente pasta, tender lamb...delicious! The service was took some time because the place was packed. Moody's has been on the corner of Bridge St at the end of downtown Truckee ever since I can remember. Which would be since 2008 when I first went to the magical city that is Truckee. I have a special place in my heart for the area after living in Tahoe Donner full time for a few years. The businesses that thrive and have longevity in Truckee are quality places. People who reside and tourists in the area really care about food quality and the customer service/ experience they receive. It's part of the culture in Truckee- you do great things and people will support you. Moody's is no different. I had not been back there in like 5 years and it was a great to be back. The bartenders were awesome, my cocktail was perfect, and the vibe was chill. I didn't eat since it was pretty late and I was out to have some drinks so I can't speak to the food. We had such a fantastic dinner here out on the patio. From the first greeter, to our server and busters, all of the staff were kind and friendly. The food was outstanding. I got the steak-perfectly cooked with young carrots and meaty mushrooms in a delectable sauce. My hubs ordered the pork chops which were a spectacle and could not have been more moist served with a cherry sauce. My house wine was delicious and super affordable with a generous pour. Live music was just starting as we were finishing and the bar scene inside was lively. This was my second time at Moody's, the first thing with my mom and family friends and I remember being as impressed that time as this. Sometimes it feels disingenuous to give five star reviews. Because places could always work to do better. Well, the bottom line is Moodys may be able to do better, but as they are, they're amazing! I chatted with three or four people on their staff while waiting for my girlfriend to arrive. They were all fun to talk to great people. Hamachi appetizer was so unique. I never would've thought of creating the dish on my own. Ambience just compliments this old railroad town perfectly. I had the Waygu beef as my entrée. Perfectly prepared. And impeccable service mind blowing flavor profiles and a staff that really love what they're doing. Give this place a try. The prices are high and worth every dollar you spend. read more

Moody's is a really sweet experience. Although we didn't get live music while we dined, it was still really sweet. Our waitress did seem a bit urgent with us initially (drinks? drinks? drinks?) and seemed to settle once we began ordering food. We ordered all of the food. The bone marrow was a freaking treat. Please get that. I'm gluten-free so I just slurped that baby until it was dry. The beet and goat cheese salad was just so perfectly paired. Like, hats off to the chef for that one. The hamachi sashimi situation? My god. You're making sushi restaurants nervous. And the finale: the steak (I forget which one, but peep my photos). SO GOOD. So many friends tell me that Moody's is the spot for a special night out in Truckee - and I semi agree with part of that statement. I think in this case, we have case of both vibe preference and service issues. The food is really good here. Everything we ate, we were impressed with. From the octopus with this bright chimichurri sauce and beet salad starters, to the duck and perfectly cooked pasta (both quite heavy). And prices are expensive, but we both found the mains to be quite substantial. This is where the critique comes in. Moody's is expensive. And the food warrants the price (for Truckee), but everything else, at least on the evening we went, did not. Inside is casual, but very much alive and a fun vibe, and outside is spacious, but a bit sterile and a little too informal, since it lacked the charm of inside, for such expensive prices. To add, on this evening, the service was terrible. It took about 20-25 min for a server to come over to say hi and take our drink order, and the drinks took about another 15 minutes. So we sat there for about 35+ minutes just looking at each other waiting for something - I love my husband, but we get very few nights out, so we need to maximize the eating and drinking. And as mentioned, with those prices, the back patio ambiance was fine? Uncomfortable red metal seats, no flowers, I can't quite put my finger on it... actually, I can. The outside patio doesn't have a lot of ambiance at all. When charging that much, food should be on point (which it really was!), but the same with ambiance and service. I'd revisit, but I would definitely ask to be seated inside. When leaving, the bar area was hopping with a live band. Fun, but also cramped, Moody's ain't that big. Overall solid. It's definitely a tale of 2 different vibes. For a fun date night, request for inside. Looking for more quiet, subdued vibes - outside it is. PS: Cocktails were good! The scallops special was flawless, the chicken roulade so tender and flavorful, and the pumpkin kale salad was just amazing-one of the best I have ever eaten. Every single item we ordered was phenomenal! Easily one of the best French onion soups I've ever had. The fries were cooked just right. This is a great local Truckee restaurant. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and so we chose to sit outdoors with our two labrador fur babies. I ordered the beet salad and really enjoyed it. The greens were fresh and crispy and lots of beets on the plate. Hubby had the fish sandwich and it looked and tasted great (my one bite). We both ordered the lavender lemonade which is great too. The outdoor seating can be loud. Not only are you competing with the loud music they play, there are plenty of dogs barking and traffic noise to compete with as well. This place is bad. I waited over 30 minutes to not even be served yet. I've had servers and bartenders look at me but yet to serve me I think this establishment should at least have a sign saying wait to be served or seat yourself, but all I saw was signs about Pizza after waiting 30 minutes about 5 to 10 people pass me to get a seat and I wasn't interested in eating at this establishment because of the rudeness or the hospitality. We took one of those "beat the heat" Roadtrips to truckee the other day which gave us the opportunity to enjoy Moody's. I love this place and it is my choice every time we visit Truckee. We were greeted and seated immediately. The decor is very relaxing and just feels good. Service has always been spot on and delightful. The food is out of this world delicious! Tomato soup killer as always. Server was friendly and efficient. Rack of Lamb cooked to perfection, 4 small chops. Prime New York a disappointment, came in 3 small chunks, not a full steak as one usually is served in other restaurants! My educated guess is approximately 7-8 oz steak bites instead of a regular full NY at 12-14 ozs. It was served with a strange medley of parsnips and root vegetables, at 63$ a total fail! Our table also had several glasses of Patz and Hall Chardonnay, the pours were small, for 23$ a glass we expected more. Amazing customer service! Walked in Nov 1st Saturday night with no reservation. Larissa was so sweet and gave us a choice of bar or restaurant. We chose a high top at the bar with live music, such a cool vibe! Emanuel, our waiter, was fabulous!! The lamb chop, pear, farro salad, potato leek soup and crème brûlée were all five star! July lunchtime, peak tourist summer season. Packed with day trippers. Despite the crowd, commotion and loud noise the service is thoughtful, friendly and efficient. Lunch menu has about six main items and 6 appetizer / side plates. Something for everybody. Bambie had the beet salad. She liked it. Portion size for a hungry man would be inadequate to fill him up. I had the grilled fish sandwich. Big slab o' white snapper on a ciabatta square bun with a heap of cabbage & big tomato slice. It was very tasty. It was big enough to fill me up and I'm a constant bottomless pit of hunger. Lavender lemonade was enjoyable and thirst quenching. Only 4 stars stars because of the street side patio ambiance. It's unbearably noisy with the car & truck traffic at this busiest road intersection in Truckee. Add to that the blaring overhead music system. Add to that that the 24 seat patio is dog friendly and everyone had a dog (I brought my 2 Labradors). First time back here since Christmas Eve lunch when my little bean was a year old! He is now 9! My daughter and I stopped by for lunch and sat outside since it was a nice sunshiny day and we had her doggo along for the ride. We both had a grilled chicken sandwich. It was delicious with Camembert cheese that melted in the middle and thick cut bacon. Also a peach compote that was different and yum. My first time at Moodys Bistro Bar and it was such a nice choice. Met a friend there that lives in Truckee and knows all the best spots. The weather was still nice and warm do we ate outside and enjoyed people watching and then the Train came right through town passing directly in front of the restaurant. It was quite a show with lunch. Our waitress was very sweet and totally accommodating to our desire to slow the pace of our lunch, allowing us to enjoy a cocktail before even ordering lunch. I ended up ordering the wedge salad and was so happy I'd made such a great choice. I've never had a wedge that full of goodness and generosity. This place was wonderful on every level. The food is absolutely fantastic, everything is fresh, creative, and wonderfully delicious. They have a very unique menu with clever creations. Their pasta is made with only 3 ingredients - flour, water, and I forgot the third ingredient, But you can see they put so much care into the food that they serve. Hubby had the bone marrow appetizer and the oxtail pasta which he was really impressed with. I had the soup of the day which was a hearty vegetable soup with duck confit. I also had the Branzino fish served on top of the most amazing and colorful vegetable medley I have ever seen. Everything was so beautifully plated and you can tell the recipes took a lot of thought. I had a Neiman Ranch burger on a gluten-free bun. I ordered the burger medium well but it came out well done. It was a little lacking in flavor. The ambience of the restaurant was very nice and it is more of a higher scale establishment. There is a full bar and a great selection of whiskeys and tequila. One of our favorite lunch spot in Truckee goes to: Moody's! We came today since it's the 'slower' time of the season to get our favorite chicken sandwiches. We typically get the Tomatillo Chicken Sandwich, which has applewood smoked beacon and some of the best cooked chicken breasts. I opted for my favorite Artisan salad, and my husband got the side of fries (which I picked from). This is by far one of our favorites, and they source their ingredients locally! The only ding I would have is the slower service, which isn't too bad. We were pretty surprised with this since it was slower, and not a lot of people were in. Typically, during peak season, it's a line out the door, and we're pretty patient when we know that the staff is working at their max. Overall though, if you're looking for a cozy bar/grill with elevated fares (and good drinks too), definitely stop over here. read more

Came in on a Friday night at around 7pm and had to wait 45 mins for a table for 4, which wasn't too bad for the area. I ordered the steak frites and they were phenomenal, I would ask for the sauce on the side for next time though because it was a little overpowering. The sauce is usually served on the side for frites so I didn't think to clarify. The fries were okay, a little bland. 3.5 stars. Great food and service with one big exception. We ordered the beet salad for my wife who's allergic to avocado. We let the server know that my wife was allergic to avocado and asked for any avocado to be served on the side. When the salad came, the avocado cream/foam was on the side. However, there were small pieces of avocado in the salad itself that were hard to tell apart from the rest of the salad ingredients. It wasn't until my wife started feeling the allergic effects did she realize she ate avocado. After informing our server, they were very apologetic and removed the salad from the bill. The salad was actually very good for those not allergic to avocado. The rest of the food was great. We had the pate, sea bass, roasted veggies, raspberry sorbet and cream brûlée.
