Hope Farms is a beautiful 7 acre farm that has a stand every Saturday from 9am to 12pm and they sell fresh produce picked that same morning. We came towards the end of the market so there wasn't much left but they gave us some great deals! We got 3 boxes of peppers for only $5- they were so fresh and delicious! We walked around the property and there's a lot to see. There's flowers with lots of butterflies, rows and rows of leafy greens, chickens (apparently not enough to sell eggs, but maybe in the future), and even bees in the very back! There is also a gorgeous barn that would be nice to host a gathering at- not sure if they rent it out or plan to in the future. It was such a nice surprise to find Hope Farms- much needed to address the food desert in the Southeast community! I would love to come back earlier in the day to see the whole selection of goods to choose from.

Recently, we saw them share on Facebook that they had some strawberries ready for picking and we basically hopped out of bed and headed over there. You pay $3 per person and $2 per bucket to enter. My wife waited in life while I took our son to play on the playground, which he really enjoyed. Once she was done, we headed back to the strawberries. There were several areas you could choose from, and it was pretty obvious which areas had been picked over already and which hadn't. Some sections would only have a few decent strawberries, while others were full of only the biggest and brightest. We nearly filled up two buckets and it was only $24. Sure, we had to pick them and wash them, but we had enough strawberries to last us an eternity. And they were pretty tasty too. The market where you pay for the berries after also had other various produce items and meats. I added on a jar of pickles on top of the strawberry haul. We will probably have to make this an annual tradition!

The produce I bought had been harvested the day before. The lettuce looked delicate but didn't get damaged en route to the house in a tote bag next to a loaf of sourdough and a container of sliced broccolini. It was tastier than expected, had a leafy but not weak flavor, and was easy to clean. The broccolini was hardy and had a sweet yet earthy flavor while eaten raw. Usually I find broccolini to be more grassy but was surprised at how sweet it was. The produce was still good when I ate it all on Friday.

This is grown by Congolese refugees each given a 1/2 acre plot w/in Houston, & the training necessary to farm it. The company is exceptionally good at maintaining the quality of its produce. Everything we bought over the summer, at the U St. Thomas farm stand, & received in our CSA shares in the fall & winter were unparalleled, relative to produce we've bought at farmers' markets here & in VT; from Abel & Cole grocers, in the UK; and even from Home Sweet Farm, in Brenham. Excepting a few boring mandarins, everything was gorgeous & tasty, the varieties, well-chosen, and all had been carefully picked & cleaned, ready to go directly from farm to table. But you needn't take my word re. Plant It Forward's quality--some of the most acclaimed restaurants in town use Plant It Forward's produce, too, inc. Underbelly, Uchi, Coltivare, Oxheart, Local Foods, Sparrow, Dish Society, Down House, etc. And let's face it, if it's good enough for their chefs, it's probably good enough for you & yours. If, like us, you opt to join the CSA, you'll receive at least 6-8 types of vegetables in each share, grown by a single farmer. Our share sometimes includes other local goodies, too. We've gotten honeycomb, pecan & rosemary infused honey, bread, Java Pura coffee, the mandarins, & Republic of Texas oranges. We even got a reusable Plant It Forward bag, just for being new members. This year, expected winter produce includes kale, spinach, collards, radishes, beets, carrots, turnips, Swiss chard, French sorrel, arugula, salad mixes, bok choy, cabbage, celery, cilantro, dill, fennel, & green onions. Sugar peas will be available in winter & early spring. I wasn't sure what to expect, so I brought along a shopping bag for food. When I arrived, only me and a small family were there. Farmer Joe walked around with us and picked out fresh vegetables for us! It got to a point where my bag was completely full and I had to decline any more. I got eggplant, collards, fresh herbs, swiss chard, broccoli, flowers, and a jar of raw honey. Farmer Joe was suuuuper nice. He explained to us how the farm operates and how they give food to the food bank across the street free of charge for neighborhood families. I won't reiterate information you can find on their website, but they are a great organization! When it was time to pay (cash only), the price was unbelievable for the amount of organic food I had received. (Both me, and the family, paid $5 to $10 extra as a donation to the farm- he said we didnt have to, but we insisted.) I will probably be coming here weekly to pick up greens instead of visiting the grocery store, even if it is out of the way. Not only are you able to get farm-fresh organic food, LITERALLY picked that day, for a low price, you are also helping a farm that gives a lot back to the community. I will also be back to volunteer! TL;DR: Great organic food for cheap. Bring cash when you go, and be sure to chip in some extra cash for donation.

They seem to have a pretty diverse offering of food and even allowed us to pick out our own produce. The staff was very knowledgeable on growing and taking care of plants and was extremely friendly with any questions we had. They are pretty kid friendly as well and we found that many other parents bring their kids to hang out as well. They were pretty relaxed and laid back and just let the kids run free and roam around the property as they pleased which was really nice. The crowd that was there was pretty diverse which was pretty cool. I am not sure if this is how the pricing always works but they gave us a standard size grocery bag and told us we could fill it with whatever we wanted for $5 which I thought was an unbelievable deal. They do everything local, sustainable and organic as well. Naturally I gravitated to the kale plants as its one of my favorite greens and its does not get much better than picking it fresh off the plant. My only concerning observation was that the place seemed kind of like an utopian dream. The location is pretty unique in that is it located in one of Houston's less glamorous neighborhoods which can be totally overlooked but I noticed that very little of the people from the community seemed to be attending and participating. This is concerning since having the community backing up the establishment could be really useful for expansion. But education folks on healthy eating habits is a challenge so no pun intended. Also, as much as I love the easy going type of environment that they create, a little bit more order in the way that they do business could be very useful for them and consumers. All that aside, I highly recommend this place, especially if you live by. There is a great crowd of people to interact with, experts on growing food, kid friendly and open minded environment that is very welcoming and they also do a lot of events regularly which are mostly free to attend. He immediately started singing "Old McDonald had a farm" as soon as it started the tour. I was very impressed how friendly the animals were. Appropriate food was provided by the farm which is good, so that nothing that isn't good for the animals is fed to them. The young lady that took us on our tour was fantastic. She was so kind and engaging with my grandson. She always reassured him when he seemed a little apprehensive about the larger animals. First blueberry picking day of the season here at Chmielewski's…read more Check their website for the day before coming, to make sure they're open -- opening hours and days just depend on the conditions and blueberry readiness. There's a reasonable $1 admission for each person over 2yo, and right now the blueberries are $5/lb. There are also blackberries grown here, but I'm not sure if they're ready for picking- we only did blueberries. There is a little bit of shade, but most of the blueberry bushes are unshaded. Bring sun protection and water! The parking is right by the pay/checkout area, and the blueberry bushes are right there as well. No long walk to get to the picking area.

The site is on the main page so I would suggest checking that out ahead of making your trip out here. The owner and staff were engaging and helped me with my selections. The staff was helpful and patient with all my questions which made it easier to make selections and make hurried choices. If you want to try out some fresh farm food I highly recommend Victoria's Natural Market especially the bone chicken broth (they have a beef broth), bacon, and farm eggs.

Pros: Activities: This place is packed with all types of things to do. There are several animals you can pet (Goats, Llamas, chickens, Cow, pony's and many more. There's a train that goes around the whole farm (included in your admission) and you can ride it as much as you want. They have several spots throughout the facility to reserve for birthday parties . There a HUGE mound of sand for the kids to have fun and a big playground. Plenty of places to take great photos! Location: I dread the words "It's off 1960" because this stretch of road has horrible traffic and some spots are not the best areas to be around but this spot is an excellent location. For all my golf folks, Tour 18 is right across the street ‍ Cons: Price: For a family of four (includes a 16 month old) we paid $80.00 plus food for animals for a total of $89.00. I know everything has gone up recently but I was a little blown away by this price. I would've expected a little more animals to pet or even some outdoor games to make up for this amount. Parking: Get here early or you will be parking in the "additional" parking spot which is a mowed field. Nothing against a mowed field but it isnt close so be ready to walk a little. Overall we will come back again this year since our kids had a blast!! If you're in the area give this farm a try.

They do have quite a few animals to admire and feed, pony rides, a train, playground areas for kids, a duck pond, a mountain of sand. As far as the animals go, they have llamas, sheep, goats, horses, cows, turtles, rabbits, chickens, ducks, pigs, and a donkey. You can go into a few of the pens to feed the animals. Others you can only feed from the outside. Some of the animals you can't feed. They specify all the rules at the front desk. We came strictly for the farm animals since our 14-month-old daughter has never met any. She's too young for playgrounds or sand mountains so we really only viewed the animals and took a train ride. Good thing she was free. If you're paying for a whole family to visit, you might as well spend a few hours here. Make sure you bring hats, water, sunblock. There wasn't a lot of shade (by the animal pens, at least) so it was HOT. Fairly large parking lot but it fills up. We barely found a spot. All the employees were really friendly and helpful.
