Great store, I always find cassettes I like, whether it's prerecorded or blank, I miss the 120 minute tapes, however 90 or 60 minutes the material is stronger, you just have to flip it over sooner than you like, I wish they still did converting copies from records to cassette or cd. The price was quite reasonable, I guess I'll have to pay more elsewhere, what a bummer, I enjoy that everything is organized , sections labeled so you can get straight to what you want to find if it's available, great international section too, hope to be able to make it back there to see what they still have. read more

Solo Records was one of the first used media stores I've been to (this was like 15 years ago). Having recently gotten back into movies, music, and media, Solo is my go-to place. I've been doing a few trade ins here and though they don't accept every title (understandably so), their prices are quite fair. Hands down THE BEST customer service I've experienced in a resale/media shop. I make a point to stop by the store at least once a month to check out their stock. One of my favorite record stores in the area! Pros: great dollar section. They clean all their records before they put them out. Great selection overall. Prices are generally good. Really friendly staff. Adorable dog sometimes wanders the store. Huge 45 section, lots of CDs and DVDs too. The cons: no new arrivals section which means you need to browse the whole store to see all the new stuff. Also, they have a huge .25 cent selection of junk albums. I sometimes like to buy those primarily for the covers for art or display projects. But they write .25 cents in marker on the front of the cover. I have no problem with marking the outer sleeve but do it on the back! It's on Woodward with that really cramped parking. Overall though, it's a great store! Go there! read more

I loved this place back in my 80's high school days and back at the old Woodward Ave location. It really hasn't changed much. Still has all the 80's music I loved back then... and more. I took my 19 year old nephew who was searching for cassette tapes for his old Thunderbird. Solo records has oodles of them. For $1.00 each! Some are $4.00, but they have a buy 3 get one free on those. He spent $16.00 on cassette tapes alone! We must have spent an hour rummaging around. For him it was all very cool. For me, it was a trip down memory lane. Now I know what all my Police, Duran Duran and INXS vinyl albums are worth! It pays to be a hoarder. If you live in the area and are looking for a great selection of reasonably priced records, Solo is the place for you. As a heads up, this place has almost no new titles so if that's your jam, don't waste your time. Also, If you're looking for a few old Beatles titles and that kind of thing you'll definitely find them here but don't expect to find them any cheaper than anywhere else. Everything is organized wonderfully and Solo offers a nice reprieve from the Rock heavy inventory of a lot of shops with a nice selection of soul. As mentioned earlier, the prices are reasonable. If you want to drive around, you can definitely snag some of the titles here at a lower price but not by a significant amount. Also, make sure to check out the dollar bin here. I know this is weird to say (and maybe not politically correct): But it's really refreshing to go to a record store run by women. :) Both times I've been in there the hip chicks behind the desk gave a more relaxed (and less snobby) feel to the place than alot of vinyl shops I've been in. The selection is small (probably the least amount of records of any real metro-detroit record shop) but the 3 times I've been in here I've walked out with a pretty good find at a pretty good price. if you're looking for a nice vintage turntable or receiver they have a nice selection of those too at reasonable prices. Not the best place for vinyl in the area (simply because of the smaller selection), but I'll keep going back whenever I'm nearby. read more

This record store is overlooked by many people, so naturally I decided to take a chance on it. Though the pickings are thin here on CDs, the vinyl is a plenty. The jazz section was pretty decent, though they carried a lot of very common titles, the prices were very good. I bought a few records for a few bucks, can't beat that. Though I won't stop here every week like some of my favourite stores, I will stop here at least once a month to see what's in the "new arrivals." read more

This is hands-down the best store in Royal Oak. Great selection, Friendly and incredibly knowledgeable staff and excellent prices. They constantly bring in super obscure stuff priced to move. i just moved to the area so i'm exploring every record store i can find close to me. i went to solo for the first time last week. i listen to mostly alternative and grunge music so i'm not really poking through the jazz or anything. the CD section is somewhat small but i found a couple of hard-finds there that i'd been going crazy looking for elsewhere. prices are decent in the CD section. what really gets me though is the cassette collection. they have some really hard to find cassettes, and all of them are extremely well preserved. i think i'd blame this on the fact that it's not a well known place, but they have an amazing collection of cassettes. i bought $24 of cassettes here, i and i got several for free. i also picked through the bargains ($2 apiece) and found a lot in there too, even good stuff. i was very surprised. DO NOT FORGET to look at the foreign/import basket at the checkout counter. there are gems in there, absolute gems. they're the more higher priced items in the store but with great reason. i didn't see this basket until i almost left and i was floored. have to go back next week. also don't forget to look on the wall- they put some of the best stuff there. i didn't think to look. the organization is a little off in the CD section. the alphabet is screwed up because the shelf's design. but i think the best thing about solo is that the people are really nice. they are really well meaning people and they're very sweet. that's the big thing that sets them apart from the other stores in the area- i've been treated "all right" by these other stores, sometimes i ask dumb questions and they treat me like i'm dumb, which isn't good at all, but at solo, they are happy to answer my really stupid questions and they do it in the kindest way. the ladies that i saw at that shift were sweethearts. if only everyone working at all record stores could be this nice. i've had many my fair share of strange moments with record store owners, but not at solo. read more

Solo records has been around a long time and is absolutely the least knowledgeable, highest priced, over priced record store. They really have no idea what they are doing. I have been a record collector for over 30 years and when the original owner was there it was great. It's very sad what this place has become and how they treat their customers. The worse thing I can attest to is that they pay absolutely the lowest prices in town and have no clue on how to run a business, especially a record business. I'm sorry but you will never get near what your records are worth and as a record collector & buyer, Solo gives this wonderful hobby the worse possible name out there. My advice and I speak for many other collectors is do not waste your time. Look for an honest private collector and do not be in a hurry, get several appraisals before you sell. Not all records are worth a ton but when I go on a buy I always educate my possible sellers and pay a very respectful price. I give this store the worse possible score and because I have no website or store have no reason other to warn people against this one. Stay away. read more

This family-owned record shop has a decent selection in most genres. I'm mostly a jazz/R&B collector, and I was able to walk out with a nice pile of goodies on several occasions. Keep your eye on prices, however, as some records are great deals, while others are too high. If you are looking for CDs and tapes they have a nice selection of both, as well as lots of equipment on consignment. I will definitely be back again. read more

This store, at least for me, is a waste of time on the vinyl front. Most of the stuff they carry is pretty typical classic rock, jazz, and r&b. Over 90% of the stock is used vinyl, not new records. Nothing wrong with this, but when you're charging a premium for records that are basically in "dollar bin" condition (scratched, tattered covers), then I'm not going to take the bait. Since vinyl is trendy now, I see more and more stores overpricing used vinyl. I think many of the younger folks buying vinyl must not know any better, because stores like this stay in business. In addition to vinyl, the store carries used CDs. I was able to find a few old jazz discs I wanted but couldn't find a single LP in the store I'd be willing to buy. I probably won't bother with this store in the future. As a heads up, parking here is also a real PITA, because there is a store next door that utilizes large delivery vans that end up blocking you from getting out. read more

The building is a bit run down, but don't let that fool you. I have been coming here for years and have gotten to know and greatly appreciate the staff of which have become friends of mine. Prices are great and they guarantee the items to work or you can always trade it for something else, but keep your receipt! I recently had to come to the area on business from Canada and by accident I found this store. Being a vinyl fan I found a few little gems to add to my collection. You really need to spend a few good hours looking thru everything, I came away very happy with my purchaces and will in future when in the area I will make a trip to this store, keep up the good work, may vinyl die. read more

I feel bad giving a low rating, but I've gone in on 3 separate occasions and have left empty handed each time...if you know me at all, that's a rarity when it comes to record shopping. The prices seem about 50% too high. I'd prefer to support a local business, but if I can go to one of the other local shops or online and find it easily for half the price if not even less, it makes it a tough go. My other critique would be the selection. As far as music from the last 25 years or so on vinyl, there isn't much, and what they have of the stuff from the 60's 70's and 80's seems to be pretty common stuff, not a bad thing. Solo Records is without a doubt the best store of its kind. They have a large selection of albums of all types. They also have a great selection of CD's, cassettes, lots of DVD's and VHS movies, and they even have a little selection of books and some posters as well. On top of all of this they sell used stereo equipment such as turntables and speakers and lots of rock n roll shirts. In other words this store has a bit of everything in the world of music. And what makes it so much better is the owner, a lovely, sweet, woman named Lorna who is very kind, and knowledgeable and helpful. And her assistant or manager Amanda who is an equally lovely, sweet, friendly and knowledgeable woman. These woman are very willing to help always and if they don't have it they will direct you to the place that does have it. Their pricing is great and their product line is vast and varied from cds to vinyl (great $1 vinyl section) to cassettes, 45s, videos, dvds and even 8-tracks for the retro enthusiast and collector.
