For $5 each (as opposed to the $50 each at Biltmore) we got a good look at a home that was built in 1815 & added to in 1840. It was so interesting to see the different wood, building techniques, and even the configuration of the home as it survived these past 199 years! There was a wonderful docent, I believe her name was Dotty ( but I'm not good with names so forgive me if that's not right.) She was a terrific guide and so attached to the place. It really is a great little house to tour and would be a terrific educational outing for kids. We drove past it twice as the town's brochures just state that "its on Hwy 280" - great guys, thanks. It is on 280, just past the Walmart look for the Taco Bell, turn left after the Taco Bell up into the pine trees on the gravel road. Led by Mr. Dwayne, the tour is an hour and a half learning about the Burton Street Community, a historically Black neighborhood in West Asheville and the victim of gentrification and highway expansions. Hood Huggers was created to serve as a champion for the 1912 neighborhood and its long-time residents. My wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I booked a Sunday morning tour. Since it was just us, he gave us the option to walk it or take his little shuttle. Mr. Dwayne gave us the background on the area before Mr. Cotton, the grandson of the man who founded the neighborhood, joined us with a book of photos. After a drive, we ended at the Peace Gardens and Market, a sacred space for the community.

He also shared a lot of historical information of the schools and colleges in the area that were very prominent years ago. I will definitely recommend this tour hands down to give you more of a historical African-American background of the city based on the money that we spent I feel that it was a great value for the tour that we received the service was outstanding by our tour guide and hands-down. However, after driving an hour from Asheville. I was disappointingly surprised that they were closed. Not only was I bummed, but it appeared that other patrons as well. My guess is they decided to close on Veterans Day and didn't bother to tell anyone, but themselves. I am not from North Carolina, but live in Texas full time. It would be nice for them to post updated hours that they abide by.

Even though we got there super early, because of the holiday, there was a HUGE line getting into Devils Fork Park with the park rangers checking in with every vehicle - the rangers were turning away everyone without a parking reservation. I called Eclectic Sun and the nice lady on the phone said to show them our kayak reservation confirmation and that she would have a parking spot saved for us. Because we were in line for 1+ hours, we didn't get in until way after our reservation time but everyone was super nice and adjusted the time for us. The guys at the life jacket rental and down by the water helping people get in and out of their kayaks were also all very nice. All kayaks they had seemed to be in great shape, we had no problem using ours. Once you're out in the water, you can just dock it at any beach area you find around the lake (even though it was a busy day at the lake, there are so many beaches, you can easily find an empty one). We will definitely come back and rent one out again!
