We didn't find Kelly until my son was 7 weeks old and we really struggled with breastfeeding up until that point. After just one appointment with Kelly we saw a huge difference! My son was able to feed more effectively and his sucking reflex was activated. We only needed two appointments with Kelly for her to make a total difference to our breastfeeding journey. She came over after I had gone into labor and helped us stay home as long as possible before transitioning to the hospital, where she further assisted me in laboring for several more hours without pain meds before it became obvious that things had become stalled and I needed an epidural. After that point she easily guided the transition to later stages and made suggestions to the care team that almost certainly helped me avoid a c-section. After going through this I can see how easy it would be to have a really scary and traumatic birth experience, but with Merrie by my side it was super empowering and positive. I was looking for an in person consultation to help me with breastfeeding my baby who was born…read moreduring August 2020. Everywhere I went, LCs were only doing virtual consultations. I didn't think virtual only was going to help me build my milk supply and I kept asking for referrals until someone sent me to Shari. In the hospital, the lactation consultant told me that she didn't think I was ever going to be able to have enough supply for my baby. Sure enough, I was struggling so much with my milk supply that my baby lost too much weight in her first few days. I was told by my pediatrician to do triple feeding (breastfeed, then give a bottle, and then pump). I was only able to provide about 20% of my baby's food needs. Shari visited me promptly after I reached out. She came to my home (everyone wore masks) with her baby scale in tow. We figured out how much my baby weighed, how much milk she took in from a feed, and Shari observed the feeding and offered tips on positioning - both for breastfeeding as well as for the supplemental bottles. Within 4 weeks (3 total visits) with Shari, I was able to provide 100% of my baby's milk. Now I even have a frozen storage of excess milk! I am so grateful to Shari for her help and expertise. Without her, I honestly don't think I would have been able to breastfeed.
