I was planning a weekend trip to Monterey and my friend had recommended this hidden gem to me. The service was friendly and our waitress, Michelle, was very attentive and was patient explaining what the local favorites were. My family ended up getting the open-face crab sandwich and the Hawaiian sea bass. The crab sandwich was excellent as the meat was fresh and plentiful. The side of artichoke was also cooked to perfection and very fresh. The fish was super moist and flavorful and I decided to add on a side of fried artichoke hearts, which was worth the extra price. It was also very convenient that there was outdoor seating, which was perfect for our dog. They even gave my Golden Retriever a bowl of water (bonus points)! Went here off of a recommendation and I'm glad I did. This quaint little spot was perfect for a delicious meal. Small but had a good atmosphere and friendly environment. Street parking that was very easy to do. The back painting of the building really helps set the mood which was adorable. I got the Seabass special and was not disappointed. The fries were the perfect amount of crispy and the fish was flavorful without being too soft or too hard. The clam chowder tasted like exactly what you're expected and I was glad for that. Neat spot offering casual dining and FRIED ARTICHOKES (and more)! Put that in all caps as there are a few spots that fry artichoke hearts but it can be difficult to find the actual vendor or restaurant going off a street side sign that just says, "fried artichokes". Haha The service was wonderful. They confirmed one order ($12) is great to share between two people and would be too much for one person. Chokes were served hot and sent off with a paper bag, some lemon slices (I think but don't see in my photo), delicious cocktail sauce and good tartar sauce. My mom and I were full after having a very light breakfast about 1-2 hours earlier - fried foods can do that. Neat stuff on the walls and they have exposed outdoor dining tables (west facing and exposed on all sides except the building on the east and no umbrellas or overhead cover - not ideal if windy) with a fun ocean motif to take your photo in front of on a fake dock. Right off Hwy 1. It's difficult to re-enter the highway (rude Californians - all it takes is ease off the accelerator and let a person gun it and go - road is choppy) onto the NB side during high traffic on a Friday around 5:00, so bring patience. read more

Delicious food in an unfussy restaurant, exactly what we were hoping for. My husband and I stopped in Moss Landing Cafe for dinner during our road trip. The restaurant was pleasantly quiet and had nice music. I really liked the style inside: tables had sweet fresh flowers, fishing and oceanic photos hung on the walls. I ordered a daily fish option (halibut) with butter wine sauce, veggies, rice, and salad. My husband ordered skirt steak with veggies, potatoes, and clam chowder. Everything was amazing! We cook almost everyday at home and often feel that our home cooked food is better than what we eat out, but not here! I aspire to make halibut how this restaurant does, and the skirt steak was perfectly cooked to medium. We both loved the clam chowder and the salad dressing seemed really fresh and high quality. We felt the food was well worth the price for the area, our food was $26/person before tips and was near our hotel (Captain's Inn, which we also really like). We left dinner feeling satisfied and delighted. Service was polite, attentive, and didn't hover. Overall 10/10, we will be back if we ever find ourselves in Moss Landing again. read more

Went to the cafe for an early lunch. We shared the Deep fried Artichoke hearts trying both dipping sauces and wow definitely did not disappoint. The artichokes were fried to perfection and each sauce brought out different flavors. We shared the Open faced crab sandwich and the server without even asking split the plates for us which is great service. The steamed artichoke on the side was a perfect side dish. We definitely loved the quaint ambiance, fresh flowers at each table was a great touch. We are in town for a few days and will definitely be back. read more

This was a tough one. I wanted to love this place going in. Expectations were high because of the almost 5 stars. But here Denver Omelet was missing green bell peppers and did not resemble an omelette. I would classify it as a ham and onion scramble. Nice chunks of ham and fresh onion for sure but if there was cheese, I couldn't detect it and unfortunately there were no green peppers. It landed in front of me about 5 long minutes after my wife's breakfast burrito came out along with my sourdough toast. As the minutes ticked by my toast lost all warmth but the eggs dish wash fresh and hot. Just not a Denver omelette. The staff was friendly but my food came late and I was starving! Ambience is what you're expect in a beach town roadside cafe. I could have been a much better experience. If 3 is average, this experience was a bit below that. read more

Stopped by this cafe at the recommendation of a friend who insisted we try the deep fried artichokes. I wasn't too big on the deep fried artichokes after trying them myself. Not many actual artichoke heart pieces and a whole lot of fried batter bits instead. The batter for all of the fried items was a little rough and crunchy, not done as well as other places I've tried. The Cajun Fish Sandwich wasn't really seasoned well (could not tell it was Cajun flavored) and the Prawns + Fish Combo was also scraping par for the course. Overall 3/5 because the quality of the ingredients was decent, just lacking in terms of execution. read more

This is our favorite place to have lunch the past 15 years before heading in to Monterey and/or Santa Cruz. We miss Mark (original owner), but Humberto (new owner) has kept the food quality and service the same...excellent! Deep fried artichokes are a must! The grilled Hawaiian sea bass is lightly coated and cooked perfectly. The prawn and crab Louie salad have plentiful seafood; the garlic toast was a bit cold though. The crab sando was filling. Delightful Crab & Shrimp Huevos Racheros, even when eaten as takeout! I originally called the restaurant to see if I could place a takeout order, but no one answered and so I decided to come here in person for that on a Sunday morning. It was the only place in the immediate area that was open on Sundays, so I could tell right away when I'd stepped in how busy it was and with only two employees hustling (and at least 20 diners) that they just weren't able to answer the phones. The employees who were working that day were nice, even though it was so hectic for them and I never received any attitude from them. During the time I stopped by before 8am, the vast majority of the people I saw had dined in and there was only one other person beside me who had done takeout. After placing orders for takeout, I was told that it'd be a 15min wait and sure enough it was ready by then. Even though about 7-10min had passed between picking up the food and eating it and even without a microwave at the room we were staying in nearby, the Huevos Rancheros that I had and the French Toast that my boyfriend ate were both still delicious, which says a lot. Before this most recent time in mid November 2024, I had last stopped by during 2018 for a turkey sandwich and fries and remembered it being good, back then, too. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch and between the two, I safely assume that the place is much busier for breakfast. If you're looking for a place to grab a bite to eat for breakfast and/or lunch in this area, then the Moss Landing Cafe is an excellent choice. read more

It's a super small and locally owned cafe. The employees are very welcoming and the service was pretty quick. This is the first time I came in and it was for a car meet so they were pretty busy but despite how busy they were the service was quick and welcoming and I would definitely come again. They handled the rush very very well and I could only imagine how amazing the service would be if things were a little more relaxed. The food here is always excellent. Everything is fresh and tasty. I had fried shrimp- the batter was lightly seasoned and the shrimp was not over cooked. The coleslaw had a bright flavor and wasn't drowned in dressing. The fries are good and everything was piping hot. I love to have a half steamed artichoke on the side. The shrimp and crab quesadilla my husband ordered had loads of seafood and cheese.and he couldn't finish it all. We each had a cup of clam chowder, perfect size, though a tad pricey but seems to be the norm everywhere nowadays. I had the open faced crab sandwich which was so delicious. Instead of fries, it came with a artichoke and mayo, which was a nice side to have in artichoke county. Friend had the fish and chips which the fish was absolutely fresh, and the double battered fried french fries were absolutely yummy. Another friend had the crab and artichoke omelet, which is a unique breakfast dish. Really good and love that they offer their homemade carrot cake muffin. It was divine! Had lunch there and ordered the Patty Melt. This is gonna sound weird to many people, but I think they may use very lean meat which had a gamey taste to me. I personally did not like the taste of the burger. In addition, I had coleslaw with my sandwich. They really need to step it up. It had very little, really no taste to it. Just mayo on chopped cabbage and some carrot. They really need to add a little coleslaw seasoning, or some crushed pineapple and some raisins would make a world of difference. Eating out has gotten so expensive, I feel like restaurants need to step it up if they are going to charge so much. read more

We had the fish and chips with coleslaw and fries, Cajun chicken sandwich with fries and I had the lunch special of grilled fish, coleslaw and steamed artichoke. The fish and chips were good but the batter didn't have a lot of flavor. Same with the coleslaw. The French fries were excellent and crave-able! The Cajun chicken breast was moist and tasty. I have been here before, but it's been eons. We stopped in today on a flyer. His was good, mine was average. He had fish (Sea Bass) and eggs poached. Also came with hash browns and toast. His was tasty, tartar sauce was really good too. I got the Artichoke scramble and it was meh. The artichokes tasted like they came out of a can. Weird since they are grown down the street? It was very bacon forward, the bacon was ok. The salsa was unceremoniously dumped on top, and it wasn't very good. Overall it just wasn't very good. The hash browns were loose and not crisp or seasoned. The coffee was good. The server was nice but was swamped so his coffee sat empty for a bit. The atmosphere is cozy and clean. Plenty of condiments on the table, which is nice so you don't have to ask. I like that that this is a local spot. We will be back and I will get something else. read more
