This place was simply adorable! I felt like I walked into the living room of a tiny chic house I always wanted but am too uncool to actually own. The pale colors, marble, and big flowered wallpaper all cane together quite well. My friend and I sat at the bar and had some fabulous drinks. He had the Gloria, made with gin and Campari, and said it was excellent. He followed with a dry martini and enjoyed that too. I had the oaxacan sunshine, because I'm a big fan of mezcal, and it did not disappoint. The strawberry and lemon complement the mezcal so well. I also liked its presentation with the flurry of ice and a tiny straw/spoon. I followed that with a gentleman's buck - bourbon, orange, lemon, and a bit of fizzy water. Also very good, especially with the candied ginger on the side. We also got some snacks - sardines and St. Albans cheese. The tray was so adorable I almost didn't want to eat, but we did! I'll be the first to admit that my food choices totally didn't match my drink choices, but everything was great! And for a downtown DC bar, not insanely expensive. I'd definitely recommend it, but watch out that it's not a busy time at the convention center - I beg it gets overwhelmed quickly then. read more

Randomly stumbled across Morris American Bar while trying to kill time before our dinner reservation nearby. We sat out on the patio but the inside was decorated pretty neat! Would love to enjoy a drink indoors next time. They have a taco food truck outside, which was really good. I ordered the vegetarian taco and the mini quesadilla; both were delicious but I would order 10 more quesadillas next time, they're amazing! They offer a guest bartender menu on top of their regular cocktail menu, which is such a fun concept! My favorite drink was the Jamaican Gentleman. The only downside to our visit was the urine smell on the patio corner our table was located. It's out of their control but definitely took away from the experience. read more

Morris American Bar isn't what you expect. It's literally inside the sterile looking Convention Center so it's easy to miss the door when walking by. However, once inside it's anything but boring. It's the perfect little cocktail bar. They have several rooms for dining and a long bar for those of us wanting a drink. It's a very casual classy place with beautiful wallpaper giving it Gatsby style (you know, from the book The Great Gatsby). The bartenders are friendly and know what they are doing. In addition to wine, beer, and cider, they have a great seasonal cocktail menu that often changes. Each drink is $12 (not bad for a quality drink in DC) and it's $2 off until 7pm for happy hour. I went with the bartender's choice and had an excellent drink. If you want a classy chill happy hour spot with beautiful atmosphere, head to Morris American Bar. It's in Mt Vernon Square so there are plenty of other excellent dinner spots to go to afterwards (I recommend the Kinship!). read more

Super cute place! Came here at night on a date, loved the ambiance and lighting. First we were seated at a table and one of the waiters recommended some drinks to each of our tastes (a strawberry martini for me) and both of us loved the drinks he picked out! Then we moved to the bar to sit, and we asked the bartender if she could make something similar to what each of us had before. She delivered! She made us both drinks to our tastes, (sweet for me), both drinks were her own invention. She was really sweet and talked to us. Morris is without a doubt an absolute gem of a cocktail bar and my personal favorite. The bartenders are not only inventive but also thoroughly well-versed in classics and contemporary drinks. You can tell the whole team is proud of their bar, and it really shows. The seasonal menu is their own impressive creation, but make no mistake, they gladly take requests and offer new suggestions. Inside is a time capsule of a classic bar. The colors, décor, lighting, music - it is the perfect place for relaxing drinks. Outside is shaded and casual, exactly what you want for a group of friends. Other bars even the often lauded "Bests in DC" have fallen short of what Morris is consistently doing here in terms of quality, knowledge, skill, and service. You get way more than what you pay for here. As amazing as it all is, it is not at all stuffy. Everybody is friendly, easygoing, and enjoys what they are doing. This review is long overdue and could not be more well deserved. One of the cutest cocktail bars I've been to in DC and reasonably priced drinks (all cocktails are $12!!!). Walked in without a reservation Saturday night around 930pm and there were plenty of seats. The interior is very different from most dimly lit cocktail bars. Pretty ambiance, brighter lighting, cute decor, clean, doesn't smell like cigars, and friendly service. Their menu changes monthly, and we weren't too fond of the cocktails on the menu so we asked for the 'bartenders choice' every time we ordered (8 drinks total). I prefer vodka so all of my drinks had some sort of vodka and fruit mix to it. True to a cocktail bar, every drink was strong and the presentation was great. The bartenders definitely know what they are doing here. I honestly don't remember every single drink I ordered, but I do remember I liked the vodka/honey/raspberry combo the best. FYI they offer no food, only nuts if you ask. Definitely worth checking out especially because the prices are so doable for a cocktail bar (I feel like most cocktail bars charge an average of $15-20 per drink). read more

My friend and I came in on a Thursday evening and were sat immediately. We were given the choice between the bar and a table. I'd recommend a table for good catch-ups between you and your companion and the bar when you're interesting in chatting with the bartender or watching the magic behind the bar creations! The people at Morris bar are part of what makes the place very special. Each drink is made to be the best it can be. The menu changes monthly which shows the passion that goes into creating a menu that's dynamic and interesting. I choose the Imperial Buck and then a bartender's choice. Everything from the presentation of the drinks in the glassware, the fun garnishes, or the layering of the colored components make each a special, and tasty experience. For any solo bar-goers who just want a drink & not be bothered on a Sat night, I'd suggest this place. They played chill r&b musics & beats at a volume expected at a bar during the weekend, but I still enjoyed it. I asked for a "quieter" and less busy spot and the hostess led me upstairs. One of the best non speak easy speakeasies out there! The aesthetic is a nice baby blue and the ambiance is clean, calm and collected. There is seating at the bar level and an area that overlooks the bar on the second level. They don't offer espresso martinis and their counter is this beautiful White Russian with a nice heavy whipping cream finish on top. The reason I go here is because of that and it is good goos. Usually White Russians are supposed to be very strong alcoholic wise but this was even, clean and sweet. read more

This bar is super cute inside. The interior reminds me of a small speak-easy. The drinks are great too and you can tell a lot of thought and care are put into every detail of the place. It has a very upscale feel to it. The employees are very kind and professional. However, there was one man, he wasn't a bartender or host, maybe the manager? Who had an arrogant attitude about everything. He wasn't very pleasant and it made us feel a little unwelcome and uncomfortable. Street parking is available but can be hard with certain streets are permit only. Metro or shared rides are best to get here. Definitly not a place for kids, happy hour is ok. Suspendered waiters, dim lighting, pale blue walls with vintage mirrors and no standing room all lend this place a classy, relaxed vibe great for a date or just a friendly drink. There are tables on the bar level as well as above the bar up a small staircase. It is table service only. No standing means you will need to leave your name and likely wait. For us, on Saturday night around 9:30 we were quoted 30 minutes, and that was right about on the mark. They texted when a table was ready. The drinks are phenomenally well mixed and deliciously composed. After two visits we have sampled 6 different drinks, and all were great. It is expensive, but for drinks this good, it's worth the expense for a special occasion. The menu changes frequently, so come back early and often! read more

Attention to detail! As a fellow bartender it can be hard not to drink at home for cheap because you don't want to pay 16 dollars for a craft cocktail because a. You can make it yourself and b. You ain't making that kind of money to just throw down 16 dollars for a single drink knowing you'd probably spend 100 dollars before you're even buzzed. Juices and syrups are made fresh on a daily basis and they have a moderately sized but well curated selection of liquors. Multiple atomizers filled with aromatic spirits and garnishes for days. Bartenders shake with a large cut cube which is the optimal way to cool your drink with minimal dilution and impurities from tap water that may impact taste. They also offer hand carved sphere ice - in 12 dollar cocktails! What!!1!1? You know you've had that unremarkable Bloody Mary or mimosa in dc for 12 dollars. What's special about this bar is that they don't overwhelm you with drink selections (their featured cocktails offered about 5 choices) and instead encourage you to communicate your taste to your bartender. The guys are knowledgeable and have a little flair (shaker tossing, something I won't try) without being tacky. Not to mention this is an ideal date spot - intimate space, not overwhelmingly loud, impressive drinks, won't break the bank. What's not to love? read more

They did a great job spacing parties out to avoid issues with Covid protocol. Our bartender was impeccable, knowledgeable, friendly and quick! What more could you ask for? This was a pretty cool cocktail bar located in the Mt. Vernon convention center. The decor inside is pretty interesting and eye catching and they also have a covered outdoor patio area. There's a long bar as soon as you walk in, some seating up the stairs in addition to a sofa seat and small tables in the corner away from the bar. Service was good initially but then there was a change in the waitress which only left the bartender to manage the bar and my table which made getting drinks later on in the night a little more difficult then I would've liked but he did his best to accommodate. The fall cocktail menu list had several different cocktail options I gave the "tiger's tail" a try which I wasn't too big of a fan of, a bit bitter to the taste but gin is generally of an acquired taste. I then opted for their weekly cocktail menu and tried the "Russian fruit shake" which comes with fresh fruits which turned out to be a much better choice, a well balanced drink overall and much easier on the palette. The cocktails are priced around $13 so pretty typical for the area. All in all a really good bar for intimate outings, doesn't appear to get overly crowded, and you can actually have a conversation without overbearing music in the background or just being a generally loud bar due to having a large capacity of patrons. read more

Came here about a month ago with some friends, and sat outside. The outside area is pretty loud, and the seating is at picnic tables. The table was a little tight for our group of six, but it didn't seem like there was more seating available, at least none that was offered to us. The drinks were good, but incredibly expensive. I bought three drinks and one small appetizer, and ended the night with an $80 bill. Like I said, the drinks were good, but I don't think they were worth that much, especially given how small they are. The food menu is very small. I had the beer cheese appetizer, which was pretty good, but not a lot of food. I would look at the food menu in advance and decide if it seems worth it to you or if you'd rather plan to eat ahead of time. All in all, I might come back, but with a plan to order no more than two drinks for the sake of my wallet. The inside seemed nice and like a better option than the outside seating, so I would opt for that if I were to come back. read more

We stopped in here and didn't actually stay for more than 5 minutes. This might be an unfair review but we walked in and our group of 5 wasn't allowed to stand for 2 open seats at the bar because it was near the doorway so they sat us upstairs which is super narrow and our group still couldn't sit together. The waiter came over and I asked about beers and he told me they had a Pale Ale on draft...nobody likes Pale Ale outside of 90 degrees on a summer day at a BBQ. He said they are more of a "cocktail" bar. Someone tried to order a Captain and Coke and... no Captain. Lastly, someone asked what kind of vodkas they had and he told us potato or wheat...huh? This place seems to have good reviews but for some out of towners looking for a chill drink spot at 10pm, not for us. Want to take a step back to a 1920s speakeasy with amazing drinks and knowledgable and friendly bartenders? Morris is your place. It pains me to write a review of a place I hold so dear, not wanting to let the secret out. But yes, Morris holds one of my top spots in D.C. for best bars. It's not well-located near bar-hopping hotspots like Adams Morgan or Georgetown. And you'd never know what's inside until you actually step in--there's a curtain hiding the entire establishment from the outside. Once you are inside though, you will find an open space with plenty of corner or bar seating to share with friends or take a date for a quiet evening. The upstairs area used to have booths, but they seemed to give way to a more expansive space for larger groups to hang on barstools. David Strauss writes the monthly menu and oversees the entirety of the bar. Be sure to ask for the Schaatsen cocktail if you like gin. I had this in December, but bartenders know the menus from each month and will happily make your favorite drink even if it drops off the menu. Even better, you can ask for the bartender's choice and have any of the experienced mixologists whip you up something that fits your fancy. Something smokey? Something sweet? Like gin and tonics but want to order something that elevates your palate a bit more? The bartenders will find something that you will enjoy. Don't be afraid to let them take over. The drinks are well priced at $12 and are $2 off for happy hour. Just don't tell your friends and keep the secret of Morris alive. read more

I came here for its 1-year anniversary party, having looked forward to visiting this bar for awhile. The following review is based on that party, rather than a general visit to the bar. We were all required to RSVP for the party, which we thought guaranteed us entrance when we got there, but apparently, the RSVP was for the bar's benefit--not ours. It doesn't quite make sense because it seemed like the bar would have approached the situation in the same way no matter how many people. What does it do on a normal Friday night? Are there usually not many people who come? And, the way the RSVP was worded, we all were REQUIRED to RSVP if attending, but we weren't even asked if we RSVP'd when we arrived. Luckily, we weren't forced to wait out in the frigid cold and soon were able to grab a seat at the bar. In the meantime, we sampled some of the hors d'œuvres (finger food like veggies with dip, meat, and cheeses). The pictures probably don't do it justice, but those food trays were PICKED OVER. Looked like savages had taken a stab at each of them, probably due in part to the fact that there was no appropriate serving knife for the cheese. In fact, TWO of the tongs used to serve the food were BROKEN, likely intentionally to just cut the cheese! It was a bit disorganized, and the fact that there were broken pieces of a tong somewhere on the food tray is unsettling. It's not like you can easily cut Brie cheese with tongs or a fork (and that's all the bar had out). Knife please? When we did sit down, we had an enjoyable time. The drinks were each interesting (one had hot sauce and another bourbon and wine together). I got the smash with a little less sweet. While it wasn't my favorite, it wasn't bad, and the bartender specifically told me that if I wasn't satisfied with it, she would assuredly make me another. The ambiance was nice, with live jazz music in the background, but we just so happened to be sitting right in front of the musicians so had to talk loudly. Wish the music was a bit softer! Upon closing out, we received a little bottle of alcohol (maybe a bartender's concoction?). All in all, it was a nice night to catch up with a friend, but I wish the planning that went into the party was a bit better, or that the place just treated it like a normal Friday night. read more

One word. Class. Pure Class. When you walk into the bar, the first thing you notice is how light and quite honestly, heavenly the space is. From the seating to the adorable loft, this establishment made me feel like I was in a classy movie from the moment I walked in. What was also classy were the bartenders. When we first walked in, they immediately served us cucumber infused water in little glasses. It was sooo hot out so this was appreciated. But what really did it for me, was when the bartender got busy and a bit neglectful, he gave us a free round and apologized for being overwhelmed. He certainly did not have to do that and we were pleasantly surprised. I love this bar, and will vouch for it all day, everyday. My hubby and I stumbled upon it when my buddy was in town, and it was dope. The space is beautiful. The colors, furniture, murals...perfect. You can totally enjoy a romantic cocktail here, or meet for a casual drink. We sat at the bar, and really enjoyed watching the mixologists do their thing. They had a lot of interesting ingredients, and I know this is silly, but I loved the glassware. I'm such a sucker for a beautiful vessel. Each cocktail was beautiful! I also love smelling my cocktails before I drank them. They all smelled as good as they tasted. We also really enjoyed talking to the mixologists. It is really nice to chat with people who are really passionate about their craft. They even made us some off-the-menu cocktails. We wanted to try some of the concoctions they were working on. Quite a cool place to get cocktails. There's a vintage vibe to it when you enter. It's as if you're in a movie scene from the 50s/60s. It's kinda cool in my opinion. I really like the cocktails too.
