My second hip was my Right hip in April of 2024 and that was a total shock & disaster. I am extremely glad I didn't have the surgery in Leland under the 'Bundle'. I did have the surgery at the Novant ' old cape fear orthopedic hospital' hospital' . My hemoglobin levels dropped significantly from 14.7 down to 8.7. I did sign on pre-op for blood to be on stand by and my blood type. Because I am a rare B+ type I found out right away after surgery that I was Not given blood when I went to my bed on the floor when I was staying the night. Yep staying the night I passed out sitting up on an angle when the nurses got me into my new bed in front of my daughter. Which was not good at all and when the doctors came in I ask my daughter and husband asked why didn't I receive my blood that I signed for because I have an anemia issue- especially after major surgeries. ( by the way the nurses & nurse rehab at cape fear orthopedic hospital are outstanding nurses in recovery ‍ & on the floor when they care for you. They are the best of the best. I never ever ever had no issues with none of them they treat you like gold and will help you and will get you or find you any snack possible for you especially in the middle of the night) My after care when I went home the hospital called but emerge ortho never called me when I got home to see if I was ok ? To see if I needed home care. Of when I was going to be able to have MORE rehab. They only scheduled me for 3 rehab sessions. That is it. I did my rehab at home 99.9% of it at home and with a personal/private health care provider. On a personal level: my husband is a patient of Dr Summerfield and Dr Scott Hannum. The day I was released from the hospital by Dr . Summerfield, my huband asked him why I wasn't given my blood when they knew I had this issue on my first surgery- losing so much blood during surgery. I lost three liters on my first operation and close to four on this one. (Note : I also have an oncologist for my 'iron' issues for this since 2016 to present! ) Bare with me I know this long Now I am getting to the real issues on hand It has taken me over two years to recover and heal. I still feel the 'hammering' on my knee for the placement for the femur. And I am a 1/2 inch because they placed a bigger 'HIP' joint then my left one . So this has off set my scoliosis now also. So I can't walk straight I hurt all the time I feel the hammer in my knee & hip constantly My right leg has the jitters My Discoid lupus has been a constant flare since my surgery. I'm out of breath since surgery I have no energy or endurance. (Like I did before the surgery I was walking 10k steps or more a day) I was told this surgery was less than an hour where my first surgery took a tad longer and some materials were NOT used also. Such as gel foam to stop bleeding for packing and a few other things to stop excess bleeding. I have NOT been back to normalizing since nor been able to go back to work. Takes me a very long time to do normal 'house' chores or and yard cleanup etc.. Be extremely cautious & careful about your orthopedic surgeon! I found out later bc of my blood issues I would have been a prime example to have this surgery at Duke or Chapel Hill because they deal with 'specific conditions and patients like this and you can stay in the hospital longer and recovery time is longer with your doctor and insurance company. They make you the priority and your condition(s) . Where most doctors don't put patients care first it's about the green that lines the wallets. I have a few autoimmune issues plus the iron deficiency, birth defects and very bad Oa/Ra and psoriatic arthritis. Genetics of bad arthritis. I'm 58 today ! Good luck y'all's

To anyone that is considering going to Carolina Sports Medicine for medical treatment, or…read moreresearching for Orthopaedic surgeons, please read this. I feel that I have a obligation, and the public deserves to know the true integrity of these Dr's morals and beliefs. In June of 2019 I ended up falling down some steps and seriously injuring my knee. I went to the E.R. and was referred to Carolina Sports Medicine. I asked for a MRI because I have a bone disease that causes my bones to be brittle, and just by the way it was feeling, I knew I had done some serious damage to it. I was just getting over a previous surgery I had on my foot. The bone didn't heal like it was supposed to, so not only was I dealing with that, now I have the knee injury. I finally get my MRI, and the results show I have a fractured tibia and a complete tear of my ACL, MCL, and meniscus. I have to have surgery to repair it. In the meantime I am getting passed around to different Dr.s throughout the practice, because they are unable to do my case. So after 2 1/2 months I finally get a appointment with Dr. Messina. My mom has been to him, and liked him, and his P.A. Shawn Fitzgerald has daughters who have gone to elementary school with my son. So I was familiar with him. I show up for my appointment, and Shawn walks in. I was expecting to see Dr. Messina, but he went on vacation last minute, so I saw Shawn instead. I was upset, because once again I had to wait until I saw the Dr. to schedule it. When Shawn walks in he asks me how I've been, and I tell him there has been no improvement, and I'm ready to schedule the surgery. He looks at me and tells me I was going to be fine, and I shouldn't be asking him for surgery. I was so upset because I'd been dealing with so much pain and been passed on from Dr. to Dr. and now he's telling me I am ok? He continues to disregard me, and throws a full temper tantrum and stands up and sits back down and throws a pen at his computer. He condescending says to me "well let's schedule your surgery since you want it so bad". My husband asks him if he has read the results from my MRI on my chart? He never once reviewed my chart before he came in for my appointment. He half heartily apologizes, and completely disregards losing his temper with me, and making me out as a liar. He surprisingly doesn't remember my son, or my husband, which were at his house for his daughters birthday. I asked him if I were to be a athlete, I would have already had the surgery, and his response was yes.... He has become complacent, and feels like his decision shouldn't be questioned. Whenever my husband asked him why he didn't look in my chart, the nurse was real quick to tell my husband he needed to calm down and refrain from any feedback. The next day I was scheduled to see Dr. Shawn Messina. I had took notes from the previous day, and I wanted to discuss with him how unprofessional Shawn had treated me. I am waiting to be seen in the room, and Dr. Messina walks in and literally says to me, I heard you were disrespectful to my staff? Apparently I wasn't supposed to question anyone about the incident, and I was to accept the fact that Shawn made decisions based on his personal opinion, and not by looking at actual facts that have been proven to be true beyond all reasonable doubt determined by medical testing. I want people to see the real Dr. Messina that discriminates against patients ability to receive treatment because they are not athletes, or refusing to believe your patients when they tell you your P.A. is being negligent to their well being, and immediately you are willing to cut the relationship between patient and doctor, because it is more important to cover up for your colleague, than it is to protect your patients. I ended up going to Duke for my surgery, and it turned out great! She's been practicing for 28 years, and said she hasn't seen a injury like that in years. She also told me with your medical training, you were able to see just how bad the tear was, and couldn't believe you didn't do anything to help me. It says volumes about your character. You weren't confident enough as a doctor to attempt it, and I was liability risk to you. You thought I wouldn't end up healing. You couldn't fix me, and you were to proud to admit it, if you were a good doctor, you would have acknowledged that it was beyond your abilities, and you would find a mutual fellow that shared your medical abilities to help the patient get the treatment they needed. But instead you waited 2 1/2 months to tell me it was my fault because I didn't let your colleague allow him to treat me bad. You don't deserve to be able to take care of people... Maybe one day your family member will meet someone like you, and you will be able to know the feeling of someone you love not getting the proper care they deserve...

I never got the email, (no, not even in the junk folder,) so I went online and found it myself, printed and filled them out. The day I made the appointment I was also told to go to the shipyard office location and to be there 15 minutes ahead of my appointment time. Today when I arrived the 15 minutes early as instructed, they informed me that my appointment was indeed NOT at the shipyard office but rather at the Ashton office. My appointment time was 3:30 PM. So when I got to the Ashton office, it was 3:25 PM. At 4:20 A young person calls me to the back for x-rays. I tell her that I do not care to have x-rays as my problem in my hand is a tendon issue, not a bone issue and I am very well aware that unless there is calcification in a tendon it will not show on an x-ray. She then informed me that it was required that I have an x-ray. I asked her did she mean that I could not see the PA unless I had an x-ray? She said "well, let me go check." About 4:50 PM as I had picked up my purse and was getting ready to walk out, another young person came to get me to tell me I needed to have an x-ray. I said I was not having an x-ray on my hand that I would see the PA and if she thought they could do anything to help me, then I would be more than happy to have an x-ray. She then took me to the PA's office where I proceeded to wait another 10 -15 minutes. The PA walked in, introduced herself, and don't get me wrong, she was extremely nice and friendly but said no word about the time and the fact that I had been there nearly two hours past my appointment time. She spent two minutes looking at my hand only to inform me that it was not "bad" enough for them to do anything about, that there was absolutely nothing they could do at this point. What I have is Dupuytren's contracture.. It's where the tendon in your hand will tighten and draw your finger towards your palm to where you cannot move and/or straighten it. The reason I went to see the hand specialist was that everything I touch is irritated by the huge knot in the middle of my palm. I cannot play my guitar, I find it very annoying and difficult to use my left hand when driving a vehicle, pushing a lawn more, even as much as working out on my elliptical. But yet there is nothing they can do for me. her solution was to wear neoprene gloves, and she did point out that they do make them without fingers so I could play my guitar that way. Thank you so much Wilmington orthopedics. There is one thing you can be sure all and that is I will never step foot in your offices again, God willing.
