I have only emailed with Nigel Borel. He was prompt in getting back to me. While reading the negative reviews here, a few things come to mind: -Some people complain about seeing apartments that they found out were "already rented." It is possible -- and I am just guessing -- that the apartment they saw was in the process of being rented, but that all of the money did not yet come through, so the apartment was still being presented to potential renters to ensure that someone would take it. -Someone else, who claims to have good credit and income, who wanted an apartment, mentioned that they had a small child/baby. While it is not legal for landlords to discriminate against tenants who have children, some landlords try to avoid renting to people with small kids. Again, I am just guessing. -About former tenants still having keys and making the apartment inaccessible. Happens all the time. -About apartments' management companies having rude employees. Hate to say it as a New Yorker, but this is New York City and I can list at least two other management companies that suck with customer service, but are still legal enough to get by. My one interaction with Nigel Borel was quick and did not waste any of my time. I am not writing this to defend him, just want to throw some perspective in this black-and-white sea of very negative and very positive reviews. read more

Nigel Borel at Moss Realty is one of the best brokers in the city.   He was our broker when we moved to NYC AND we hired him to help us to rent out our place during an impossible market.   What we like about Nigel is that he works hard, he keeps you well informed, and he does his job with integrity.    Our family needed to move in the middle of the pandemic during a difficult economic situation and we needed to rent our apartment to be able to break a lease.  So we were in the unique situation to see a broker work from the perspective of someone seeking to rent an apartment when we moved to NYC, then as someone seeking to lease the apartment to a new tenant when we needed to leave the city. Nigel was an honest hardworking broker for all parties in both transactions.  He simply works hard for you and tells you the reality of what you are getting with the rental property, then he processes paperwork as fast as apartment managers allow.  And his fee was very reasonable. If you're considering Moss Realty in NYC, perhaps I can help you with your decision by informing you on what happened with me. On Friday October 16th I came across an ad on Craigslist for a rent stabilized apartment in Harlem. I had met the income and credit qualifications we proceeded. On Wednesday October 21st I looked at the available apartment with Nigel Borel. It was still in the process of being cleaned up from the previous tenant, but it was everything I wanted and needed. I have been on very limited time where I resided and was supposed to have been out already. He has been very aware of my time frame the entire time. He told me it should be available by the following Wednesday. In the meantime I filled out the application and got any and all necessary paperwork together within a day or two and paid the $75 application fee. On Wednesday October 28th, he called and congratulated me because I had been approved. All I needed to do was put the deposit in their account to secure it to me and take it off the market. I did so within a few hours. Over the next week and a half, when I would ask for updates when I could sign the lease and move he was dragging his feet and would only tell me that the management company or owner wasn't available. I started to become concerned, clearly. On Monday November 9th he asked me to call him. He had informed me that the apartment was given to someone else. Baffled because my deposit is supposed to secure it to me. I was couting on it and he knew. I was incredibly upset for a good reason. Nigel assured me he had another apartment to get me into where the tenant wasn't moving out until the next week. I didn't want that apartment, a studio with 437 noise complaints, but it was in my price and at that point there was nothing else I could do. When I tried to get an understanding how this can happen all Nigel would tell me is that he understands. Never gave me anymore information. Due to this, on November 10th, I called the management company hoping to get some answers and to see if it was even legit anymore. I don't remember the name of the nasty woman I spoke with but she told me the apartment I was inquiring about was rented out a long time ago. Ok. So I kept pushing for more information because things didn't add up. She said they never even saw paperwork on me. I never did tell her my name. She kept telling me to talk to the broker. I explained I'm not getting answers when I was promised this apartment. She very rudely said, "Oh my God, don't you speak English?! Talk to your broker!", in her broken accent. After I hung up with the awful person representing their management, I called Nigel. He already knew I called them and seemed furious and short with me as if he even has a right after screwing me over, stringing me along, lying and clearly breaking our contract and the law. During our last phone conversation he mentioned caring about his reputation. I believe if you want to keep that good reputation, you not only keep your word but hold yourself accountable and follow through. He told me he doesn't have time for a person who thinks he's scamming them. I don't know what he was trying to pull, however, some type of fraud is how it appears whether is be bait n' switch or plain old stealing. He's upset cause he didn't get away with it and expected me to be a naive Midwesterner. Fortunately a few days after that conversation he had the deposit put back into my account. I never did get the application fee back. Even after all that, I still gave him the chance to make it right by getting me into that studio but he began with the lies and stringing me along yet again and replying with short vague answers. I gave up and it's been over a month since Nigel has contacted me. I hope sharing my experience saves someone from the headache, time and money lost by avoiding Moss Realty. read more

I contacted Nigel in December of 2014 inquiring about a 2 bedroom apartment that he posted on Craigslist. I completed all the paper work and paid a $75 background credit check. He went from telling me he don't know what's the hold up, to there is another applicant being considered for the apartment but not to worry, to check out another apartment that was posted for about $250 more, to some one else was transferred from another apartment to the one I was looking at. I believe Moss Reality is a ripoff! read more

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! Very shady and awful people. I am not even sure what they do is legal. Their broker NIGEL BOREL showed us an apartment in AUGUST, we applied for this apartment and after few days he congratulated us saying we were approved. she took application fee+deposit+ his brokers fee and assured us, that lease would be signed very soon. after several weeks calling and asking, he would always make an excuse and in the end not even pick up our calls, he would lie that management was very busy and we should be patient. So finally we went to the office and there was a very rude woman almost chasing us out. Me and my husband were with our one year old child! She said we have to ask our broker. I started calling him again and he wold hung up on me. Finally, after 2 months of lying and wasting out time, he told us, that management did not like us and apartment was rented to someone else!!! BTW, we had an excellent credit score and enough income to be qualified. He returned all the money we had payed him in October. read more
