Service was lacking. Long periods waiting for our server. Long. Wanted one more drink before calling it a night and it was like she totally disappeared. Had to ask two other servers regarding her whereabouts. At this point just wanted to cash out and get my credit card back. When she finally appeared, was somewhat rude and said she had been doing shots. Great but what about your tables??? When asked for my credit card, she whipped it out from her bra!!! Noting that I didn't meet the manager that is mentioned...we had a great time at Mother Hubbards! A great view of the many games, most in HD, unlike many bars where only the homer games are shown. We enjoyed it so much that in addition to Happy Hour on Saturday, we came back for a night cap on Sunday, because this is a reliable joint in the center of the city as the surrounding neighborhood goes trendy. Stumbled, literally, upon this place as soon as we set out for our first adventure in Chicago. My husband and I had just dropped our luggage and set out to grab a couple drinks and find a place where we could watch an upcoming boxing match a couple days later into our stay. Tried the door and it was locked, because we obviously couldn't read that it wasn't even open yet. There was a gentleman inside on the phone and as we were walking away he signaled for us to hold on. He came over and let us in. He was conducting business on the phone and we felt like jerks to interrupt so politely said thanks for opening but we didn't want to get in his way. He said "absolutely not, take a seat at the bar" a few minutes later he hung up and asked us what we needed - from that...a three hour visit to Mother Hubbard's began. Frankie, the gentleman, engaged us with great conversation on what to do, what we were going to do and his recommendation on what he thought we should do instead. Really got to know us, give us some great tips and we also got to know him as well. He offered us drinks, gave us his number and told us to give him a buzz if there was anything we needed while in town. My husband went back maybe 2 more times through our trip in support of our new pal and we took him up on a couple of his recommendations. Although he couldn't help us with out initial question of where to watch the upcoming boxing match, he hooked us up with the folks next door at Theory. I can't speak for the food, but the drinks were right and nicely priced, tons of TV screens (the most in any bar in the city, I believe) and great staff. The hospitality we received from Frankie, then the bartender on shift was something we'll remember from this trip. If we're ever back in Chicago, Mother Hubbard's is where it's at. read more

Also pool tables, etc. Wings were exceptionally good. Prepared just as requested....fried hard and drenched in buffalo sauce. Nachos were crrrrrazy big. Though kinda had a funny taste that I still can't put my finger on. Ordered hot toddy (strong) and a glass of Cabernet with ice water. Hot Toddy was crazzzzzy strong and Cab was cool. Don't judge a book by it's cover. And don't judge a bar by its awning/curb appeal. My pals and I wandered in to Mother Hubbards never having been there and were pleasantly surprised. The bar was bumping around 3pm on a Saturday. There are two pool tables. One table was covered with a cloth and the other was ours to play. There are quarter machines throughout the bar so you dont have to bug the bartenders for change to play (like I did LOL). I like the age of the crowd here. Not my type of place. Customer service made me feel like being back in Europe and that's not meant in a good way. Even though the place was busy because we came here on late Friday night and stayed until 3:30 AM, it was not packed enough that we would have to wait for making drink order 15 minutes and then another 10 minutes for getting drinks and not even getting what we ordered ... also, the waitress didn't have any knowledge about the beers on tap and was not helpful at all. I used to work as a waitress too, so I tend to be extra sensitive when someone is not doing what they are paid for. My reasoning here is that waitresses that don't like people and crowds or helping customers should choose different career if this doesn't fulfill them. After our whole group was done with first round of drinks, we had to ask the waitress twice for the second round and sadly still were ignored and ended up ordering with a waitress from different section. The beer selection itself was really good and this place is also good for bar food/late night dinner but again. If I'm paying someone to wait on my table and I'm also supposed to tip that person, I want them to their job... hopefully I'm not asking for too much. read more

We arrived when they first opened in the evening, probably caught the staff off guard, as nothing was ready or setup except the bar. The bar tender was courteous and took our order. Burger was ok, but the cook forgot the cheese. The wait staff was almost nonexistent as we had to go back to the bar to get refills. Ambiance is atypical for a bar. I remember years ago this was a place to go. If you go, perhaps wait an hour after they open, maybe the wait staff will be more alert, or sit at the bar if there's room, that way the bar tender can take care of your order. The food was incredibly mediocre. The service was not great, either. I ordered the nachos and was told sour cream came on it. I asked for it on the side. I also got a lemonade and had a few refills. The check comes, and I was charged an extra $1.50 for the sour cream (even though it wasn't extra???) and an additional $2.00 per refill of lemonade (of which I had three cups). At NO point did the waitress mention anything about additional charges!!!! I was incredibly shocked when my bill came and it was nearly $10 higher than I anticipated! Not to mention, we were there on a Wednesday night and it took a full 20 minutes between us asking for the bill and the bill actually arriving at our table. There's no shortage of bars along Hubbard St and Mother Hub's is pretty solid and popular for watching the game regardless your group size. Their website even gives the names of some of the jocks that do come in. On my last visit- we ran into some women visiting from Wisconsin. You would have thought we were long lost kin when I told them I had lived there once. Beers are cold (although a little pricey), the bartenders are quick to notice you (no small feat given how crowded this place gets) and if you are there to watch a game- there are plenty of TV's. My favorite thing is always, the music. Every time I have been to this place- it's 80's all the time. Don't know who is playing the tunes (DJ? jukebox?) but keep it up. Good old Mother Hubbards. I actually kinda like this place. I don't live anywhere near it and probably would never come if not for the fact that when I have colleagues in town they stay across the street at the Marriott and it's the most convenient place for us to meet. Beer is always cold, food is good (according to the people I was with -- I didn't have any as I had already eaten a big dinner), and the staff is very friendly. The bathrooms leave a bit to be desired but they're not horrible. Sports are always on the TVs and it seems no matter where you sit in the joint you always have a good view of at least 1 TV. This is just an awesome place. It doesn't have stellar service, it's not a particularly exceptional bar as far as decor, it's a classic sports bar. The food is really good bar food, not creative, but just basic great bar food. So why is this place so awesome? This is one of the places that is extremely, extremely rare. It just draws a great crowd, all the time. It's the mix of clientele, employees, bar menu, and location (on busy Hubbard St.) that makes it a really, truly exceptional neighborhood sports bar. Without getting too existential, it seems like the place pulls people of all sorts of professions, backgrounds, economic classes in, and just makes it all work together. Some tables have well dressed sequined women in long dresses and men with men in nice suits and Hermes ties, some in fashion jeans and tight tops, and some in baggy stone-washed jeans that have been out of style for years. But when everyone is in there, everyone mingles and it makes for the perfect bar atmosphere. No pretention here. Lots of people talking, others laughing, some watching a game on one of the large TV screens. It's a fun place and one feels really comfortable striking up a conversation with anyone in there. Incidentally, their ribs are really, really fantastic. Off the bone short ribs with a very basic, sweet barbecue sauce, but it's the simplicity of it all. Their wings are well-known, and the burgers and nachos are exceptional for being so "average." This is the place to come for a fun evening, or to end your evening when you're blasted and have the munchies. Can't say enough about this place...which is odd for me because I'm not a barfly, but it reminds me of a great line James Joyce once said about the Catholic Church which he described as "here comes everybody." That aptly describes Mother Hubbard's. Forget the pretentious bars on Hubbard where attitude fills the room. I seem to be able to find the best dive bars known to man & this one fits in on my list. Located in downtown Chicago, it's 3 blocks from the river and has everything you need for a epic dive bar experience. As I walked in, I noticed a full bar top of regulars and neighborhood people chatting it up. There are plenty of Tv's for the games and sports highlights. There's also a couple pool tables in the back and a good size seating area full of tables. The best dive bars aren't fancy or foo foo. The best dive bars are just ambassadors of good times and Mother Hubbard's is a that! The crowd was diverse, blended and mixed. No one noticed that I wasn't a local, however I had as much fun as the guy who was there 3 times this week. Mother Hubbard's has a food menu and they serve food late. I wasn't planning to eat wings, but I couldn't resist. These are some of the better dive bar wings! They are the large wings. And they were good. Bottom line is.. It definitely attracts more of an older clientele which was a welcoming change after having gone to so many bars in DC filled with douchy "young professionals" (myself included to be completely fair).
