Thank God the…read moreever-vigilant local police found him, narced him, and he was taken to Novant Hosp. on 17th St. While there, he arrested (his heart stopped) twice, and thankfully responded to the defib. But he was clinically dead I believe. They treated him with whatever meds were necessary but instead of keeping him overnight for observation, they discharged him. He's homeless and was living in my car which had been impounded because of the DUI - and no one from the hospital contacted me. His ex-gf had to pick him up around 10:30 at night and he was barely able to stay conscious. I am eternally grateful they saved his life - don't get me wrong. But to discharge someone who's barely conscious, having just overdosed and suffered two cardiac episodes, drugged to the point of not even knowing where he was and at that hour of the night, with no notice to next of kin? Deplorable. On a less serious subject, I went to the same ER myself having accidently stabbed myself in the hand with a fork I had been using to tenderize a steak. Knowing I had not had a tetanus shot in 32 years and with a sudden pain and swelling in my jaw, I foolishly thought I might have contracted tetanus (a little knowledge is dangerous). The medical assistant who saw me diagnosed me with a swollen lymph gland - no tests and discharged with no prescription, though I DID get a tetanus booster. The swelling and pain got worse throughout the day and I went to one of those walk-in medical clinics. The doctor who saw me and to whom I described my less obvious symptoms, diagnosed me with Sialadenitis which is a blocked or infected salivary gland. No biggie, but it is very painful and if left untreated, can possibly lead to more permanent issues. Though there was no formal treatment like antibiotics, he recommended hot packs and eating sour candies. Worked like a charm. Now I have it on the other side of my jaw, but at least I know how to treat it. And that I don't have tetanus.

Both messages were never returned. He set up a virtual appointment, paid the co-pay earlier in the day and the office never called. I had two appointments. The first one was just a doctor's appointment at 9:00 am and he was 30 minutes late. My second was for my colonoscopy and they were running over an hour behind but they don't say anything to you nor apologize for the inconvenience. The only reason we knew is that we heard the receptionist speaking to someone on the phone. There's an aloofness about this business that is unwarranted. We finally switched to Wilmington Health Gastro and have received incredible service.

My second hip was my Right hip in April of 2024 and that was a total shock & disaster. I am extremely glad I didn't have the surgery in Leland under the 'Bundle'. I did have the surgery at the Novant ' old cape fear orthopedic hospital' hospital' . My hemoglobin levels dropped significantly from 14.7 down to 8.7. I did sign on pre-op for blood to be on stand by and my blood type. Because I am a rare B+ type I found out right away after surgery that I was Not given blood when I went to my bed on the floor when I was staying the night. Yep staying the night I passed out sitting up on an angle when the nurses got me into my new bed in front of my daughter. Which was not good at all and when the doctors came in I ask my daughter and husband asked why didn't I receive my blood that I signed for because I have an anemia issue- especially after major surgeries. ( by the way the nurses & nurse rehab at cape fear orthopedic hospital are outstanding nurses in recovery ‍ & on the floor when they care for you. They are the best of the best. I never ever ever had no issues with none of them they treat you like gold and will help you and will get you or find you any snack possible for you especially in the middle of the night) My after care when I went home the hospital called but emerge ortho never called me when I got home to see if I was ok ? To see if I needed home care. Of when I was going to be able to have MORE rehab. They only scheduled me for 3 rehab sessions. That is it. I did my rehab at home 99.9% of it at home and with a personal/private health care provider. On a personal level: my husband is a patient of Dr Summerfield and Dr Scott Hannum. The day I was released from the hospital by Dr . Summerfield, my huband asked him why I wasn't given my blood when they knew I had this issue on my first surgery- losing so much blood during surgery. I lost three liters on my first operation and close to four on this one. (Note : I also have an oncologist for my 'iron' issues for this since 2016 to present! ) Bare with me I know this long Now I am getting to the real issues on hand It has taken me over two years to recover and heal. I still feel the 'hammering' on my knee for the placement for the femur. And I am a 1/2 inch because they placed a bigger 'HIP' joint then my left one . So this has off set my scoliosis now also. So I can't walk straight I hurt all the time I feel the hammer in my knee & hip constantly My right leg has the jitters My Discoid lupus has been a constant flare since my surgery. I'm out of breath since surgery I have no energy or endurance. (Like I did before the surgery I was walking 10k steps or more a day) I was told this surgery was less than an hour where my first surgery took a tad longer and some materials were NOT used also. Such as gel foam to stop bleeding for packing and a few other things to stop excess bleeding. I have NOT been back to normalizing since nor been able to go back to work. Takes me a very long time to do normal 'house' chores or and yard cleanup etc.. Be extremely cautious & careful about your orthopedic surgeon! I found out later bc of my blood issues I would have been a prime example to have this surgery at Duke or Chapel Hill because they deal with 'specific conditions and patients like this and you can stay in the hospital longer and recovery time is longer with your doctor and insurance company. They make you the priority and your condition(s) . Where most doctors don't put patients care first it's about the green that lines the wallets. I have a few autoimmune issues plus the iron deficiency, birth defects and very bad Oa/Ra and psoriatic arthritis. Genetics of bad arthritis. I'm 58 today ! Good luck y'all's

The Dr. responded to my worries without any glimpse of compassion, adding that he has no time for debate/explanation and that probably the missinformation received by me is actually "a language barrier" on my part (because I have a accent!). After I realized in which hands I was, I told the Dr that I just want to go home since I am not confortable being in his office anymore!

I called a few days later and then again before I finally was called back. My wife and I went to the appointment. I realize it was my appointment, but Dr. Bebb never acknowledged she was in the office. They performed a sonogram before he came in, he told me it was negative, pulled up a Web page from the Cancer institute and read it to me. He then made an appointment with a Radiologist. I went to that appointment and that doctor asked me what I was doing there as I had already had Mohs surgery and there was nothing he could do, that I needed a full body scan. After working with that office they told me Dr. Bebb's office would need to schedule it for me. I called and called and called finally getting a call back when they did schedule it for me. Office staff on phone are rude. Nurse very nice and helpful, but when calling for my results of the MRI over and over again, still not knowing if the cancer is totally gone the nurse finally called back and gave me her opinion. A day later she called again telling me Dr. Bebb had reviewed the scan and said it was clear. Dr. Bebb never called me. I will not be returning to his office for further sonograms or for any other thing else. I feel Dr. Bebb was annoyed I had the Mohs surgery before I went to him and he could not perform any surgery on my lymph nodes and then the results were negative he still could not do surgery he was done with me and wanted nothing to do with me at that point. My husband was a patient at Duke Medical Center 2018 -2020 for liver disease-He was very sick ,and…read moredeveloped malnutrition ,but only scheduled to see his Dr there a Hepatologist,every six months - -Which was way too long between visits we felt as sick as he was-Later in his illness it was changed to Three months-During this time he started bleeding rectally and after further tests was found to have a recital ulcer-The bleeding continued ,and he was told by a radiologist at Duke following scan and x rays for this that he needed to see a surgeon-His Dr at Duke -Dr Carl Berg scheduled him a surgical visit, but it was scheduled weeks away-In the meantime ,he was getting worse ,and by the time he finally was close to seeing the surgeon ,it was too late -He never made it to the surgeons office-He became sicker at home-I had to call 911 as he developed very high fever during the night - He was admitted to our local hospital-& had infection in his blood-He had developed osteomyelitis (infection in his pelvis bone) and sepsis , in his blood-From the rectal ulcer found months and months before-He died a few weeks later at home under hospice care-I cannot help but think the Dr at Duke who was treating him is responsible for this in some way by not taking care of this early on! Drs at Duke Med are very capable, but have extremely too many patients and don't see them often enough to even know them-I'll never go back there -Just my opinion -We went there to have the best care ,but we never got it-

However, the process that followed was unprofessional and dismissive. Dr. Thomas at the facility reviewed my scans and, rather than discussing the case with me, simply passed my file to another surgeon with the note: 'Do you want to do it?' When I finally met with the second surgeon, I was told he would not operate. The reason given was that they didn't believe it would help my neck pain. Most concerning was the surgeon's dismissive attitude toward my myelopathy diagnosis. He actually stated, 'You are 74 years old, how bad could the myelopathy get?' This is an incredibly reckless and ageist comment to make about a condition involving spinal cord compression. To be told that my mobility and neurological health aren't worth protecting because of my age is unacceptable. I have since sought a second opinion elsewhere where my concerns are being taken seriously. I would not recommend this facility for complex spinal issues."
