Great food and service! An unexpected visit as our first choice was closed. It's more than just boba! We were looking for something quick fast and delicious for dinner prior to our concert that evening and motea plus hit the spot. We each had boba and ramen or a rice dish. Everything was delicious. Chicken kagage and ramen were on point. Next time I'm in the area I will have to try another new item.

I brought my daughter here as she loves smoothies with boba. It was busy, but the guys working moved very fast. They have a huge menu of teas and smoothies. My daughter ordered the strawberry smoothie with mango popping, and i ordered a mocha frappuccino with tapioca. They were both delicious, not too sweet, and were reasonably priced. The inside is cute and inviting with plants on every table. Great place for an afternoon treat!

Super clean inside with a large selection of drinks. The cashier was helpful and made my drink exactly the way I asked for it. Will return!

Saw that this place was finally opened so my husband and I decided to try it out! I'm a big fan of Taiwanese tea shops as it's what I frequented when I lived in Southern California and to see one open up was a treat! First the teas. I've ordered the house bubble tea and the Thai tea. Both were reminiscent of many Thai shops I've been to and just as delicious! Next the appetizer. First time we came here we just got the Taiwanese crispy chicken which I've always known it as popcorn chicken. Lots of flavor and a good crunch! My only recommendation is to please serve it with sweet and sour sauce. That sauce always goes great with the chicken. Next is the rice bowl. My husband got the original beef bowl which we know it as gyudon. I tried a little of it and beef had lots of flavor. I got the Combo Luxury #2 which came with teriyaki chicken and Tempura shrimp. It was was I expected but some chicken pieces were a little dry. Flavor overall was great! Lastly, the rolled ice cream. We saw a lot of people come and go while we were eating dinner and noticed this was the menu item most people went for. I got the green tea rolled ice cream and my husband got the strawnana rolled ice cream. A great tasty dessert to end the day! I highly recommend this place and we will definitely be back to try other things!

Placed an online order today and had to wait over 35 minutes (they also initially got the order wrong). Each time I have placed an online order there has been extended wait times but it has been increasingly worsened. Tea is tasty, but having to wait so long is no fun. Will not return.

Great service, such a nice cute little shop! My go to is the strawberry taro milk tea with tapioca and it never failed to disappoint.

I ordered online for carry out and the platform was easy to navigate. Once my husband and I arrived at the resto we were greeted by a very kind staff member. Our food wasn't ready but within 5 mins of us being there it was good to go. We tried the wonton soup and chicken dumplings app. Both were on the bland side. Normally I'm used to wonton soup also having noodles and theirs does not. Flavors were OK, felt like both dishes were missing spices. Everything was cooked perfectly though. Maybe we ordered the wrong items from here and need to try others instead.

In my experience, this signifies either the place was going to be a shithole to pass up, or it was a serious place to eat, then get out and go somewhere with an atmosphere. Happy to say J's (IMHO) is a serious place to eat. No-nonsense, direct and to the point. When I walked in, all those common chairs I mentioned were stacked upside down on the tables in the way that places do when they are closed. The taciturn fellow who worked there assured me they were indeed open, and explained they had just finish washing the floor. Please dont read any of this as negative-the best Chinese places I've ever been have looked like this-and if you've paid attention to the Travel/Food shows on the TeeVee, the joints in China itself are pretty much the same. On to the food, know this place is a Serious REAL-DEAL Chinese resto. I didn't notice if there were "Occidental" Chinese-type dishes on the carte, (primarily 'cos I wasn't looking for them). What I saw looked yum, and had a hard time making choices, even though I had read the menu multiple times and thought I know what I was going to order in advance. Confessionately, this is a chief feature for my tortured dining self-It's a wonder I even get fed in restaurants (especially the great ethnic ones), due to option anxiety. I zeroed in on "Street Noodles" for starters-wouldn't you? Then went to "Cold Beef Shank" for entreé. The Noodles were fab as was the Shank. The noodles were in a broth. with some hunks of bok choy and ground meat on top. Hearty, still light. The shank had a thin sauce complimenting but not obscuring the beefiness. One bugaboo: the Shank needed a bit of seasoning, and I wasn't going to use soy sauce, as I believed that would have marred the subtle flavors of the Beef. I asked for a salt shaker. It arrived, and I was a little taken back, 'cos it appeared it hadn't been washed in a while, and the salt inside was caked. It occurred to me this condition was present due to the non-use of said shaker. I don't think I've ever asked for a salt shaker in a Chinese resto. I pulled a toothpick out of my "Murse" and broke up the caked NaCl. Applying same to the pieces of Shank, the flavor bloomed and I was a happy boy. Bring some salt packets along when you visit "J's", maybe. The fellow who was waiter and cashier was a "western" fellow, whom I engaged and turned out to be quite an experienced foodie. some pleasant conversation indeed. Throwing 4 for this excellent establishment, with a few grains of salt separating it from 5...

There aren't many seats available so it feels like a semi boba shop as well. To sum it up, I would say it is ~70 to 80% authentic, which is not bad in my opinion. Braised Pork Over Rice 招牌滷肉飯: The presentation was beautiful and the flavor was actually pretty good. In Taiwan, this dish is usually more on the sweeter side, due to the sugar and shallots added. Here, it is more peppery and savory, and the flavor was actually really good. The beans and the mustard greens were very delicious as well. Even though the flavor profile is slightly different, this was well made and something I would come back for. Noodles with black pepper sauce 胡椒鐵板麵: traditionally this dish is called蘑菇鐵板麵, which uses mushrooms, black pepper and other sauces as a base. The flavor was good, but I wish that there were more mushroom and sauce to balance the black pepper. In my opinion, this dish tasted very different from what I used to eat, but it is not bad on its own. 2/4 Fried pork chops: the meat was fried very well, and it was pretty peppery and crispy. However, I think there are different spices and flavor missing, including white pepper, msg, garlic, Thai basil, cayenne pepper, and more. I wished that the savoriness and spiciness popped up more, and I thought the spice blend and the marinade could definitely use some improvement. 3/4 Beef noodle soup 牛肉麵: I thought the bone broth was pretty good, but I believe the flavor profile should be wider, like tomatoes, five spice, 豆瓣醬, soy sauce, and more. It was a stripped down version, and I wished that is reflected in the name of the item (renaming it "clear soup" etc). Also, the amount of meat they gave us was a little bit pitiful (there were like four pieces), and there were two pieces of bok choy. When Taiwanese people eat beef noodle soup, we definitely expect more. 2/4 Additionally, I wish the drinks were made with some fresh ingredients (not just syrup or creamer), as standard/good quality boba shops from Taiwan try to make drinks as fresh as possible. That is high ask, but I just wanted to note that as a suggestion for improvement. Overall, I thought the food was pretty decent. Would I say it is the most representative Taiwanese restaurant in Chicago? No. The staff was actually Chinese loll. But I do think it reminds me of some flavors and food I grew up eating in Taiwan. If you like popcorn chicken and pork, it is likely a good place for you.
