I had been to New Orleans since 1987 to attend JazzFest until my near death and rebirth in 1999 with Celiac disease about 6-7 times. After I was diagnosed with Gluten Intolerance as a foodie I thought my culinary life was over and one of the many, but not only joys, of going to Nola is the food. I was reluctant to go and then a bit later 20 years ago Katrina hit this great city. When I did return my reluctance of going due to my food restrictions was born out, but the fact that the people in New Orleans fry everything, including water. Besides jambalaya and some fresh fish, I couldn't eat anything. However, due to a friend who was born in New Orleans, grew up in New Orleans and lives half of the year there with her family involved in the restaurant business, Pat introduced me for a number of chefs and one in particular, Michael Gulotta, who modified dishes or even made me specially dishes that were gluten free. Every time I went to New Orleans, I tried to go to his two Vietnamese Cajun restaurants, MoPho and Maypop. Michael Gulotta, chef-owner at Mopho and Maypop was born and raised in New Orleans. Michael began cooking in local restaurants at a young age. After graduating from the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute, he joined the newly opened Restaurant August. Gulotta then took leave to train in the Italian Riviera and Germany's Black Forest. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Michael returned home to help rebuild and assist with August's re-opening. He was named chef de cuisine in 2007 and led the award-winning kitchen for six years, while establishing relationships with local farmers and purveyors. He opened his first restaurant, MOPHO, in January of 2014 with his brother, Jeffrey Gulotta, and high-school friend, Jeffrey Bybee. Located in New Orleans' Mid City, MOPHO was a true neighborhood restaurant and a destination for Southeast Asian inspired cuisine utilizing the Louisiana pantry. In its first year MOPHO was nominated for America's Best New Restaurant by Bon Appétit magazine and named Restaurant of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. In 2016 Michael was named one of Top 30 Chefs to Watch in the nation by Plate Magazine, A New Orleans Rising Star by Starchefs, a Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine, and Chef of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. In 2017, his team opened its second full-service restaurant, Maypop, in the Central Business District of New Orleans. Maypop was named a Top 5 Best New Restaurant by The Times Picayune, A Best New Restaurant by New Orleans Magazine, a New Orleans Top 20 Restaurants by Condé Nast Traveler, and a New Orleans' Top Ten Restaurants for 2019, by Brett Anderson. Michael has also been a semifinalist for The James Beard Awards Best Chef South for the past four years. Most recently, his team opened a second MOPHO location in the new Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. On my trip to New Orleans this past May, I was saddened to learn that Michael was closing MoPho and Maypop, casualties of the so difficult business of owning a restaurant I know all too well. After JazzFest one evening on MoPho's second to last day, Pat and I went to pay our respects and I got to thank Michael for his kindness showing me there was culinary life after my diagnosis not only at his restaurant but when he catered the main stage at JazzFest, but he also introduced me to more fusion possibilities which I have incorporated in some of the food I make. On the last day of Maypop, my brother Jeff and I dined at Maypop, Michael's more upscale joint which served delicious food and not to be undone, after both closed on that Sunday in May, I saw the MoPho at the airport right in front of my terminal to fly home and I got the greatest wings on the planet to fly home with: CRISPY CHICKEN WINGS WITH NUOC MAM CARAMEL. I have no idea what exactly that is except Cajun chicken spices with a Vietnamese caramel sauce that is unparalleled in it's flavor, bite and marriage of cultures that was so good Pat would always ask for more on the side. I'm sure Michael will get back in the game at some point but I write this with gratitude to Pat for introducing me to this great Chef and to Chef Gulotta for taking the time to show me what I could eat and what modifications he could make to his food for me. read more

Free parking in the plaza! The food is great! I went with a group of 6 and tried the appetizers and only a few of us got the entrees. The ambience is almost giving tiki bar. The place had a good volume of low music leaving plenty of talking volume. They had a patio that was holding at least a 12+ party. While it was a Wednesday the service was a little slow at times. Are you supposed to say "mow-fow" like mofo, or "muh-fuh" like the soup? Or "mow-fuh" like give me mo' soup? I don't know. This place is famous as a Michael Gulotta joint, but honestly the idea of a white guy doing an Asian fusion restaurant makes me wary of the food. Thankfully, my prejudices were wrong and this place is really good. The interior is hip, but still unpretentiously warm and Southeast Asian-feeling. Our server was attentive and welcoming, too. Crispy Fried Chicken Wings with Nuoc Mam Caramel: It's worth the buzz. Rice flour gives these meaty wings their unsinkable crunch despite the fact that they're set on a pool of gooey sauce. The seasoning and fish sauce base work really well and set them apart in a city that mofo'ing *knows* chicken wings. Traditional Chicken Pho: Had to try something basic with no added bells or whistles. While not the best I've had, it's good with a nice mix of textures. The soup part is tasty, but I was hoping for a little more punch/layers in the flavors. Black Eyed Pea Curry Bowl: This place does not half-ass the veggie and vegan dishes which is awesome. Great dish with strong flavors in the peas. It's also just a beautiful mix of ingredients which should satisfy diners of any dietary persuasion. Dragon Lady Cocktail: The jalapeno and lemongrass syrup piqued my interest. Overall a nice drink with great presentation, though it's a bit sweet and light-ish on alcohol. This restaurant is really close to my house so I can't believe my first time going was yesterday. I started off with the Thai tea boba with rum and the queso appetizer. Both were really good but I'd prefer more roti and no cracklins or shrimp chips. For the entree I got the yellow curry with chicken and it was virtually flavorless. I kept trying to add salt and pepper but it just didn't do the trick. I could tell it had potential though but it was just something missing. Can't say enough good things about MoPho - an excellent example of fusing Southern and Asian food styles to create something unique and delicious. The table tried several dishes, and all were excellent: the Hangover Pho ($17), Shrimp and Grits ($21), Crispy Chicken Vindaloo Sandwich ($17), and the Glazed Pork Belly Bowl ($16). You will be most happy with any of these. We also tried two buns, the Creole Tomato Bun ($10) and the Brisket Buns ($11). Delicious, and the Brisket was amazing. So close to the Museum of Art you can walk through the park to get there, this sweet little gem of a restaurant is worth the effort. Their home brewed ginger beer is delicious, with strong vibes of fermented ginger, and the beef bimbibap was excellent, lots of veggies and pungent beef. I enjoy going to MoPho every once in a while. They have really good daily specials. I always stop by during lunch, everyone working there is pretty friendly, and the food comes out in a timely manner. The food options are good. This time, I tried the Korean BBQ Beef rice bowl, it tasted pretty good. Went on a lunch date, we were seated quickly, and placed our order not long after. I was feeling a bit under the weather and it was cold out so I wanted soup. I the empty plate was the crispy chicken bites which was good, however they seemed a bit too done and slightly burnt, unless the grease they were fried in was old. The pho was good though it has its own twist and not a traditional pho. If you want traditional pho, this isn't the place. Hello, Mopho! You've been on my radar for the better part of a decade since you opened, yet it's taken me this long to try you. And you're good. You're so so good. They have legit vegan options and more than merely 1 app, 1 entree. This was a lunch meeting for me, so I stuck to one entree and let's just say that I loved my food so much, I might have not have taken a breather from my bowl. And regrets, I have not a single one. I had the black-eyed pea eggplant and tofu curry and it's a flavor bomb of luscious curry, sweet and tender eggplant and incredibly delicious chunks of seasoned tofu that have the perfect texture. I also appreciated the small piles of lettuce and pickled, shredded carrots to balance out the flavor. I couldn't resist trying their boba (by the way you can add booze to these) and although the frozen watermelon one is good, it's a little too sweet for me and the boba was more frozen and less tasty than I'd like. I'd give it another shot (WITH a shot next time, as I'm more of an after 5pm drinker). I wish they'd do milky boba teas with condensed coconut milk so that I can try them! An experience for the culinary adventurous. Mopho is a fushion restaurant that combines Eastern with Western cuisine. Each dish's menu description gives only hints of the miraculous taste profiles of two widely different cuisines mashed together in a creative and delicious way. The fried green bean appetizer is a hit of sweet and spicy, wrapped up in textural treats. The green beans are coated in spicy red pepper powder and then drissled with a chili oil aoili. Sprinkles of puffed rice, sesame seeds, and green onion add much needed crunch. My only complaint is that the chili aoili is applied heavily, so much so that the actual flavor of the beans are hidden amongst the spicy sauce. The spicy chicken vindaloo sandwich takes a Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich and adds Indian flare. Chicken thighs are marinated and breaded before being fried to crispy perfection before being coated in a honey vindaloo sauce. A fresh and soft sesame seed bun is toasted before being topped with the chicken and pickled vegetables. The meat is beyond crunchy due to the breading, and the sweet spicy sauce is balanced by the sourness from the pickled vegetables. This sandwich is huge and messy. It's best shared with a friend and a lot of napkins! The beef pho is deceptively delicious. At first glance, it looks like a standard pho, but with each bite, you'll be treated to hints of southwestern bbq. The broth tastes of smoked meats. The meatballs are more like sweet and tangy meatloafs, absorbing the broth like a spong. The slices of beef are a bit thicker than typical pho and have a kiss of smoke flavor. Instead of Vietnamese veggies, the dish has collared greens, further solidifying the Texan inspired fushion. The only lackluster bit were the noodles. While soft, chewy, and delicious, they were underwhelming compared to the rest of the dish. I really really like this place. Tucked away where MidCity meets Navarre on City Park Ave, it's easy to spot with that iconic navy and orange color scheme. The menu is small but what they do have packs a punch. This is absolutely not authentic or traditional Vietnamese food. It's a bougie Americanized version but honestly I loved it I absolutely loved my chicken Khao soi. It was so packed full of delicious flavor. My husband god some bao mi (steamed buns). He liked the taste but was disappointed with the portions for the price. Because this is a little bougie Americanized spot, the price point is going to be a little higher. I totally think it's worth it! But if you are wanting pho made by someone's grandmother and the cheap price to match, this is not your spot. We got the spicy sesame cucumbers to start(one of our favorite appetitizers) and chased it with a Korean BBQ beef bowl some great layers of flavor in this and the Crispy Chicken Vindaloo sandwich(not Tennessee Hot, but fairly warm) this was super tasty, but a little bit messy to eat so be prepared. Was in the area and decided to try this restaurant with a friend. The restaurant was clean on the outside, which was good. The inside is a nice quaint spot, a decent size, and the atmosphere was inviting. There was no wait. We were seated quickly. It also has outdoor seating. The server, her name is Carol, was friendly and knowledgeable about the food. She allowed us to try the Jasmine tea after we asked about a flavor tea or lemonade. She was able to explain the menu and was very patient with us because we had several questions. The food - we ordered the cabbage kimchi (I think that's what it's called), my first time having it, and it was pretty good. I also ordered the oyster bowl with the noodles. It was really tasty, had a sweetness to it, and the oysters were fried just right. I could definitely eat that again. My friend had the chicken bowl, she was pleased. The jasmine tea wasn't bad, but the jasmine was an after taste and not an initial taste so it wasn't for me. But hey, someone else might enjoy it! Authentic pho, this is not! I think that's kind of the point, though? But the broth is very sweet and herbal without much hint of the star anise, beef bones, etc that you crave in authentic pho. Then, they only give you 2 leaves of basil. THEN, the "traditional pho" on the menu comes with.... bulgogi style *already cooked* beef (this to me is unforgivable) and some weird char siu style sliced pork type meat. VERY ODD. I'm not 100% against fusion or twists on authentic pho but like others have said, I'm from LA and they take pho seriously over there. My verdict is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it! This Mopho don't disappoint. I need to try the whole menu. They are serving flavors galore. Nice and spacious atmosphere. We sat outside on a very nice day. Our waitress was friendly, very attentive and good with suggestions. I am not drinking alcohol at the moment so imagine my surprise they had non alcohol cocktails. The Phony Negroni is a win win. Try it. The fried green beans are yum! My friend had the pork belly rice bowl and I had the fried chicken rice bowl and added Kimchi. So good. I want to go back now as I type this review. After living in NOLA for almost three years, we finally walked over to Mopho for lunch. Unfortunately Mopho's flavors did not match our preferences. The service was nice and easy, and the staff were friendly. The Crispy Chicken Wings with Nuoc Mam Caramel sauce was tasty, but nothing special for us. My husband and I weren't fighting over them like other dishes we've had else where. The Pho was interesting. I can taste a base of original Pho flavors but there was a different flavor I couldn't quite pinpoint. It just didn't feel "right." The Burmese Pork Bowl with cold vermicelli noodles was interesting too. The noodles were more crunchy than typical vermicelli noodles in Vietnamese restaurants. It wasn't bad, but the texture just didn't make it as "slurpilicious" as traditional Vietnamese vermicelli noodle bowls. The Burmese Pork flavors were very authentic but i just think the slaw and the noodles didn't really compliment the pork. Not sure if we'll make an effort to come again since it seems like our flavor preferences do not match the flavor profile of Mopho. I think I found MoPho through an Eater or Infatuation list for NOLA. It's a bit out of the way if you're a tourist staying in the French Quarter, but it felt nice to be at a restaurant that's pretty local. It's located in a strip mall-type place, so definitely a more local spot. We were seated next to a young college couple on a date, which was super cute. To start, we split the MoPho Queso - Lemongrass Sausage, American, and Mozzarella cheese, served with Roti Bread, Shrimp Chips, and Cracklin'. This was fantastic. I loved the shrimp chips and X loved the cracklins. I had the Hangover Pho - Beef Broth, Burmese Pork, Mushrooms, American Cheese, Pork Meatballs, Bacon, and Slow Poached Egg. This was great. The food was mid. I ate "the beef" and it was the most water down broth I ever ate. The meatballs in the pho was overpowering my tastebuds and tasted weird, like a soy imitation. The bobas though were so yummy, did taste natural and everything, boba saved the day. And the beef barely had beef to begin with, it was more meatball thing than the beef strips, damning it more. What was good was the hangover #2, my mother in law had it and I was jealous. Hangover 2 was their best and would recommend that. Sigh, a very disappointing experience. Im a vietnamese person who grew up here in the south and I've eaten at a lot of pho places. By businesses big and small, from pho tau bay to pho bang to mint modern to nudo to my grandmas. Always down to try and give any small business a chance, but was actually very sad about the flavors. So to the food, it's not terrible but I wouldn't necessarily call it pho. I've had bland pho, some with some different twists like oxtail, shrimp, etc. But this really lacked the essence of what made pho, you know...pho. I had mushrooms, some type of beef luncheon, and brisket that almost made it feel like a ramen bowl. So what I had was a bowl of soup that was confused as to if it was pho or ramen or maruchan. I don't mean to bash it as I know the owners aren't asian which is fine. But it just felt like going to a carribean joint for some jerk chicken and finding out the seasoning was made with tonys creole seasoning. First time in my life, I actually didn't finish my pho bowl which says a lot. Cause i always finish my bowl, even the most bland ones, just couldn't with this one.... Was very very sad. I really want to give it another chance, but only if I'm not craving pho. More so if I wanted something better than packaged maruchan noodles but all the other pho spots were closed.. I've had a lot of good food on this NOLA visit, but never would have guessed that my favorite meal so far would be at a weirdo Vietnamese Joint. The Wednesday Special, "Smokey Pork Pho," is described as "Smokey pork broth with Burmese curry-braised pork, pork belly, meatballs, bacon, mushrooms, braised greens, and slow-poached egg, topped with spicy pork fat." Hot DAMN! My guy got tired of me saying every 5 minutes, "OMFG, this is SO good!" My friend and I decided to have dinner at Mopho and I was so excited because I've been dying to try their lemongrass wings that I have heard so much about. First, all of the staff members were so warm and welcoming. Anything that I had questions about they were able to answer and help me make decisions on what to order off both the cocktail and food menu. I started with I believe the My Tie or Pimm's cocktail. I cannot recall;however, it was so delicious and refreshing. For the appetizer, we ordered the Crispy Lemongrass wings. And they were 10/10. The sauce had an amazing flavor. The wings were a nice size and they were juicy and fried just right. There were really just enough wings that it could have served as an entree. For my entree, I ordered the Glazed Pork Belly Bowl. Another menu item that I would rate 10/10. I loved the flavor of the pork belly and the pork skins on top added a great crunch to the bowl. Overall great experience. Mopho is one of the best restaurants in New Orleans! I've been A handful of times and each time is Better than before. The food is SO GOOD and packed with flavor. I've had everything from their daily specials, ramen, to their bowls! The crispy wings are otherworldly. The queso??? Are you kidding me??? I could have licked the bowl. The service is always good. The servers all seem to be really chill as well as versed on what they like as well as what's popular with their customers. The vibe is cute and now that it's warmer the outside seating is open so you get best of both worlds. I love this places and I always recommend it or take friends from out of time!
