I took the beginners course and it was excellent! The trainers are knowledgeable and great at explaining and demonstrating the skills. It was a stress and judgement free environment. If you needed assistance they assisted. If you didn't, they just let you be but gave tips when needed. I'm planning on doing the advanced courses once I get more experience on my bike. Took the Advanced Rider Course over the weekend (1 day on your own bike, higher speeds and the majority of the class is on the course rather than classroom) and picked up a ton of tips and advice, especially when it comes to lean angles and emergency moves coming out of a corner. I am a fairly new rider (~2 years) but a commuter and thus have about 16K miles and this was the perfect course after taking my BRC to get my license a few years ago. I can't remember the coaches name's (Kyle maybe?) but both were very knowledgeable and one of them takes a ton of pics (and has a hoot while taking them) and posts them for free on Facebook, nice little touch. Whenever I get a new bike I will definitely take this course again. If there is one thing I wish they would cover would be trail braking, they sort of tease the concept but would have liked an exercise to practice it. read more

I completed the 2-day MSF Basic RiderCourse 2 (BRC2 LW) at the Newburgh location after I realized that classes at RCC in Rockland weren't going to be offered due to Covid. I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger because I took the class with Kyle and he was awesome -- extremely knowledgable and patient. Although he is easy-going, he takes safety very seriously and will not hesitate to remove anyone who fails to follow instructions and thereby puts the other students in danger. Given the delays with snagging appointments at the DMV right now, you should definitely take the BRC2 LW course that allows you to obtain the road test waiver upon successful completion. You don't need to have your moto learner's permit, so I suggest you sign up for the earliest available class (about half the class, including myself, had no prior riding experience) and pre-schedule your DMV visit. That way, you only need to visit the DMV once with your waiver and upon passing your written test, you'll knock out both the permit and licensing requirements. I signed up for the 2 day Basic Skills Class for October 3 & 4, 2015. The classes are given at both Newburgh, NY and in Suffern at Rockland Community College (RCC). I took the class at RCC. It was raining on Saturday the 3rd so we could not do any riding of motorcycles on the training course. However, we completed all the classroom work which ended in a 25 question written test. Our instructor was Scott. The classwork is geared to passing the test. After reading and completing the e-course and the classroom work, we all passed. We returned the next day, Sunday and did the first day of the hands-on motorcycle work, this would have normally been the second day, but it rained the day before. Waiting for us were Suzuki motorcycles, 250cc's each. I guess these are the smallest bikes around and the easiest to maneuver. They supply the bikes, we have to wear boots over the ankles, long sleeve shirts, they supply the helmet if you do not have one, which I did not, and you must bring gloves. I bought a pair of motorcycle gloves on-line prior to the course. I am an older person (65), I guess it is all relative, but everyone else was quite a bit younger than me, however, and energetic and good group of guys and one female. Scott started us off rocking the bike, and getting used to the clutch, friction zone, and front brakes. There were a number of exercises to complete which we did. We had to come back on Sunday, October 11th to complete the second day. Each day of riding was 4-5 hours, with 10-15 minute breaks. Day 2 of riding was more complex......U-turns, clutching and getting into 2nd gear, getting your speed up in straight aways, using the friction zone, swerving, and going over obstacles on the road, and multiple skills for each exercise. Scott was terrific. He was calm and I felt that I was getting personal attention even though there was 6 of us the first day of riding and around 9 people on the 2nd day of riding the bikes. On the 2nd day, he had another instructor helping him. Unfortunately, I forgot his name, but he was also very knowledgable, instructional and felt that he really did "get" my situation. We practiced the skills many times before the final skill test. So now the final skill test came, it consisted of 5 skills. If you drop the bike, you automatically fail. Unfortunately, one of the participants dropped the bike on the 3rd skill while coming to a short braking stop. The rest of us passed. When it was over we went to the classroom, received our Basic Ridercourse card and off we went. This course and card is in lieu of going to the DMV and taking a road test. So with this card, drivers license, and motorcycle permit, off I went today to the DMV and received my new temporary drivers license with the Motorcycle designation added. It is also my understanding that you receive a discount on your motorcycle insurance when you have this card. The new glossy license will take about 2 weeks to get but the temporary card is good if you want to ride on your own. Some thoughts..........the class was excellent, I cannot say enough about Scott that helped us along. I don't know how he does it week in and week out with a bunch of noobies. He is patient and a great instructor. When I arrived the first day of the class at RCC, myself and another participant did not know where to go. We did not know where the classroom was until we received a call on our cellphones looking for us and telling us where to go. MTS should tell the participant in the confirming email where to report the first day. If you are a beginner or experienced rider you must take this course. As one of the instructors said to me, "riding a motorcycle is a lifelong exercise", you never stop learning. Obviously, riding a motorcycle is dangerous, the course teaches safety, avoidance and all the skills. No matter if you are experienced or a beginner, like me, take this course rather than have a friend teach you. You will come out way ahead. After completing the course, I do not feel competent enough or skillful enough to take a bike out on the street. When I get a bike, I will practice in a parking lot and probably come back and take either a private lesson or more group lessons with the instructors at MTS. I was not the worst of the bunch, nor the best, but even the person who I thought was the best, still makes basic mistakes, and he should be practicing more before taking it on the highway.
