I bought a guitar here August 30, 2024, and after a loose guitar output jack and a wobbly one at that, I decided to trade in the guitar and buy another one. All in all, they gave me about half (1/2) of what I paid for the flawed guitar and took that off the price off a guitar that was on sale. The new guitar is great (thus far), but I am very disappointed that I basically "rented" this guitar from them for 50% of the original cost for the last three months. Marty is a great guy, but I think I will buy locally from now on. Or, I'd rather use Sweetwater. My interest is guitars and not only do they have a huge selection of guitars but they also have perhaps the largest effects pedal collection in Michigan. Simply put, Marty is wonderful. I didn't realize; but my dad was a customer of his and Marty recognized his name immediately. I shared the news of his passing as I was there to sell some of his guitars. Not only did he show compassion, he shared personal stories of other people who'd recently lost their father.. and I didn't feel so alone. He just so happened to have this guitar pick of which he gifted me. It's people like him that make the toughest situations easier. Came here for the first time in a while (I live in Chicago). I forgot how amazing this place is. They have guitars of damn near every brand and every price range. Seen a lot of shops in my travels and nothing comes close to this place. Most other shops cater too much to high-end guitars or they focus mostly on Gibson and Fender. There is seriously a guitar (or 5) for every type of player in here. If you live within an hour's drive of Waterford-MI, there's simply no reason to go anywhere else for a serious purchase. I really really want to love this place. After all, it's a music shop near me. Next closest is Southfield's Guitar Center. But these guys have to remodel the entrance. I have been wanting to take guitar lessons for a little while now and the Universe was generous enough to let me score a free acoustic w/ case via a super nice client of mine. After getting zero response to a detailed voicemail I left for Milford Music to get additional info on their lessons, I decided to seek out other avenues. So far I have made 2 trips to Motor City guitar to inquire about lessons and to purchase a tuner. Both times I have been pleasantly accommodated. The building is big and has an abundance of musical instruments to choose from, both used and new. I saw a Gothic Gibson Les Paul I would LOVE to have. *Fingers crossed* The entrance is definitely picture-worthy with 2 huge Gibson guitar replicas crossing necks over the front door. On my first trip I took a look around the place and encountered a number of people playing the equipment. I found out guitar lessons were up for purchase in blocks of 4 at $15 a pop (total $60). Each lesson is 1/2 an hour. Much cheaper than Milford Music who, at $23 per 1/2 hour lesson, is apparently too good and awash in riches to return phone calls for new business. Lessons at MCG are typically available afternoons and evenings. I received my guitar pretty much tuned and my son twisted the knobs (whatever they are called) up top and messed up the sound. Seeing that this could be a regular occurrence, my second trip to purchase a guitar tuner was quite successful. I asked the long-haired older gentleman manning the counter for a unit that would be appropriate for the musically retarded (i.e., me). He pulled a $20 digital Snark tuner out of a display case filled with a myriad of tuners. He took the time to set it up out of the box, show me the operation and fully tuned my guitar with it. I am going to try my hand with YouTube tutorials to get more familiar with the uber basics of technique, etc. before I book my lessons so I don't go in there totally green. I want maximize my 1/2 hour/$15 bucks worth. I'm really looking forward to some 1-on-1's with a Motor City Guitar instructor though. So itching for it. Just about as cool as a guitar store can be. Marty's converted movie theater is packed full of guitar, drum and some PA goodies. And when i say packed, I mean PACKED! The place is a total mess. Amps, boxes, guitars piled up all over the place like the store is in a state of perpetual rearranging. Gear wise, MCG has some of the best guitars and amps anywhere! Not just here in SE Michigan, I mean anywhere. A lot of the stuff you find here is not going to found at your local CG (Nash, ENGL, Divided by 13, Dr Z, Budda, and the biggest selection of boutique pedals you can imagine). You'd have to visit at least two other states to find what they have here in this once movie theater in Waterford. The staff is very friendly and they treat customers with respect. They are also very knowledgeable about the gear. (Hey! There's a crazy concept) and can make good recommendations and answer tough questions.. It is a very musician friendly music store. Prices are fair and they're willing to get pretty creative with trade ins too. I go there at least once a week (it's a hike for me but it's worth it) to see what's new, and just to hang out with really good people. If you're ok with the place being laid out like a giant basement full of great gear that's always just about to be rearranged, you'll find your new home for guitars and amps. read more

The selection is fantastic, the prices are unbeatable - they match anything, including musiciansfriend and zzounds - and they also have a great selection of used gear (which they give occasionally ridiculous prices on). The owner, Marty, is very hands on and is almost always in the front of the store willing to help anyone. None of his employees work on commission, and all of them are specialized in the department they head up - they're very knowledgeable and willing to help out anyone from a beginner getting their first guitar to a seasoned veteran looking to get his umpteenth guitar or compare a dozen fuzz pedals looking for that certain sound. Don't let the name fool you. This is not just a guitar store but they have an abundance of musical instruments and accessories. From the outside the store does not look like it is very big. When you walk in the door, the design of the building makes the store appear to be small. If you walk in through a hallway you will find a huge open room that is full of anything and everything. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. I would give it a perfect rating but due to the design of the interior you can wait a while before someone will notice you in the back. The design makes things look cluttered and somewhat of a maze. The prices are okay depending on what you are looking to purchase. Myself, I do not buy guitars from retail stores but have them custom made from the manufacturer. However, they do have a huge selection of guitars, basses, drum kits and misc instruments. read more

This place is definitely the Biggest Little Music Store I've been to. It's SUPER huge with a wide selection of instruments. My daughter purchased her first Fender from here yesterday. The price was VERY fair. The staff is amazing, polite, non pushy, helpful, and knowledgeable. This is probably one of the funniest stores I've visited in a long time. They seem to have everything. Even Bongos! We made an entire list of future purchases from Motor City Guitar already. Everyone was very helpful and courteous. There weren't any pushy sales people, no pretentious attitudes of any of the store employees. The selection of guitars and amps were outstanding and their prices were competitive with anyone you find online. I was hesitant to buy a guitar online especially when I never would get the chance to put it in my hands and play it. This is the perfect guitar spot in Michigan that I've visited. I'm a bass enthusiast and when I saw they had Mesa Boogie for bass, I became quite excited. Not only that, but the bass selection is incredible! Rickenbacker, Gibson (the cool kind), Musica Man, etc. I had the opportunity to play some of the nicest gear to date! The American Deluxe P Bass is probably the most versatile, most incredible bass I've played, and I would of never gotten the chance to do so if it wasn't for Motor City. They literally have everything you could ask for! Pedal selection is off the chart! Boutique style basses, guitars and amps, as well as vintage instruments are very common in this shop, as well. It may be dangerous, but they offer financing and credit for purchasing instruments. So my short term goal is to bring my credit up, get a credit card by Motor City, and slowly, but surely, go into debt. The best part is, I don't even care. Very helpful staff, very knowledgeable, and you're always surrounded by incredible musicians. So forget the days of going to guitar center and hearing metal for hours.
