Compact state beach with free parking and convenient restrooms showers and lifeguards service. Nice playground and beach volleyball sands. There are concessions selling good sandwiches and tacos and drinks.

Beautiful beach and such a great event! The day was perfect and there is no better way to spend a Saturday than being able to see Kimiko on the big BroAM stage! The even is amazing and for such a great cause! Loved watching the surf contest, live music, and all of the wonderful vendors. The concession stand is really cool too. Lots of options to choose from (from coffee to snow cones and everything in-between).

We came here to commemorate our step-grandson's birthday. It's a pretty beach & kept very clean. The parking is a bear! A band was playing on this day. The weather was perfect for a family & friends gathering. Logan loved the water and we could feel him in spirit. He is so loved and missed by many.

Beautiful, family-friendly beach with great amenities Moonlight Beach is one of my favorite spots in Encinitas. The beach is clean, wide, and perfect for families or anyone wanting a relaxing day by the ocean. There's a great playground, a large and clean restroom building, and a convenient concession stand for snacks and food. The volleyball area features a shaded area with multiple thached roof umbrellas, that almost give off an island vibe and make it easy to escape the sun. There's also another area near the restrooms with fire pits and picnic tables, which is perfect for hanging out, grilling, or enjoying a break. Free parking is a big bonus, though it's limited and fills up fast, so arriving early is best. Lifeguards are on duty, and the whole beach feels safe, welcoming, and well-maintained. A fantastic spot for families, locals, and visitors looking for a clean, convenient, and enjoyable beach day!

I can't say that I'm a fan of going to the beach, but I've been here a few times to run a half marathon that started at the parking lot at C St and 3rd St. Even from the parking lot, you get a very nice view of the Pacific Ocean. It's definitely a nice venue for the start and finish of a race, especially for those that love the beach. Running-wise, it's great as the weather is almost 10 degrees cooler with the ocean breeze.

Free parking!! Small beach with takeout from Beach Wolf. Free parking lot above it, with lots of street parking too. Loved their food menu. Order at the cashier, and eat on the beach. There's plenty of concrete picnic tables off the sand and on the sand. There's a playground too. Just no dogs allowed. And no alcoholic beverages to skateboarding allowed. Tons of benches at the parking lot cliff area, with amazing beach views from above. Overall, love that we can dine on the sand like that! Restrooms are also very clean. I'm definitely bookmarking this beach to visit again. I bet it's packed on the weekends and such. Pork plate! The pork was overly saucy but still a great deal, and not bad. Our friend liked his curry tacos too. We visited on a Wednesday 12pmish in mid Oct 65F weather, on the way toward East SD. It was empty, amazing scenery, lots of free parking and seating. Good amount of surfers in the water, and people setup on the sand.

One of the best beach experiences I've had this summer in SoCal. I went during a weekday afternoon and the place was busy, but not overcrowded. It was honestly everything I can ask for--clean sand, clear waters, big waves, towering cliffs. It was so picturesque and felt great walking along the cliffs getting further away from the crowd. Also they have smooth stones scattered throughout the sand so I was able to skip a few rocks. There's a bathroom and shower on hand so clean up is easy. Parking lot is free, but can get busy during peak hours. There's plenty of street parking otherwise.

Very nice beach experience here at Moonlight State Beach. A nice flat area of beach that doesn't have you worried that the cliffs are going to come down on you. Plenty of lifeguards here and a designated swimming area so you aren't run over by the surfers. On my recent visit, the weather was perfect, the waves made for some fun ocean experience, and the water was SO clear. A mid-week early afternoon is a perfect time to visit so that you can avoid the crowds. Parking is plentiful and free - so take advantage of this. The bathroom and shower areas are sufficient and relatively clean for a public beach area. And they have the Beach Wolf concessions which has a variety of offerings. Plenty of seating, a great playground. I can see why so many people say this is the beach to visit if you're here in Encinitas!

This beach makes top 3 in my favorite sd beaches list. On weekdays, it's not overly crowded. At least it's not when I go. Sand is perfect. I love how clean it is. Barely any trash or litter around. There's an awesome playground for little ones. There's also a cafe that serves breakfast and lunch. The views are breathtaking. Oh and the sunsets are pretty epic here too. The only downside is parking. Street parking only and not too much of it.

Great spot to enjoy your summer day! Parking was rough on the weekends but we were able to find a spot. There's multiple ways you can head down to the beach - the stairs or the main entrance. There's a playground for kids! The beach is very clean and the water is blue!

Moonlight State Beach is my favorite public beach to go to for beautiful sunrise and sunset walks. But of course, you can do other things. It has fire pits to get your celebrations on, volleyball courts to get your game on, picnic tables to get your eat on, a playground for the kiddos to get their playtime on, and importantly clean restrooms as well as an awesome concession. You can practically spend the whole day at this beach. No worries for the parking situation...parking is FREE and always available. If you're looking for a well-maintained beach with lots of activities, Moonlight is the one to consider.

A beautiful beach to take a nice walk or find a spot to sit and relax. There's a nice food stand where you can grab a bite to eat as well

No - there is no pathway along the beach.

Is biking allowed and is there a a bike lane?

No Boardwalk at all. There are some bike lanes provided on surrounding streets. On 101 all share the street and bikes have the right of way

Why are there rocks all over moonlight beach? It wasn't like this before?

Depends on the tides. Strong tides bring the rocks up, and then more tides make them disappear again. Whatever condition you find the beach in, it changes constantly. Go back in a week, or two, & o bet the rocks are gone (or at least there will be…

    Is alcohol allowed?

Alcohol is not allowed on the beach. But little red cups are!😉

    Can you see the bioluminescence?

Absolutely. Was so bright this past week!

I plan on having my sons birthday there. Do I need to reserve with the county or do I just show up early to claim a spot? I would love to be closer to the playground, can I put a tent near there?

    Can we camp at moonlight?

I'm 99% sure they don't allow overnight camping there. I'm sure the city of Encinitas website can confirm it. :)

What's all the sparkly stuff in the water at this beach?

My best guess is it's the mineral Mica. There are mica deposits in the mountains across the Mexican border, which gets washed down to the oceans here and you end up with all that glittery stuff :)

Having a beach party/bonfire for my daughter this Friday May 19...what time do u think I'd need to get there to secure a fire pit?

The night before. Use caution tape or something I seen work top with beach chairs over it all taped up

The grounds keeper (I assume that's who he was) came up to my car with a flash light and started screaming at me to "get outta here" you're the only car left! I asked him what the hours were because I had seen 10pm on this site (yelp) and I was just sitting there not bothering anyone. He said it closed at dusk, I asked if there was a sign he could show me or if it showed an actual sign, to which he yelled at me again to "get the f outta here" while flashing his light at me through my window with my 5 year old son in the back I don't think he realized was with me who I am now calming down because it was a scary interaction as a woman to be screamed at and a flashlight in my face by a random man, who did not identify himself and just yelled out at me to get out. I have never experience anything that scary at a friendly and happy park that we were frequent visitors at, but safe to say we won't be back and hopefully I can find other places to report him as thats not a safe environment with someone like that, nor have I ever been ran out of a family park parking lot by a strange unidentified man. I've also attached a photo that shows the park on maps and yelp says open til 10pm, as well as Facebook. Either way, the behavior was completely unacceptable for a random man it seems like the park allows to live and park there in a trailer and harass anyone, especially a woman since he saw I was alone and defenseless and with a young child.
