And being next to one of the best international markets in Greater New Orleans? Yeah... it's a whole experience. I started coming here about 7 years ago, and my go-to back then was the Vietnamese coffee with boba jelly. Fell in love instantly. Then one day I wanted to switch it up, and the owner--who I've seen consistently since day one--put me on to honeydew with watermelon and condensed milk. BABY... that became my order for a whole year. So this visit, I came in on the same type of timing, wanting something new. And just like that, she recommended strawberry with coconut. Let me tell you... she knows BALL. The flavor is creamy, smooth, and gives strawberry Blue Bell ice cream vibes in the best way. Their boba is always consistent. Texture on point, flavors on point. Never a miss. They also have bánh mì--basically a Vietnamese po-boy--and I'm almost certain the bread is from Dong Phuong. If you know, you know. I usually get the roasted sweet pork with extra pâté because that pâté? Chef's kiss every single time. Random memory but I remember catching them at NOLA Night Market years ago and that lemongrass chicken had my husband hooked. I'm still waiting on that comeback! I read online about Mr. bubbles as one of the better botany places in town, especially over on the West Bank or Gretna side so I went in here and I took a chance and I got the combo and Vietnamese coffee with the black Boba the sandwich was great. I've never had one and has a lot of flavors and good textures. It has a little bit of everything. It's got the vegetables, pork if many variety. Including meatballs. Lots cilantro and jalapeño it's a really good sandwich. Overall, I recommend if you haven't tried one might as well try Mr. bubbles. We have about six sandwich options. A lot of drinks even a veggie option with avocado so I don't think you can go wrong. Take a little trip to the taste of Vietnam. Try Mr. bubbles you'll be happy you did if not it was a good adventure. The service was fast and friendly, and the ambience was your typical sandwich shop with a little bit of Asian flair. I used to brag about this place ro everyone. Today, I got the usual Banh Mi Dac Biet. It is the worst banh mi ever. None of us could finish it. I couldn't eat after one bite. I also got the combo bahnmi. I was surprised the but bun was light and crispy and not hard. The veggies were fresh and had good balance with the baguette. The meat wasn't strong and had some orange sauce. A different than what I'm used to. Combination usually has pate paste but I didn't taste it. They need to be more consistent with their sandwiches. It's hit or miss. Depends on who's working, you might get a real sandwich that's filled with meat and veggies. Other times you'll end up with two slices of meat and 1/4 of a meatball on your combination sandwich you paid $7 for. What a joke. Do better, Mr. Bubbles. I liked the old owners better. The place is located inside of the Hong Kong market. The taro bubble tea was okay, not overly sweet and well balanced but I probably will no longer have this again. Mine had the texture of a smoothie and other bubble teas I've had in DC were more a clear liquid. These teas come with tapioca balls on the bottom and from what I've read, are not very healthy. Soooo, I'll just stick to making my own smoothies at home or grab one from Smoothie King. I'm sure you can get these drinks without the balls but I'd rather err on the side of caution. They do have lots of other healthy beverages and sandwiches to indulge, so check'em out if bubble tea is ya thang! read more

My go to place for Banh mi here in the westbank. I usually get the #2 grilled pork Banh mi. They used Dong Phuong bread which has a good toasted crunch on outside but fluffy on inside. During Mardi Gras season they also carry DP king cakes. It's a little pricier than driving out to the east but I rather pay the extra $$ to get it closer to home. Staff are always friendly and facility is clean. There is still no dine in. You just order at the counter and wait for your to go Banh mi. I got 2 of the all veggie banh mi sandwiches and they are so so so good! The French bread is crispy and so delicious and all the veggies (carrots cucumber jalapeño cilantro onion) were fresh as can be! The all veggie banh mi is only $4.25 so I went ahead and got two!!! Pair that with your protein of choice, some perfectly lightly pickled veggies, some jalapeños for some subtle heat, cilantro for an extra kick of freshness, and butter mayo for added richness and you have yourself one heck of a sandwich. On top of that it's such a good deal - only around $5 for a delicious meal. Their bubble teas are also pretty good. Ah. It's one of our pleasures while we go shop at Hong Kong Market. I'll be very frank, it's not the best Boba (I call it boba because I'm from California) in the City, but it's been the most reliable boba I can find around the West Bank. I've tried a couple of their teas, and some of them are actually quite bland. My favorite seems to be the strawberry milk tea, wherein they actually use real strawberries. The tea has a great taste (I think it was Jasmine, but I forget). Their bobas (tapioca pearls) are lackluster in that they do not have or retain their nice soft texture. In Los Angeles there are tea places every 2 miles, and if you're within a certain area of Los Angeles every block. If I can't make it to Meteirie, then this place (due to location) is definitely the go-to place. The staff are always wonderful. Their Banh Mi are also pretty good! Pricier than next door, but faster and dare I say it, friendlier. read more

I love coming here for Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches because it's always quick, cheap and the sandwiches are very tasty. (They do make sandwiches inside HK market as well but I don't feel that the quality at the sandwich cart is as good). The bread tastes fresh and the sandwiches are made really well with all of the traditional toppings. My favorites are the pork meatball banh mi and the grilled pork banh mi. Kind of a weird way to describe it, but I would almost label this place "Vietnamese fast food". It's a small place located right inside the Hong Kong market. There's a counter where you can order and a couple of tables and chairs. I stopped in because I heard through the grape vine that they have an avocado smoothie here and avocado smoothies are my new obsession. Went right in and ordered. I like that you have the option of getting your drink without the tapioca balls (my choice). The smoothie was a really good size for $4.75 and full of flavor. You could tell that it was really fresh. Pro tip: I noticed that as the drink warmed to room temperature the avocado taste was a lot more rich, so don't be so quick to gulp it all down in the first few minutes. They also serve small banh mi sandwiches, which are a steal at $3 each. That's why I labeled it "fast food", because you can get a quick little bite for cheap. It's conveniently located on the right hand side before the grocery store entrance. Service is always welcoming and friendly. The cafe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee) was a perfect beginning to the start of Lunar New Year weekend. I enjoyed the cafe sua da, which had a good ratio of coffee: condensed milk: ice (4/5). Try some for yourself and you might get hooked like a kid in a candy store! If you are needing a bite to eat, they also serve a variety of Vietnamese banh mi (sandwiches) at reasonable prices. We tried the combination (thap cam) and pork meatball (xiu mai) sandwiches. The first thing that threw me off were the sliced purple onions. I was expecting the typical pickled carrots-daikon, cilantro and sliced fresh jalapeños, but the topping of purple onions just really threw me off. In all of my years of eating banh mi, I've never had purple onions in them! Personally, I don't mind eating onions but others may not. As common courtesy, they should let patrons know about this on the menu to avoid any mishaps in the future. The combination sandwich was average in taste (3/5), filled with Vietnamese cold cuts. Their bread tasted like it came from Dong Phuong- I can always spot their buttery French bread from a mile away. The pork meatball sandwich was slightly above average (3.5/5). The meatball has a sweet taste, almost reminiscent of an Italian meatball. The banh mi were ok, but nothing to rave about to all your friends. Convenience and cost are the reasons why I would visit Mr. Bubbles when shopping in the area. Their quick and friendly service helps to keep patrons coming back. Then on your way out, get a banh mi! The place is family owned and ran. Mom is out making drinks, dad is fixing the mechanical things and daughters and sons are prepping drinks and banh mi! I always get Xa Xiu (sweet pork) Banh Minh. It's the pork loin seasoned with xa xiu. The bread was light and airy. So much like the french bread! I always get a Vietnamese frozen coffee with boba! With the limited choices in Boba in New Orleans, I'm pretty picky about the choices. I only come here when I need groceries at HK market and always order the same red bean with boba. They definitely do an excellent job with the drink. It is consistently good and the tapioca is always perfectly cooked and not too chewy or hard. Dragged my husband out here after begging to go for months and he was absolutely in love with the place (his argument: why does he need to try Vietnamese poboys when he already has a favorite poboy in the city). He loved it. The bread was super warm and soft, but with a nice crunchy outside, he got the sweet roasted pork with homemade sriracha mayo and I got the combo pork. I actually think I ate his sandwich, but I don't care. It was like a nice rich sweet/savory pork stew with cucumbers, carrots, and jalapenos. He loved the homemade sriracha mayo and the banana bubble tea was quite wonderful, too! Service was attentive and quick (minimum $5 purchase) and at $4.25 a sandwich it's easy to do. After living in California and traveling to Taiwan (where boba was invented in the 1980s), it's hard to find a place that matches up in quality, especially down south. Mr. Bubbles comes pretty close - hands down the best option in the New Orleans area. So far, I've stuck to my usuals - taro, milk tea, honeydew, and avocado. The pearls have always been perfect with just the right amount of chewiness. The avocado smoothie was made with real avocado (my #1 test for any bubble tea place with that option). And the milk tea had a strong jasmine flavor (necessary for any jasmine milk tea in my book). One star off because sometimes the bubble tea can be a bit too sweet and/or powdery. Worst mango bubble tea I've ever had. I watched her make it and she only put like 1/2 of a tiny spoonful of mango flavoring powder and maybe a tablespoon of milk. It had no flavor whatsoever. I spied Mr. Bubbles on our way out of Hong Kong Market after doing some grocery shopping. Grocery shopping is a chore, chores deserve treats, and boba is always one of my favorite treats. So a quick stop at Mr. Bubbles became imperative. We ordered the mango and the Thai tea. The mango was okay. They probably used Mexican mangoes instead of the infinitely more superior Filipino mangoes. Then again, I am biased. If you told me I could only eat one food (food, not fruit) for the rest of my life, Philippine mango would probably be on the top of my list. The Thai tea had too much ice but maybe we should have asked for less. With friendly service and decent prices, I would be happy to go back to try their other flavors.
