First of all, I will admit this is an old school place. They've been there for many years. You can also tell by their mannerisms and everything else their family own, which I like. Little rough around the edges and if you're a pussy, don't go there. If you don't like something or something goes the wrong way, keep your cool and go in with a sense of humor and keep using it. It generally will work. I have bought tons of different types of gravel from them over the years. I think I'm paying a little bit more but they've got the best drivers in town and probably anywhere else. They haven't smashed anything like others have. read more

I live nearby and came in expecting a friendly neighborhood masonry store. I was ready to buy about 60 sq. ft. of stone for a home landscaping project. Initial impressions: The yard is unpaved, with clouds of dust everywhere and numerous potholes that make walking unsafe. Forklifts drive right past customers without any barriers or warning signals -- a serious accident waiting to happen. I figured I'd just buy my stone quickly and leave. I was wrong. I picked out the stone I wanted, but was told they wouldn't open a pallet unless I bought the entire thing. Fair enough. They directed me to an open pallet instead -- requiring me to walk through the hazardous yard again -- but that pallet contained mostly damaged stone. Other customers nearby noticed the same. When I asked for help, the yard employee sent me to the manager. What should have been a 20-minute visit turned into a frustrating ordeal. The manager greeted me with hostility, saying, "I don't set the policies." I calmly explained that the available pallet was damaged and asked if there was another solution. He became visibly irritated and accused me of being "difficult" for not wanting to spend $500 on broken materials. I also mentioned that the yard should follow OSHA forklift safety rules -- since forklifts were operating around customers with no warning lights or sounds. At that point, the manager completely lost his composure. He yelled at me and told me to "go back to [my country of origin]." I'm from Europe and have a slight accent. He repeated the remark again and refused to sell to me. Because I was denied service based on my nationality -- a protected category -- I began filming. The manager quickly retreated to his office. The owner then came out and, instead of addressing the behavior, joined in by yelling that I was "difficult" and that he had a right to refuse service. That may be true, but not on the basis of nationality or origin. I reported the incident to the police, and legal action is being pursued. In summary: * Unsafe, dusty, and uneven yard -- check * Terrible customer service and lack of professionalism -- check * Open bigotry and illegal denial of service based on nationality -- check I went to Peninsula Building Materials in Livermore afterward and had a completely different experience -- friendly staff, clean yard, undamaged stone, and zero hostility. This business has no place in a diverse community like San Ramon. Avoid it until they're held accountable or go out of business. read more

First time I went, they were straightforward and said they don't carry gravel of the size for zen garden, and pointed me to American Rock & Soil. That was pretty much normal. The second time I went, I asked where are the flagstones, and one guy (not Jose) pointed me to the general direction and told me to start with the forklift guy outside. I said I just wanted to first take a look, and asked if they allow hand picking (as I know some stores do). This is where it went really unpleasant: Jose said no. I said sure I understand, I will just take a look. He said no hand picking a second time, as if he hadn't heard me. I was patient and said understood. And asked if every flagstone is in that area. Jose said no hand picking the third time. I said I can't be picking stones by myself even if I wanted to, and is it okay to just browse. Jose said annoyedly: you were here just a week ago, pretty much scolding me. The other guy said of course you can in a normal courteous tone to try to calm things down. I can't fathom, to this day, why Jose acted the way he did. Anyhow, I browsed the yard, and came back to the store to line up for a price sheet. When it was my turn and Jose was to serve me, he went to the fax machine clearly trying to avoid me, and eventually he can't evade me anymore, I requested a price sheet and he gave it to me, and I left right away. On both visits, I saw no smile from anyone but some strangely sycophantic customer (towards Jose, who did not reciprocate). This was the first stone yard I went to, so I checked out two other yards to see if this attitude is common in stone yards. No, those two other places were normal shops, especially Acapulco, whose clerk was very warm and responsive and the yard worker was hard working (lifted three very heavy rocks out of the crate and loaded into my trunk by hand). American Rock's rock guy Theo felt a little bit impersonal, but still normal. My only explanation after reading other 1 stars and 5 stars is that they only like to be a wholesaler to contractors (my contractor recommended it to me in the first place). If you are a consumer, they don't care about your business. On a good day, someone other than Jose may treat you normally, but you don't want to find out. They may be a regional monopoly, but that attitude is driving me to 40 minutes away to Acapulco and American Rock for normal customer service and much better selections (American Rock). read more

I have been so upset after going to this place for gravel. They were not at all helpful but the worse part is after giving measurements they sold me 2X the amount I needed. I did not expect a smile or a chat but a little more help would have been nice. I would be careful going here unless you 100% know exactly how much material you need or you are going to get taken for a ride. These guys are total jerks every time I go in. Loader barely looked at me to get what I needed. Asked a couple of questions he ignored me. When I paid the price went up significantly for the same rocks bought a week earlier. When I paid the desk clerk just looked at me with a blank frown when I asked about the price increase. I asked again and he said it is what it is. Then when he got the receipt he slapped it down and turned his back. No hellos, no can I help you's and no thank you's. They're not doing you a favor as they act. Do yourself a favor and go the LH Voss. Cheaper, faster, better selection and friendly. These guys must be eating their rocks for breakfast. Bait and Switch, the masonry stone I thought I ordered and what arrived were two separate products. The product they did try to pawn off was old, weathered, and completely unusable. The box it was sitting in looked like it had been outside for a year. Very rudely, they argued that was the stone and there were no refunds. Once I demanded a refund the company became very hostile and threatening. I'll get my refund one way or another by my advice is stay away from this company, there are many other providers of masonry products in the San Ramon, CA area. My landscaper recommend that we stopped by here to check out their paver selection. You can park on San Ramon Valley if you want to avoid driving/parking in the dirt lot. Was greeted fairly quick when my wife and I walked into the main office. Jeff helped answer some questions on pavers, gave us a brochure, and directed us to where the samples were. He was friendly and helpful. It was nice to see the patterns and colors in person. There is a noticeable difference in colors between the web site/brochure and physical stones. read more

DANGER. Do not go to Morgan's! Long story short. They delivered 12 yards of the wrong material, and refused to take it back. I had proof that they delivered the wrong material, but they still would not accept responsibility for their mistake. Their response was, "mistakes happen and they cost money". Ultimately, I was able to return the material on my own by finding a truck, bobcat and neighborly help (3 trips to return the material). Every step of the way the staff at Morgan's tried to put up roadblocks to prevent me from returning the material. Customer service does not exist at this business and how they remain in business is a mystery. If you have a need for their products you should go elsewhere. These people are rude, arrogant, and incompetent. Consider yourself warned. read more

This place other than being convenient to our house, I have nothing positive to say about this place. We needed pavers for our backyard and boy what a mistake that was to order it from them. They told us in one week we will receive our order and had it in writing as well. Not only they didn't deliver them in a week, they were unresponsive to our phone calls when we left message after message, and when they did answer our call, they would say "oh, let me check on it and call you back" which they never did!!!! Not a friendly store for newbies or small scale buyers. The store has secret rules that the staff doesn't bother to explain beforehand. When I came to the first time to the store and asked for their rules I was told: "go outside, pick what you need and someone will come to help you". And this was exactly what I did and everything was just fine. However today the rules changed and despite me following the same process like first time, I was charged twice the price. Unfortunately, I could not walk away from them because, I already started my project with this particular stone and had to finish it at that very day. I strongly suspect the store manager just made up this rule on the spot, as nobody else in the store was aware of this. In the end, their ~30 stepping stones costed me twice as much as something similar from Home Depot, with a nice bonus of being humiliated and talked down by the staff. So, if you have a small project like mine, then beware: ask for all the rules in advance, ask for someone to assist you end to end, prepare for a mostly grumpy stuff that really have no time for such a "lame business" like yours. read more

Have been going to this place for several years but this is my first review. I usually know what I want when I go there, be it landscape rocks, mulch, or topsoil so I don't need help in the yard but from what I've seen they are more than happy to come out if you go in the office and tell them what you're interested in. Sometimes they are quite busy and you have to queue inside but the employees are very helpful when you get to the counter. Bulk prices always better than buying bags at hardware stores. read more

Although their yard appears well stocked with rocks and bricks their sales assistants on three different occasions act as if they are doing you a favor and/or you have disrupted their day by showing up. Avoid the store if you can and go to Brickyards in Concord instead. As a female being asked where my contractor was and "this is what I need to tell" my contractor even after I stated that I was the individual conducting the job takes me back to the 1940's in the movies. I first called to get a price for lava rock. I was told there is a 2 cubic yard minimum for delivery & it would be $162 & $45 for delivery. The next day I went in person to make sure it was the correct product. I mentioned the price I was told on the phone & he said yes. I took out my credit card to pay for the transaction & the guy just wrote down my info on a little note pad. I questioned this procedure & he said he had everything he needed & would call me the next day for the delivery. As I was leaving I mentioned the price again, $162 plus $45, & he said yes. Now I know why he did this transaction the way he did. The driver came & handed me the invoice & it was $324 for the rock & $49 for delivery. Never once out of the 3 price quotes was I told it was $324 for the rock, & I'm sure that was intentional. These guys are scammers !!! If you are planning on using them, make sure you get your price quote in writing. I'll go elsewhere next time. read more

Morgan's Masonry has the WORST customer service of any business in the East Bay. My staff & I have been consistently treated with disrespect, ignorance & abruptness on every visit. We have purchased several thousand dollars of rock & stone from them because they are located near our home. Over the last month we have been in the store a dozen times & have just as many examples of poor service. Most recently I waited for 10 minutes in line while one employee casually conversed with & rang up another customer, another sat at a desk & a third pontificated about the absurd requirement to wear face masks to another man who was waiting for help. When I got tired of waiting I walked out. The man who had ignored me completely interrupted his loud monologue to say said, "Did you have a question?" I left the store & hope to never have to return. Many other examples of substandard service come to mind, but the bottom line is that the employees treat customers with an attitude of impatience & in a condescending manner that is never worth the products they sell. If you don't know EXACTLY what you want and don't use the appropriate lingo they'll look on you as a waste of time. "Crushed rock for pavers??" "Yeah, to put under the pavers as a base" "You mean, paver base" "Yes, that" "Would be easier if you called it that" What!?? And then, to rub it in after you manage to get your order confirmed they never show up when they promised. Three days later I call on the morning of the intended delivery (Friday) with construction guys waiting around to start. "Oh, we can't do today. It'll have to be Monday now" When you go to cancel the dispatcher blames the sales guy (who confirmed with the dispatcher in the first place). I recently bought 1400 pounds of landscape pebbles from Morgans and picked it up from their distributor in Hayward. It was loaded onto my truck on a pallet of which there were supposed to be 30 bags, upon arriving home I received only 25 bags. The distributor would not deal with directly to correct issue so Bob talked to their sales representative to get my 5 extra bags. Was building raised beds this spring and needed soil to fill those up. Had ordered 2 yards of planter mix from Morgan masonry. Quality of the soil mix was terrible. Found several plastic pieces and sharp glass objects. I will not order from these folks again. I ordered Diablo mix from Danville Sloat garden center that can be used for the planter boxes without the need for any amendments. Delivery charges were less too. Think about it. read more

Spoke to warehouse directly and they said the store decides how it is sold. Also refused to come outside and look at sample, even though no one else was in the store. After spending days shopping for the perfect stone slabs for my garden steps at Morgan's and getting permission from an employee at the front desk to pick thicker stone steps from a lower layer of a pallet, I arrived to make my purchase of dozens of flagstone sized River stones for a path along with two even larger stone steps. I was told that I was not allowed to buy large stones from a layer down on the pile. After being told the day before that I could! This was a pile mostly of stones from another pallet that were not even the same stone type! I told them I was buying over a dozed stones to the tune of over $1,000 and all I needed was two thicker stones as well. I hired babysitters for the morning to be able to get the stone. Not only did they stew me over and treat me like trash off the street, they cost me money and an entire weekend of lost time on my project. There is no way in Hell that a contractor or professional landscaper would be treated this way. I have shopped at Morgan's dozens of times for mulch, stone, and decomposed gravel over the years and will NEVER return. They lost my business as well as my family and friend's business.
