After the exodus from desolation and the uncomfortably empty Billy Goat Tavern, a trip to a more bustling venue outside of Wrigleyville was in order. Parking around Mother Hubbard's was a bit tricky as downtown weekend day parking generally is. Walking in, TVs greeted me and I sat down and was mesmerized by the large projector TV. I ordered a Bud Light and rode the emotional rollercoaster of the Cubs Sox game. The server came by and was trying to be chatty and gave us a baseball trivia fill in the blank game to play with while the game still went on. Distracted, I definitely missed a few at bats while trying to figure out clues such as Kickapoo (Indians) and what does not go with tuxedos (White Sox). The game audio was loud, but the TV's volume somehow went up a notch every time the game went to commercial. The chicken wings were still as good as memory served and were jumbo wings with hot buffalo sauce on them. In the corner, a giant life-sized cutout of Barry Bonds adorned the wall, a relic from the final moments of the rampant steroid era, a White Sox championship imitation banner hung over the ceiling as well as banners for Bears, Cubs, and various teams sort of sapping away the bar's identity. All in all an average bar, not too rowdy but certainly still kicking with some degree of clapping on the big plays. I would have to suggest changing their downtown price of $5.50 Bud Lights, that is just a bit outrageous for this Northwestsider. read more

In Chicago visiting and was looking for a bar and this bar was one of the few that was open. Firstly, make sure you bring your ID, because my 50 plus year old mother could not enter until she provided her ID, no if, ands or buts. Had a lemon drop martini(very basic) and a grilled cheese that was deelish, you can add up to three different types of cheeses to your grilled cheese. It also came with your choice of soup, a small side( pickle or onion) and a side a fries. Sounds like a lot right! It's a lot for your buck! Kind of a bad night to get the feel of the vibe since it's a holiday and not a lot of people are out tonight but it's seems cool, there's music but just for listening. Wow I didn't think a sports bar would be packed along a strip of bars and clubs but here it is! It's not an amazing sports bar by any stretch of the imagination but it has everything that you'd expect from a sports bar. Lots of beer, lots of greasy food and friendly staff. Came in twice while in biz in Chicago. Lots of screens and fairly priced drinks. Staff was very nice as I had a fractured leg and they helped me get a table even though I was solo. So why the 3 Star rating... Well, the wings. They were ok. The problem was that they had the drummy and straight part connected. Check out other people's pics. I have had many wings l over the country and never saw this. It's gross and tough to eat. You have have to rip apart the pointy portion from the drumstick and straight part of the wing. This joint has been around for decades on Hubbard and is one of last standing Old School bars in the ever changing River North area. This place may be the definition of a "Sports Bar" but something about it makes it a great bar! You see folks... it's really run right and they don't try to gouge you on the prices because of the area, a rare commodity these days. Inside, there's a large bar surrounded by tables.. TV's EVERYWHERE, like 50 of 'em! Two runs of tap handles & they have like 30 brews on draft served ice cold with a smile. No major issues with this place, the bartender was nice and attentive. My two stars is cuz they "lost my debit card" behind the bar lol. It was rather late at night for food and my aunt and I tried to go to another restaurant at 12:15 to get something to eat, only to have the rope drawn right as we were about to go inside claiming they were closed, and when I mentioned I thought they closed at 1, the man said that everyone needed to be seated by 12:15, so we left, still hungry. We considered just going back to our hotel which has a miserable excuse for a snack bar, and grill that was already closed. We passed Mother Hubbard's on the way back, and although rather busy inside, we asked if the kitchen was still open, and the gentleman that appeared to be the head bouncer said it was, but that they would take care of us and to head inside where it was very loud and pretty full of people. We found a server who brought up a QR code to scan for the menu and we placed a carry out order with her and paid on the spot and she told us to stay put, so of course we did, just waiting patiently enjoying the people watching. I was not expecting any further contact as we aren't exactly the target demographic of this place, but did see a man who was clearly a manager making the rounds and shmoozing with patrons, and didn't expect him to even say anything to us, but he did notice we'd been standing out of the way for a bit (not nearly long enough to worry that our food was taking too long as I'm in the industry and know how long it takes to cook a burger) and he came over to check on us, and sent a bus boy to go check on the order, and then offered us a free drink while we waited, even though the food was on the way out before the bartender had even poured my beer that he insisted I get! He walked us out and thanked us for our business and it was just such a delightful personal touch that I just was not expecting in the slightest. Decent sports bar with meh food/drinks. Our Order: two Sam Adams Octoberfest and a basket of fries. Environment: sports bar with three areas (bar area, pool table area, and group seating area). The service was just average. Verdict: I love a good dive and/or sports bar, but I would like my beer to be cold and my fries to be cooked. Our Octoberfest were mildly cold, but got warm fast and our fries weren't even deep fried, they seemed very limp and oily. How They Get More Stars?: serve the beer in a chilled glass or lower the temperature on the storage so it comes out more refreshing. Make sure the fries come out golden brown, not half cooked. "HEY BLACKS, BUY MORE OR GET OUT" While at Mother Hubbard's on the evening of St Patrick's Day, the on duty supervisor (Matt, male Hispanic, long black hair, black and white checkered shirt) politely informed my friend and I that if we weren't going to purchase beverages we would have to leave the establishment. We told him that we had already purchased drinks, and that we didn't intend on drinking anymore that evening. He insisted that we had to leave if weren't going to purchase anything. We asked him why he was targeting us. He told us that he would be asking others without drinks to leave as well. After he escorted us out we waited outside for about 5 minutes to see if anyone else would be escorted out. Allow me to mention that the bar was no where close to being full capacity. Our description is as follows: Me: Male Black 49 yrs 6'2' My friend: Male Black 49 yrs 6'5" My friend and I decided not to call it a night, so we went back in. My friend purchased our drinks, and conducted an investigation on Matt. While walking around the room Matt approached us and politely welcomed us back. I followed him and strategically positioned myself in the room to see if Matt asked other people without drinks to purchase drinks, or to leave. I saw Matt walk by dozens of people without drinks with the exception of 3 people who were standing together... Description: 1 female Black 20s, 2 male Blacks 20s I approached them to confirm my suspicion of Matt profiling Blacks, and to my disappointment I was right. He had also told them they had to purchase drinks as well. So what's up with Mother Hubbard's (or Matt) mandating that Black people make continuous purchases in order to be in the establishment? Is this a modernized version of Jim Crow? I am an 18 year veteran with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. I am assigned as a Detective (6 years). My friend is a corporate executive with Pepsi Corp. We don't fit the thug profile. As a cop I am VERY familiar with and sensitive to unfounded accusations of racism. With that said, I am extremely suspicious about what took place Sunday morning. I don't know if it's an unwritten policy to minimize the number of Black people in Mother Hubbard's, or if it's an issue that Matt has with Black people. I do know this, someone needs to make sure that this type of thing doesn't happen again. Otherwise they will be looking at a very costly lawsuit in the future. read more

It is a Midwestern oasis in the middle of River North's busiest street of bars. It's never overly packed, no one bothers you, and you can watch games of that's your thing. Oh, and surprisingly they have pretty darn good food. Also, they have pool tables. Other that O'Callahans and Hernys, I don't know who else does in that area anymore. This place was an adventure for a suburbanite like myself. It was nestled quite nicely just a block off of Michigan Ave, near lots of other bars/restaurants. The night we went, it was PACKED. Like claustrophobically so. I think every person in Chicago between the ages of 33-43 was in that bar. The service was INCREDIBLY slow (no surprise), but the prices were fair. Anyway, it was a pleasant surprise that there was a place that was serving food and drinks and open late with enough room for 10 guys to sit down on a Saturday night. The service was quick and fantastic. We were sat right away and were all able to easily sit together around 11PM. The waitstaff was friendly and quick to bring out drinks and food and took our order shortly after we were ready. The drink prices were actually very reasonable for a Saturday night in an expensive part of town and there was a decent amount of choices. The food was typical bar food. Nothing spectacular but not bad food. I had the Chicken sandwich with teriyaki sauce and it was alright. The bun was a little dry. The fries it came with were pretty awful. They reminded me of middle school french fries but not the crinkle cut ones. I also had some onion rings and they were actually really good. Just the right amount of crunch. Had such a great time at Mother Hubbard's on St. Patrick's day. This bar had a perfect set up. There was the main bar area plus two other mini bars with their own hostesses, so you never had to wait to order a drink. Plus, the waitresses kept coming around to ask if you wanted anything, so there wasn't even a need to wait in line. The DJ was playing great tunes (pretty diverse so everyone could enjoy it) and there was plenty of room to dance. Only downside is that the bathroom is tiny and there was always a big line for that. Lo and behold, Mother Hubbard's a block down. Since it was getting cold and we were tired from walking around all day, we walked into this great sports pub. How can you NOT go wrong with a $15.50 pitcher of New Castle and FREE jumbo chicken wings?! You cannot!!!! The pitcher was the perfect amount for the five of us and their chicken wings were good. Albiet, they tasted like regular hot chicken wings, they hit the spot. Our waitress was really nice and it was a cool place to kill time. They had some arcade games and $2 game of pool. Cool! A different kinda sports bar with two large glass souvenier cases of empty beer cans lined the wall by the pool table and lots of screens for different games of the day. They have a pretty good beer list here and tons of pool tables , its centrally located next to all the hotels if you're visiting and they were pretty cool with a bunch of chargers making this our home base. I thought this joint was pretty cool and the bartenders cooler, but then I tried the wings.. Been coming into this bar with my husband for a few years now when we're in town. We heard this bar is under new ownership and must say It's great to finally see this bar come to life with lively smiles. My husband and I, were in there yesterday for the game and had a wonderful bartender named Rebecca. She was energetic, personable and she always on top of our drinks when they were low. She made us feel welcomed and had a heart warming smile the entire time she served us. We look forward to coming back in town and coming here again.
