    Lots of healthy chickens
    Joanna M.

My co-workers have been talking about getting a fresh chicken for over a year. So we planned this trip over a month ago to go visit Mein and then afterwards, come here to bird for us to all have this weekend. This place is tucked on a small street in between two other farms. The storefront kinda look like an old shed and to my surprise the lot was filled with other customers. Yess! Despite the other yelp reviews, it had to mean this place is pretty good, right? When we stepped inside, there were many other customers. They had one sign and we were clueless on how it worked. The sign above was kinda useless. When I asked the lady behind the counter I wanted a small chicken, she said they only have Red chickens. I was like okay, lemme have one of those. She pointed to the back and said go get it. LOL! So I grabbed my co-workers and said here we go! I guess we get to pick our own chicken! As we walked towards the back, the stench came in the air. Little tiny feathers were flying everywhere and you can hear Harmonious Clucking! If you're sensitive to farm smells, I would recommend bringing a mask. There were other customers back here waiting to choose. I walked down the aisle from the inside and saw small signs with pricing. All the chickens look extremely healthy and I wasn't sure if I was ready to pick one. After the attendee took care of the customers in front of us, I decided to get two roosters. The attendee spoke very little English so I did my best to tell him in Spanish I wanted "DOS" and pointed to the rooster area. My co-workers each wanted one. He said something else and my co-workers just nodded yes! I asked her if she understood him and she said she gathered he was asking if we wanted our bird whole or cut up. We headed to the front area and maybe within 10 minutes, the brought up 4 chickens to the counter. They looked a lot bigger than I imagine. All the chickens were individual cleaned, defeathered and it looks like the gizzards were set-aside in the bag. Mine roosters were $14, still cheaper than a whole organic chicken from Whole Foods. Extremely grateful that they accepted my debit card. When I made it home, I gave both my birds another good wash. I was very pleased they did a really great job in cleaning the bird. The heads were still attached. I know next time, to tell them to please remove head and feet. I'll be back for Thanksgiving :)

    Guess who's coming to dinner.

Got a chicken from here, it was a Brown hen. I paid 12.50 for a young one, old Brown hen is $8. I have no experience buying live chicken but a Mexican lady and Asian dude dude were really into the Brown hens so I got one. Dude comes out with his chicken leg grabber and yanks the hen up into his hand. You go back inside and wait. You hear the chicken take her last cluck but you don't see the bloody end. 15 mins later I get a bag of medium chopped up chicken parts, still warm too. I wanted that size for a curry the med chop was on point. Why the loss of stars? Well lack of English speaking employees made it hard to get info on chickens. I had to just follow what others were doing. I also thought the chicken was tough. It's looked great in the bag and pot not tasty though. If you know chickens they got like six kinds. I will research on my own and try again.

Quick service every time I've been there to have my chicken slaughtered. I'll definitely recommend this place.

Herbert's Specialty Meats on Richmond near the Galleria instantly took me back home. The moment you walk in, the number of items from Louisiana is delightful Their boudin, seasonings, and prepared items reminded me so much of my grandmother's gumbo, boudin, and rich, slow-cooked stews--comfort food that warms your soul. You can taste the authenticity and love in everything they make. This is the kind of place that understands balance, spice, and tradition. Customer service was excellent--friendly, patient, and genuinely happy to help you find exactly what you're craving. There are tons of choices, whether you're stocking up for a cookout or just grabbing something to satisfy that Cajun craving. For anyone missing Louisiana flavors or wanting the real deal in Houston, Herbert's is a must-stop. It feels like a little piece of "The Boot"

As winners of the Steak Showdown in Texas in 2023 for the people's choice for best traditional dish and the judges choice for best creative dish, they've garnered a respectable following as a pop-up with Houston foodies on Instagram. Their model for first-come, first-served attracts the curious and past fans of their work. Expect a minimum wait of about 2 hours and pray they don't run out of anything. We made the mistake of dressing moderately warm for the cold temperatures of January, but who would've thought that we'd be seeing 6 inches of snow--and in Houston of all places? Admittngly, the smells waiting in line are absolutely intoxicating. The folks are trying to be as accommodating as possible with how cold it's getting by setting up propane warmers around their setup inside the parking space at PARK BLVD in the Heights, but one can only endure waiting in a crawling line for so long--there can be better process management to attack the demand. It was especially upsetting seeing people jump out of the line just to end up 30 minutes in front of you ordering the last 3 available ribeyes. We ended up getting the LAST tomahawk ribeye that we reserved online the week prior and it was epic..! But talk about stressful... The team also gave us some laotian sausage for standing in line for so long but there's got to be some kind of fail safe in place so that you don't have people waiting hours just to buy up a plate of sides. All the meats should be counted prior and counted as theyre being sold, and maybe limiting 2 entrees per person would help mitigate the amount of empty mouths. Anyway, the food was amazing. I'm definitely coming back on the next pop-up!

It's a small grocery shop with lots of deli food options. They got a grill outside the market to cook the meats, some extra heat under this Texas heat. I ordered the mini tacos: barbacoa, tripa, asada, and chicharron in green sauce. Most recommend the barbacoa, the meat chunks just fall apart in my mouth, and the charred edge added extra texture and flavor too. And I really like the chicharron too, every piece was soaked up with zesty and spicy juice, very juicy to eat. The menudo was not gamy at all, but I could use some more lime to make it more sour to complement the spiciness. Will be back for more!

As a person native born to Houston, but having lived and explored much of the world, one of my favorite things to do is to invite friends to go on a walking tour with me, of the area around the Houston Farmer's Market on Airline. Many years run by the Canino family, as a co-op with local farmers. And when they retired a group of Houstonians, committed to preserving it and making it as nice as possible for shopping. And it's a wonderful place to go shopping for fruits and vegetables and to eat one of the restaurants here. So I usually begin my walking tour with a trip to El Bolillo Bakery to show them the breads and then over to Granel Spices and then to El Rey meat market to show them the chorizo that I like and the freshly made chicharrones and to pointing out the most excellent Mexican restaurant just on the side El Rey. And then heading over to the farmers market proper and showing them the excellent flour tortillas that one can get at Alamo Tamales. A visit to LA Crawfish or other eateries. And also walk and talk about the different uses of the spices and maybe some tropical fruits that people might not be familiar with. It's a great half day and I love taking people around. So definitely plan to visit this area of Airline Drive and have some fun.
