Park car in front of unit.

Had a great experience here. The units are stand alones so you don't hear noise from neighbors. You can park your car in front of the unit, so it's like a mini home away from home. By no means are units new, so if you are looking for super clean new looking rooms, these are not for you. It's very conveniently located near the airport and shopping. The room has a fridge and microwave oven for those wanting to take home food from a restaurant to eat later. Definitely recommend.

    The "view" from our "patio."

The name Rivers Edge is a joke unless you happen to get one of the half-dozen cottages that actually overlook the river. Our room "overlooks" the highway. The "patio" is the size of a postage stamp and backed by a hedge, so the only views are right and left down the rows of other patios (see photos). The rooms are dinky and there is little closet space. And, as someone else described, although we were booked for two nights, the hotel claimed we were booked for only one night and wanted us to check out on the first day. Luckily the Alaska Railroad, which had booked our room, was able to straighten that out, but thank goodness we hadn't left the room yet or else we might have come back to find our stuff out on the sidewalk. Breakfast is $20/a head and totally not worth it. When we arrived at the train station, even though we told the van driver that we were two couples, the van driver filled the van with people from a completely different hotel as a favor to some other fan driver, and left our friends behind. All in all, not a great experience.

We arrived to Fairbanks about a week ago, and I didn't reserve any hotels prior to coming. I heard places get booked quickly during the Summer, but I had no idea it was going to be as crazy as it was! After calling hotel after hotel, everything was either booked for months or way beyond our price range. Then I found this place on Travelocity! I could not believe this place wasn't fully booked yet! You have an option to have a room at the main hotel, or a private cottage (garden view or river view) What!? Price was beyond reasonable, it seemed too good to be true. The employees are great and I LOVE the privacy! My husband and I had our 6yr old, 4yr old and 9mo old children with us, so not having to worry about letting others hear my baby cry, the kids running in the room, or any other noise bothering neighbors, was great! My son also developed an infection due to his eczema and had medication that needed to be refrigerated. There's no fridge in the room, but I called the front desk and they have mini fridges specifically for medications that they can lend you during your stay! I'd 100% recommend this to EVERYONE looking for a place to stay!

Comfy cottage just waiting for you

I wanted to give a current review. All of the previous reviews and pictures are still current! My family and I loved this place!!! Trina could not have been more helpful and kind. I had reserved accommodations elsewhere at what I thought was a hotel online and when we arrived it was horrible. I will review that one separately. I looked online and called this place. Trina gave me great directions and a late check in. Then she helped us find a great place to eat since we arrived after the Chena restaurant was closed for the evening. Cottages are clean and cozy! Do yourself a favor and book here! I'm sure the RV park next door is just as lovely. Location is close to highway and places to visit. We would definitely stay here again!!

Very clean, cute cottages. Loved having our own little space. Has a nice breakfast buffet and dining room. Try Chena's Alaskan Grill right next door while you're there also!

If you are grading Chena Hot Springs Resort, look at it as two completely different entities. The…read moreresort itself is firmly in the average-star range, but the legendary natural hot springs are a 5-star masterpiece. The property itself is a bit of a mixed bag. It has a rustic, old-school Alaskan wilderness charm, but the amenities and lodging options are showing their age and need some modern updates. The rooms and facilities are basic, and the dining is decent but unexceptional. That said, it is a convenient home base for activities like the Aurora Ice Museum northern lights photography in the wild. The outdoor Rock Lake hot springs is where it completely redeems itself. Soaking in the natural, mineral-rich geothermal waters while surrounded by the freezing Alaskan forest is a bucket-list experience. The boulder-lined pool is massive, and walking along the sandy bottom to find your perfect temperature spot is relaxing. Pro tip: If you don't want to commit to its older lodge rooms, the resort is an easy 60-mile drive from downtown Fairbanks along Chena Hot Springs Road, making it a perfect candidate for a day trip. Keep in mind the outdoor rock lake is restricted to adults, which keeps the soaking environment incredibly peaceful and quiet.

Review for the restaurant only!…read more Appreciated finding them open for breakfast when we were in the area recently. They were not at all busy, friendly service but a tad slow. We ordered the Little Chena and Big Chena. I definitely recommend going with the Big (or opting for the potatoes and toast with the little), as there was a big difference in for what you get for the cost if you make the error I did with the Little...one pancake and 2 eggs for $17.50, that was a dumb mistake on my part. As for the food, pretty good overall. Eggs cooked, potatoes, and bacon all cooked well...pancake a bit rubbery for me.

We came to Alaska to experience it as Alaska should be. I didn't want to walk out my door to a long hotel hallway. Instead I walked out of my cabin to a snow filled wonderland with wilderness and a pond. One where instead of needing a tour guide I could stand by the pond in front of the cabin and see the northern lights. Jim and Syd are amazing people with more hospitality than you can imagine. Jim made us a wonderful breakfast every morning from scratch not a frozen bag. The conversations were always exciting. They would both share their stories and experiences, tell us what not to miss and what the area held. When other guest joined us it was as fun to hear their stories. Way more interaction than at a typical hotel. Remember to read the description. These are dry cabins- no water, no toilet, no sink. Like I said earlier, know what your booking. However the shower house is less than a minute walk from each cabin and it is warm and clean plenty of hot water and toiletries. Not a big deal at all. I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and enjoy this! Listen to Jim and Syd and ask for their advice and use their expertise. Our last day Jim took us ice fishing on the pond which was amazing in itself, but then he invited us to the house as he cooked up the rainbow trout we had caught and made us lunch! Perfect ending to a perfect trip!

Don't miss fishing with Jim and the tasty fish dinner he prepares later that night for you. And that rice, off the hook good. This experience will be a memory maker for you. Again, DON'T MISS IT! Every morning from 7-9 make your way up to Jim & Syd's breakfast table. He offers some of Alaska's best down home cooking! The chat with the two of them is wonderful. They both exemplify hospitality! The best was making new friends with these two super fantastic and gracious people! Their energy and love of the land is contagious. The worst thing about the property is that it is supposed to be non-smoking "all suites" and we open the door to our two bedroom suite, and it was like walking into an ashtray. The smell hits you in the face so strong and horrible with stale smoke like the previous people , or previous hundred people, had been chain smoking. This was a nasty, smelly shock when we were expecting a non-smoking room . We asked to be moved to another room and they did and that one also smelled strongly of smoke but not as bad as the first one. It should be made clear and imperative to housekeeping staff that if they walk in to clean a room that smells of smoke when it should not have been smoked in it should be immediately reported to management so that they can do an ozone treatment on it before it is booked again though after years, and currently being smoked in I don't know if anything would really clear that stink. I have never before booked a non-smoking room anywhere and walked in to have it smelling like smoke. They should just give up on advertising these as non-smoking rooms. Another problem is that it's oil heated, and the boiler tapped all night, interfering with sleep . The microwave is worn and looks like it's from the 90s, as do the other kitchen appliances, as does the whole suite, as do the exterior buildings, some of which, clearly visible, are apartment buildings with long-term residence with bicycles and barbecues on the balconies! The shelf paper on the shelves is tattered and worn. The bedspreads are 90s and extremely heavy and fall off the bed . The main entrance lobby and check-in is nice, but then you are sent across the parking lot to your room number which is still signed like the original apartment buildings. There are no elevators so you are dragging your suitcases up stairs. This suite was over $300 per night and we expected much better. The place is not a resort, and our two bedroom "suite" an old two bedroom apartment that had been smoked in for decades. I asked for, and expected the price to be adjusted and they took off $20 per night for the three nights we were there, paying over $1000 total .This was not anywhere near an adequate adjustment. I wish that we had just left immediately upon smelling strong smoke in a room advertised as nonsmoking, and it is really nervy to be charging resort prices for an old apartment complex.

Our room was booked as part of a package after a cruise; and we were shocked when we saw the size…read moreof the room. (It wasn't just a room; it was an apartment!). I later learned that these buildings were meant to house workers when there was an influx of people in Fairbanks during the Alaskan pipeline construction. Well now they are being used as hotel rooms/suites. It was just my husband and me staying there for 2 nights, and we had 2 queen size beds and a flat screen tv in the bedroom, plus a living room with a pullout sofa bed, a love seat, and an even larger flat screen tv. There was also a full kitchen and a small dining room area. (Even a large walk-in closet!). Someone could easily live here for a year or more! Our sliding glass door had a view of a wooded area, and if you went outside in back it was kind of a shared balcony that all the apartments on that floor had access to. The grounds were very well maintained and there were flowers planted all around to give it a park like setting. There was a nature/conservation area right out back with several marked trails; but the mosquitoes were so bad that we only made it about 1/10 of a mile before we had to turn back around. There was a restaurant and a bar in the main building. (We checked out the bar, and the service was friendly, and there were a few other friendly customers hanging out; but the menu was a bit limited and overpriced for what it was. Plus it didn't stay open very late.) I was surprised that there was no convenience store/gift shop on the premises. They did sell some bagged chips at the front desk, and there was a soda machine and a snack machine in the lobby. There was a convention center right next door and an adjacent automobile museum, but we didn't have time to check it out. All in all it was a well-maintained facility with a friendly staff.
