Really disappointed with the service at Toro Café. One of our plates was supposed to come with country potatoes, but it came with hashbrowns instead. We let the server know, and she said they couldn't fix it because of their 11:30 cut-off time, but told the cashier to remove it from the bill. When we went to pay, the charge was still there. The cashier argued with me over a mistake on their part and kept repeating, "But he ate it, didn't he?" I replied, "Why didn't you take it off his plate then?" since that's not what he ordered and we were told it would be removed. If they weren't going to correct it, they shouldn't have said they would. Very frustrating experience and poor customer service. read more

Indoor and outdoor seating right between Monterey and Salinas. Perfect stop, came here after hiking at Toro park and grabbed a burger - portion was decent especially for the price. If you're hungry would recommend doubling the patties (at least one burger is a double) but everything tasted great especially the potato salad, and again, was kinda shocked at how decent the prices were just outside of Monterey. Well, first off, apologies for no photo of MY meal (I took photos of my husband's and my sister in laws , but I will paint a picture with words. I ordered the linguisa, eggs over easy, hashbrowns, and a biscuit. You do not see linguisa on menus very often, and it used to be a childhood favorite of mine, so I could not resist. It did not disappoint. Everything was tasty and satisfying. The biscuit was the fluffy kind, I prefer the crispy kind. Do not come here if you are in a rush though. The service is friendly and kind, but definitely on the slow side. It is the kind of place where you settle in, sip your coffee, and enjoy a leisurely breakfast. I'm kicking myself for having driven by this place so many times yet never stopped before! The bovine-focused interior is delightful, it's eclectic and clean. Less than 20 tables, plus a few stools at the breakfast bar. The server was warm and friendly, made sure all was well and we had what we needed. Food was great! Usually at restaurants when I ask if the sausage is links or patties, they'll tell you one or the other. This place offers you both! In addition to the breakfast menu, they also offer pastries. Small cafe for breakfast and lunch. EST 1956. Looks like an old gas station/ market. Taken back when times may have been a bit simpler. I was greeted kindly and seated it has a very quaint feel and very clean. They have a board with morning specials as well as full breakfast menu. I ordered from the specials. Chilaquiles & eggs. It was served with beans and sour cream on the side. The chips were well dressed and the eggs fluffy and cooked perfectly. I ordered mild as I wasn't sure on heat level. I would probably go to medium next time just to up the heat level a bit. Chips were still crispy and slowly some soften up from heat of the eggs and sauce an onions. It was perfectly balanced and one of the best I've had. Coffee is fresh and hot and a nice medium blend with cream or flavor creamers on the side. Toro Place Cafe was a very average brunch place. Parking was pretty rough/awkward during 11:15am on a Saturday, but we managed since the place is located right next to the highway. We were seated very quickly outside on the patio which was very nice! It was a cloudy day and a bit cold outside, but only one of the outdoor heaters was working, out of the ~5 they had :( Service was not great but not horrible. When they served our food, they forgot to give me my side of fruit. We also asked for hot sauce (which every other table except us) and I think they forgot. We ended up asking another waitress after finally managing to flag them down and she quickly brought out my fruits (yum) & hot sauce. I was halfway done with my food though which kinda sucked because I was hungry and hot sauce is a necessity with my eggs! The chicken fried steak reminded of the free lunches I got in middle school It didn't seem like anything special to me-- just a fried slab of underseasoned chicken. I think I made a mistake choosing this, but my friend who got the eggs benedict said it was really good! He finished in 6 bites!!! Toro Place Cafe is a decent brunch spot but I didn't feel like it was anything special. I see a lot of folks bringing and pets here, which is pretty cool and nice. This place is down the road from our house on busy Highway 68. Be careful turning in and turning out. Parking is crazy nuts. People just park wherever most of the time. Right on the highway. This place has been there since my husband went to grade school in our area. And he's 73 now. It's changed owners multiple times of course. It's fun to go in because it's just like out of some 1960 sitcom just an old diner small cramped crowded put in an old old house probably more than 100 years old easily. It also has a outdoor area for when it's warm enough to sit outdoors. Highly recommend their ginormous cinnamon rolls. They are off the charts delicious crunchy bake top with the frosting on it and soft soft clouds of dough on the inside. Good strong cinnamon flavor too. They have a nice variety of breakfast items. I do love their corned beef hash with poached eggs on it. My husband loves their omelettes of which they have many varieties. He usually loves the cheese and bacon omelette. The eggs are nice and fluffy in the omelette and they're not chintzy with the cheese or the bacon. Their biscuits and gravy are a nice creamy mix of sausage gravy with lots of pepper in it the way I like it and their biscuits would float off the plate by themselves if they didn't have gravy on top. Service is extremely friendly and good quality. A lot of the servers have been working there for years and live locally in the neighborhood. They have beer that you could have with your burgers if you want and every sandwich that I've tried there and I've tried most of them are well-made and very flavorful. No bland food here. All in all they do a great job. It's nice to have something so close because we have no other services out here where we live but to them giving good quality food and good customer service is more important than making money off a captive audience and I appreciate that. I tried to get a table here a few weeks ago on a Saturday morning. It was busy as expected and I was standing right in front of the register waiting to be greeted and put on a waiting list. I waited for 15 minutes and I didn't even get an acknowledgment from the staff. I used to be a server and I understand things get overwhelming but it only takes a second to greet a guest and let them know someone will be with them soon. I felt like a ghost and looking around the room I wondered if my ethnicity was why I was ignored. Horrible first impression and I won't return. I was struggling better the steak sandwich, Bacon Melt, or Mini Chiliburger. I ordered the steak sandwich (I can't recall the name on the menu) with fries. Asked for Tapatio and Grilled Onions. My husband ordered the Western Bacon Cheeseburger with fries. The steak sandwich was perfect! Steak was tender and juicy. I added mayo to the bun, S&P, and Tapatio to the bun. Added the lettuce, tomato to the bun. Perfection. Steak is cooked to order. I ordered mine Medium. Western Bacon Cheeseburger: soft bun, great sweet n tangy BBQ sauce, crisp bacon, perfect onion rings. The hamburger patty had a perfect char and seasoned well. My husband inhaled it in minutes! Can't believe ai just paid $27 for a sub-par breakfast burrito. Came in this morning and the waitress reluctantly (for some reason) sat me at the bar upon my request. I ordered the burrito with steak, which, in all honesty, was fairly sloppy/greasy, with low quality ingredients (especially the steak). I had to ask her for clarification on the bill - she confirmed without hesitation: $26.85 "steak is expensive. I didn't even charge you full price." Well, thanks for the heads up! We came here about 9:30am on a Sunday wanting to beat the rush. We read on Yelp that it can get very busy. After arriving we are surprised it can get that busy based on their limited parking. We were seated right away and there were still other tables open but that was after driving around the place twice trying to find a place to park. There was no designated parking anywhere and vehicles were parked every which way including several of which were parked in. We found it more difficult to park than to get a table. The outside of the building appears very run down and the inside is much more put together. We could see that in addition to the inside seating, they also have some outside seating as well. We were provided menus and ordered drinks. We perused the menu which is about half breakfast items with salads, burgers and sandwiches. They are supposed to be famous for their burgers. A short while later our orders were taken. My wife chose the farmers omelette with home fries and I chose the western bacon burger with hash browns since they were not yet offering French fries for the day. Our food came out very quickly and looked delicious. My wife said her omelette was very good and so were her home fries. My burger was good but wasn't spectacular and I wish I had ordered the home fries after tasting my wife's. We also noticed that the server appeared to be serving the entire dining room and several of us were waiting for boxes and our checks. My wife's meal was a 5 but mine was a solid 3 so we are giving it a 4. read more
