Sysco/Aramark must be the supplier now, because the quality was not the Truckee Tavern we remember from years back. Their food used to be high end (and worth it) but now ingredients and kitchen are producing Applebees level dishes for high prices. If costs are the issue, serve better ingredients cooked with love and expertise, in smaller portions. Also, dear manager - on a night where seating is 50% cap or less, no one should ever have to wait at the host stand for 10 minutes to be seated. read more

We keep coming back to Truckee Tavern every time we're in town, and it keeps earning it. The food is reliable across the board, which is harder than it sounds for a full-service bar and grill. The mushroom quinoa veggie burger and the half-pound cheeseburger are our go-to orders and have never let us down. The coffee roasted carrots are genuinely worth ordering. They're not what you'd expect, and they're good enough that we've ordered them the last two times. The 10 oz. bistro filet is worth trying if you're in the mood for something more substantial. Portions are solid without being excessive. The bar is a real draw. Full bar, decent wine list, and the service at the bar is attentive without being pushy. The cocktails are well made. The old fashioned in the photo says everything you need to know. What surprised us most: the to-go orders are actually good. We've been burned by to-go from places we love before, so this was a pleasant surprise. Quality holds up. They take reservations and handle groups well. We went here for dinner while we were in Truckee. The food was okay, but most dishes were very salty. The service was okay as well, they messed up one of our orders in our group. The appetizers we had were the best dishes - corn and Mac & cheese. For an entree, I had a burger. My burger was pretty bland and overly salty. The fries had an interesting spice mix on them, which was pretty good. This is a Truckee 4, but everywhere else, a low 3. Located upstairs on the main drag, they have outdoor seating overlooking downtown which is a bonus. And the food is solid, just extremely overpriced. This review is mostly going to harp on the prices, but I do want to reiterate that Truckee is mostly these prices, and at least Truckee Tavern has great cocktails and that great outdoor deck. $21 cocktail - while delicious, outrageously expensive. I've been to some of the finer restaurants in SF, and they cocktails are cheaper. $5 small cup of sprite and $7 small shirley temple for the kids. $30+ for a small order of well prepared and tasty mushroom pasta. $25+ for veggie burger - that did come with a delightful side salad. $19 for kids burger - which was fine, although the fries came out room temp and a little stale tasting. And so on. While everything was ok, nothing was mind blowing for the price. Ambiance is fine, they are going for a rustic casual tavern, so again, you think the menu prices would match. The kids chicken tenders came out uncooked and frozen and they replaced, but they probably should have comped one of those outrageously priced kids drinks. We came in here on a whim since we just got into town and we were hungry but not starving. We decided to give this place a try and we were not disappointed. We were seated right away since we were there between end of lunch and dinner. The place itself seemed pretty chill, great ambiance to it. The staff were friendly and helpful with our order. We usually always get wings to start. The wings had a nice crispy outside, juicy inside and the sauce was decent. then we did get a burger & we split it. I'm glad we split it, it was very big and very good. The burger was cooked the way we asked and all the extras in it (cheese, bacon, onion, etc) were delicious. It always hurts me to leave a bad review.. If you check my reviews, I am always immensely reluctant to leave a low review... unfortunately, this one hurt too much to not leave a few words. We made a reservation for 11 people for 8pm, restaurant closes at 9pm. We're celebrating my cousins bachelorette and this restaurant happened to be the closest near our Airbnb which was the only positive part of the overall experience. The restaurant wasn't busy upon walking in for a Saturday evening. I want to include that we weren't your usual rowdy crowd for a group of 20-30 something year olds celebrating a bride. We ordered seamlessly and with no delays considering the time of our reservation. We were all exhausted from a boat day at the lake so we were calm and demure. The first downside was that majority of our party didn't order/drink alcohol so we asked for water all around. We were told we would receive more water but during the entire two hours we were there, we were never once offered more water. Not sure if they were understaffed this evening but the service was giving high turnover or the team was too tired to give good service?.. A handful of us had ordered steak.. the filet and ribeye. Medium to medium well to well done. One by one after ever little bite, we collectively came to a conclusion that the steaks were dry and chewy... they weren't flavorful nor were they easy to cut... my girlfriend and I religiously order steaks in every big city we visit and this was painfully disappointing.. a filet at that price should be butter soft, packed with natural smoky flavor. Mind you, we are usually so easy to please and hungry and grateful but we crossed our utensils and were absolutely done with the meal. At first I thought it was just my dish, but after seeing everyone fork their steak around their plate and question the dullness of the their steak knives I immediately understood that it was the lack of quality and care for their "off the grill" dishes. Thankfully we shared our plate so it wasn't a double loss. For a $60 plate of "filet".. it tasted like fake food! I can't exaggerate that enough. I wish we had ordered something else like a salad or pasta.. so we can at least have more perspective of the entire dining/culinary experience. Once we got the bill, we asked about the employee health surcharge and our server just said "it's a mandatory restaurant surcharge and that's all they really tell us. What an absolute perfect example of a gouget. Walked in and ordered a glass of wine and a drink $37 Wanted a steak, but I refuse to spend $60 on a 10 ounce steak. Bought a burger for both my wife and myself. With tip, $90 for two burgers. Quality of food was average, but the service was poor. Topped of the bad experience with a 3% junk fee for medical insurance for his employees. Deducted it from the tip, as this place just nickel and dimes the living shit for no better than bar food. 4 of us went there for drinks and sat at the bar. The female bartendar basically ignored us and spoke to the 2 extremely drunk young men flirting with her. When we asked if we could order the young men told us to wait. When we said we have waited for 15 minutes they started calling us old people and became very insulting. The bartendress did nothing to stop the altercation. At one point the young man wanted to take it outside old people continuing to insult us. We left. Planned to visit this restaurant bar after reviewing their yummy menus on Yelp looking for exceptional food and cocktails. There were four of us in our party. We were seated at a table and the young male server that came to help us wasn't having a great day. He was a little uninformed on the drinks and food and kind of uninspired in general. We saw two gentlemen behind the bar who were all smiles and very welcoming. So we moved to the bar. Best decision ever. Sean, our bartender and server, made the night. He and his GM(?) were good people. Friendly, knowledgeable, and genuine. He makes outstanding cocktails and knows classics yet is wildly creative with new school libations. The food selection will satisfy all types of diets. Two of us were vegan and the other two omnivores. Chicken, steak, lion's mane mushrooms, and salads were ordered. The lion's mane was a little salty, but very good otherwise. This establishment and our kind guide, Sean, gave us the space and time to catch up and enjoy the atmosphere and good company. We were expecting a nice dinner with great views and service, but our waitress really didn't give us any service. Never checked up on us and we couldn't find her when we needed missing items throughout our meal. I was not feeling well and ordered a hot tea and had to ask repeatedly for a refill on my water (hot tea is $5.50). I even tried asking another waiter for a refill on my water when I couldn't find our waitress for over 15 mins, he said he would check and never came back with water or an update. Restaurant was not busy either, barely half full. Overpriced food that really was not that good either. $30 for pasta here so I was definitely expecting the food to taste good and at least decent service. read more

After hitting the lopes we wanted a nice warm seat down meal and Truckee Tavern and Grill seemed like the perfect spot. Making a reservation was really easy and when we got there we didn't have to wait too long to get seated. Our waitress was great, coming around often and making sure we were doing alright. Our food was pretty good, nothing too exciting or out of this world but good enough to make you feel satisfied. The cheeseburger was pretty big but too many onions and it lacked in flavor. The patty itself was way under cooked than what I asked and I had to send it back to be put on the grill again. My friend had the steak and that was pretty good, not the best steak we've had but it was tasty and well cooked. Our group of approximately 18 people recently had a pre-arranged (not an all-you-can-eat) dinner at this restaurant, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. The food was good but the quality of the food did not outweigh our experience. This was a planned event with a set menu, and our total bill came to approximately $3,200, which was expected. However, the level of service we received did not come close to matching the price. From the beginning, it seemed the staff was unprepared to handle a group of our size. Larger parties require experienced servers and adequate staffing, neither of which seemed to be the case. Some of the issues we experienced included: * One guest had part of a martini accidentally spilled over their head by a server. * Two guests never had their drink orders taken. * When a pregnant member of our group ordered a soda, they were simply handed an unopened can with no glass or ice. * When we ordered bottles of wine, the servers brought the bottles to the table but never offered to pour them. We certainly could have poured the wine ourselves, but at a dinner of this caliber, some basic table service would have been appreciated. * At one point, a server brought additional wine glasses and asked our end of the table who had requested them. When we replied that no one at our end had asked for them (suggesting they check the other end of the table), the server repeatedly asked us who had requested them. We had no way of knowing, and the interaction felt unnecessarily awkward. The most frustrating part of the evening came at the end of the meal. We had a substantial amount of leftover food--food that we had paid for--and asked for boxes to take it home. We were simply told "no." When we asked why, we were told the restaurant doesn't provide boxes for groups this large and that it was stated in the contract. This policy makes very little sense. Instead of allowing customers to take home food they purchased, the restaurant chose to throw away a significant amount of perfectly good food. Regardless of whether it's written in a contract, it's disappointing and incredibly wasteful. To make matters worse, a 20% gratuity was automatically added to our bill, meaning nearly $600 was charged for service that fell well below expectations. Overall, spending over $3,000 for an event with poor service and being prohibited from taking home food we paid for left our entire group extremely dissatisfied. None of us plan to return, and I would strongly encourage anyone considering hosting a large group dinner here to explore other options. read more

As a truckee local the tavern is an absolute favorite. The bartenders are extremely versed in the range of options they carry, which is vast! The cocktails are top tier and well balanced and made with passion. The food is consistently amazing. They focus in local seasonal sourcing of their ingredients and you can taste the quality. Our recent visit we had the shrimp cocktail as our appetizer, super fresh and delicious. The shrimps were big! I had the mushroom tortelli as my main, the hand made pasta was so good and the filling and sauce was really well balanced. My fiancé had the pan roasted trout and said it was delicious! They have outdoor seating on their patio in the summer which is a treat to take in the beautiful views. I know a restaurant can't control its diners, but we had trouble hearing our server talk about the menu. Maybe she could have talked louder. The other problem was the pork papperdelle: PORK PAPPARDELLE house made spinach pappardelle pasta + ground pork + sundried tomato + garlic + shallot + ginger ember cream sauce. The pasta was clumped into knots! It was impossible to twirl on a fork. Rather, the knots needed to be cut with a knife. How does that happen to pasta? Overcooked? Not stirred? Under lubricated? I don't like to send food back because it delays my meal and because I don't know what happens...And I so wanted a pasta dish that I could twirl. read more

The food was acceptable but overpriced for what it was (Truckee). I ordered a Ketel One and Tonic, which is their most expensive vodka at an eye-watering $15 per drink. The half chicken - yuck, another miss.. at $65 too. The chicken wings - not sure what the flavor was...supposed to be bourbon bbq. The waiter did not know what the soup of the day was. I'm just going to start with: I was disappointed with our dining experience here. As fans of Cottonwood, I suppose I had higher expectations. Our waitress was lovely and I want to make sure that is known. She was attentive and sweet and didn't pressure us to move quickly. Of all the dishes we ordered, the mixed green salad was the best (to my surprise). The chicken wings tasted undercooked. We both agreed that the texture was a bit...rubbery? My partner ordered a burger with fries (no bun, because gluten-free) and it seemed a bit underwhelming. I ordered the beef filet and honestly, I'm just confused. If you check out my photos, you'll see two literal slabs of beef. The knife provided couldn't cut through it, I kid you not. Our entire table shook as we both attempted to cut bite size pieces. It was very rare on the inside (my preference) and the outside was about as well done as barbecued brisket. I would highly recommend the chef cut those things up for patrons. I don't think it should've been that laborious. I'm willing to be wrong here and as a big red meat fan, this was just off to me and I wouldn't recommend ordering it. After a long day of snowboarding this was fantastic. Nothing better than PROTEIN AND CARBSSSSS I personally had the chicken skewers which I deconstructed and cut into smaller bite size pieces. We went here for a recent date night. The tables are nicely spaced apart and we got a window seat with a view of beautiful downtown. We started with the pork belly crostini as an appetizer - it was a pretty dish but disappointing in flavor. The crustiness of the bread was almost too hard to bite - like a super intense crouton. I got the acorn squash entree and my husband got the pork chop. The flavor of my squash dish was super tasty and the crunchy kale was delish. The size of the dish however was quite small. My husbands pork chop was tasty and cooked perfectly. Hand cut fries weren't as good as he hoped. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. Overall - 3 stars. Great location and ambience (not too loud, but lively!) Food could be better. We'll try again in the summer once they have patio seating open. read more

We visited the Truckee Tavern and Grill for the first time this past Saturday night and we were thoroughly impressed! We received a warm greeting and were seated by the owner. I loved the decor and ambiance, very cozy and eclectic. We shared the Beet Tartare with house-made chips, my beau had a burger and fries and I had the Oyster Mushroom Shepard's pie. All were beautifully presented and delicious - the perfect comfort food after a full day of snowboarding. We finished our meal with the Carrot Cake which was *chef's kiss* delightfully moist and flavorful. We can't wait to return and try more of the menu! read more
