My dad and I had the opportunity to stay here on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. We just needed a quick place to stay for one night in Fairbanks as we had another flight to Bettles the following morning. So, so many regrets - I wish we had at least two nights here! The place is listed on the National Register of Historic Places!!! How awesome! We stayed in the William Room ($131) which was on the first floor of this beautifully historic bed and breakfast located in the heart of Fairbanks. The manager (?), Melanie, greeted us and got us checked in for the night. We were able to make ourselves feel at home even with all of the antiques everywhere. I was truly amazed and got out my DSLR to take some more photos. We did our laundry every chance we got during our five-week trip so I was quite thankful Melanie allowed us to use the washer and dryer which were located in the basement. Although each room seemed to be booked, we actually didn't see many other guests during our short stay. Like I mentioned before, our stay was short and we had to leave to get back to the airport pretty early. Melanie was so gracious to accommodate us and still provide breakfast despite it being before the normal breakfast time - I really appreciate that! The pancakes, sausage, and fresh fruit were all incredible and I'm not just saying that - it was one of the best breakfasts of the entire trip! I'm going to let the pictures show how great this place is but I do want to note this is one of the oldest buildings in Alaska, built in the 1916s (I think) by a wealthy man to court a female to Fairbanks. It was sold a short while later to author Mary Lee Davis and has since changed owners upwards of 11 times. It's been restored and decorated to reflect the early 19th century. We came to Alaska to experience it as Alaska should be. I didn't want to walk out my door to a long hotel hallway. Instead I walked out of my cabin to a snow filled wonderland with wilderness and a pond. One where instead of needing a tour guide I could stand by the pond in front of the cabin and see the northern lights. Jim and Syd are amazing people with more hospitality than you can imagine. Jim made us a wonderful breakfast every morning from scratch not a frozen bag. The conversations were always exciting. They would both share their stories and experiences, tell us what not to miss and what the area held. When other guest joined us it was as fun to hear their stories. Way more interaction than at a typical hotel. Remember to read the description. These are dry cabins- no water, no toilet, no sink. Like I said earlier, know what your booking. However the shower house is less than a minute walk from each cabin and it is warm and clean plenty of hot water and toiletries. Not a big deal at all. I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and enjoy this! Listen to Jim and Syd and ask for their advice and use their expertise. Our last day Jim took us ice fishing on the pond which was amazing in itself, but then he invited us to the house as he cooked up the rainbow trout we had caught and made us lunch! The modern bath house are actually 2 full baths with showers, flushing toilets, and sink vanity. All very clean with plenty of hot water and a toasty temp of 78F. Even when it was -40below outside. The view is amazing. Outside of the city, so it's dark to highlight those Aurora Borealis that you can see right from inside your cabin. Or step outside for the real light show, all of your pictures will be perfectly showcased with spruce trees and snow banks . Jim even wakes you up so you don't miss the Northern Lights! Don't miss fishing with Jim and the tasty fish dinner he prepares later that night for you. And that rice, off the hook good. This experience will be a memory maker for you. Again, DON'T MISS IT! Every morning from 7-9 make your way up to Jim & Syd's breakfast table. He offers some of Alaska's best down home cooking! The chat with the two of them is wonderful. They both exemplify hospitality! Since we were a large group (10 people), Mike gave us the entire first floor of the main cabin, including two bedrooms (one for guys and one for girls), a living room, a kitchen with everything we needed, and a bathroom. We cooked together a lot there. 3 Dog Night Hostel is 30 minutes drive away from downtown Fairbanks. Of course there wouldn't be any light pollution, and makes a perfect place for seeing the aurora. At night, Mike would come to our cabin, and tell us there is aurora to see. We took many nice pictures there. Mike also gave us a lot of advice on what to do and see during our stay. All the tips he gave us turned out to be very accurate and helpful. This hostel is the place to go if you are looking for some affordable place to stay during your travel or if you are going to Fairbanks with a lot of friends.

It's basically a bed and breakfast with free continental breakfast every morning, but no restaurant on site. I highly recommend you go grocery shopping so that you can prepare meals for yourselves for your entire stay. (You could also choose to go into Fairbanks to eat, of course, but note that a one-way taxi is $100.) The owners Rex and Jes are super nice, and they live on-site, so if there are any issues, they are easily accessible and accommodating. They provide games in the living room area, for the days and nights you don't feel like going out. They also provide gear you could borrow so you can go trekking in the snow. The rooms are cozy. Shoes aren't allowed indoors, the carpet and floors were super clean, and I felt like I was at home.

The main area on the first floor of the lodge was beautiful beyond belief. It was well appointed with everything that one would expect to see in a lodge. At the entrance there was an awesome solid half-log bench. It opened into a kind of a hybrid living room that was both rustic and modern. There was a welcoming table with activities brochures available. It had solid round structural logs with beautiful plank wood paneling. It had beautiful wooden floors. There was a bear skin attached to the wall on a native style wood pole stretch frame and a world map framed on another wall. It had an exotic section of a tree on display as wooden art. There were two beautiful couches with a matching loveseat with two coffee tables. Wow. There was a large professional chefs kitchen also on the main floor that had everything imaginable for large scale cooking. The main dining room next to the kitchen was just as spectacular as the main living room. There was a mini-kitchenette area on the second floor that we used. We appreciated the coffee and food items that were available. Everything was set up nice. The bear room was great. Nice beds, clean sheets and pillows and plenty of blankets. Although there wasn't much need for the blankets as the room heater kept everything warm.  I'm sure that the insulating properties of the huge logs used in the lodge structure helped with keeping things warm. We also appreciated the reliable high-speed WiFi internet. We felt right at home in the bear room and with the lodge. We went dog sledding with renowned dog musher Bill Cotter and his family. We witnessed and photographed the incredible Aurora Borealis. We made a scenic trip on the George Parks highway and saw Mount McKinley. We visited the Chena Hot Springs. We did lots of shopping at the Santa Claus House. We went to the Museum of the North and also to the Fountainhead Auto Museum. They are both great museums. We had a fabulous dinner at The Pump House Restaurant. We checked out The Crepery in Fairbanks and The North Pole Crepery (twice) and they were both very delicious places to eat. The Chowder House (twice) was very yummy too. The sky at this location was beautiful and we saw several shooting stars and the aurora borealis. The 4-wheel drive Toyota 4Runner that we rented, made it easy to get around in all weather conditions. This was more than just a stay. it was an experience that we will always remember. It's run by Janet, Fred, and JB: all incredibly friendly people who go out of their way to make your stay special. You can tell they genuinely care about every guest having a great experience. One of the coolest parts: you can see the Aurora right from the property since it's tucked away from city lights in lightly wooded surroundings. That said: I still recommend doing at least one guided tour because the experience can be even better. What really stood out: Janet tracks maps, cameras, KP index, and weather forecasts every night, stays up until 3am, and will literally knock on your door if the Northern Lights appear. That level of service is amazing. They're also very knowledgeable: not just about the Aurora, but even the annual ice sculpture festival. The breakfasts were delicious. JB and Fred prepared both continental and cooked meals that hit the spot. The rooms were clean, cozy, and comfortable, with an extra heater if needed, though central heating was always on. The common area was spacious, with plenty of tables and lounge seating to relax. The guests were all friendly, which added to the welcoming vibe. Bottom line: this place didn't just provide a place to stay, it made the trip!

I am updating my review because once we got here, the hosts were wonderful, and the lodge is exactly what we wanted. Very comfy, nice amenities, cozy chairs for reading, etc. The hosts, Janet and Fred, are very friendly and knowledgeable about both the local area and aurora viewing. Fred handles the hot breakfast every day and has been eager to accommodate my dietary requests, even tho I offered to bring my own items. Janet handles the night shift and happily wakes guests personally if and when the aurora decides to pop up. As others mentioned, there are multiple viewing balconies so you can see the lights wherever they decide to show themselves. Who knew that the "northern" lights are sometimes in the south? Well, now I know! In short, the place is great. I wish we could stay longer! Hopefully they get the website back online and get the other communication issues resolved soon. They are working very hard to keep up with everything (Fairbanks is not the most gentle climate for a big ol' wooden building!) and I wish them all the best with the business.

Everything is quite spread out. My dad and I stayed in the nannyberry room, which had two twin beds and a private bathroom. There was obviously a lot of thought put into everything they provided- there's an outlet with USB ports, many hooks for all your gear, 2 (!) luggage racks, a fridge, sound machine, and an actual alarm clock. You can control the heat within your room, and there's a fan to help circulate. There's also an oscillating fan in the closet. They ask you to take your shoes off outside the room, they can certainly get dirty! I loved the quality of the linens and the thick towels, along with bathrobes. The hosts were fine about us arriving after midnight and left a key and great directions for us. Service could have been a bit more friendly but every question we asked was answered. The one thing missing is displaying or communicating the WiFi password to you. Lots of free parking and definitely a great price.
