One entrance to the trail is just 1/4 mile past the gate off of Hampstead Road. If you are walking up the fire road you will see the entrance to your right. It goes up and over one ridge You can also park near the Forest Hill Gate and go up the fire road about a half mile. You will see the trail to your left. The view from this trail is beautiful. They really need a bench or picnic table somewhere, but the LCF Trails Councils is a little archaic in the way they think. I can picture my son building a picnic table for his Boy Scout project, but this group thinks they own the park. I might try to join their little group, but I would probably get so aggravated it wouldn't be worth it. We shall see. In the meantime it might be worth it to just picnic the old fashioned way. Just watch out for snakes and Mountain Lions.

While the hike is approximately 13 miles round trip, the journey is worth the effort. Idlehour campground is nestled in a higher elevation section of Eaton Canyon, approximately 3 miles past Lower Henninger Flats. About 1 mile past the fire station at Henninger, look for a small wooden footbridge on the left of the trail and signs for Idlehour campground. This small trail off the toll road heads down into Eaton behind Henninger. While there is a lot of poison oak, the riparian flora and fauna are quite different than what one finds in lower Eaton near the white bridge. Bay trees, stinging nettle, willows, and abundant wildflowers in season color and perfume the landscape. There are a few primitive campsites here, with small wood burning stoves. Fire permits are required, and while you might get away with sleeping the night here, it's also best to make reservations. There are no restroom or trash facilities here, so plan on packing out what you pack in. Near the water, various insects, spiders, and other bugs like millipedes are abundant. California tree frogs, California newts (one of the most toxic creatures on earth!), and small fish can be found in the creek. Songbirds and raptors are occasionally seen. Large mammals like deer, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, and bears are generally in the neighborhood, so store food safely away from camp... That old Bot Scout trick of hanging it from a branch at least 10 feet off the ground works! Idlehour can also be accessed from Inspiration Point via the Idlehour trail, which begins roughly where the Sam Merrill trail ends about 0.3 miles past Inspiration point via the Castle Canyon trail. All trails are marked with new wooden signs... Although finding your way back to Henninger via the Idlehour trail from Inspiration Point can be a little tricky. Head east from the Idlehour campground sign and start heading uphill. This is not a particularly difficult hike, but it's length makes it a moderate effort. Bring extra water, maybe a light snack, and plan for a few buggy spots, especially during the summer. The gnats can get thick.

You need to hike with someone and drive separate cars so you can leave one car at the Vincent Gap parking lot. This will allow you to do the 5 peaks all in one directions without having to make the hike much longer by hiking back to your starting point. Here are the 5 peaks in the order you will do them in if you decide to take on this challenge: Islip, Mount Hawkins, Throop Peak, Mount Burnham, and lastly one of my all time favorite peaks...Baden-Powell. Parking- so again you leave one car at the Vincent Gap parking lot which is used for people who are hiking to Big Horn Mine or Baden-Powell; you and the person you are hiking with will drive another 10 minutes or so until you get to the trailhead for Mount Islip. Trail (Peak 1)You will hike by the Little Jimmy Campground until aroun 2 or 2.5 miles you will reach an intersection where the PCT and Windy Gap connect...at this intersection you need to go to the right which is the Mount Islip trail and after about another mile you will reach your first peak, Mt. Islip, which has the remnants of a stone structure (elev. 8,262) and there are great views down toward Azusa and on a clear day all the way toward the ocean and even Catalina with views in the opposite direction toward the high desert Trail (Peak 2)- you will follow the same trail back to the intersection with the PCT and these next 2 miles to the 2nd peak will be the steepest but nothing too bad until you reach Mount Hawkins (elev. 8,783) at this point you will have hiked a little over 6 miles and 2 or 3 hrs so might be a good idea to take a little longer of a break to eat something...there was no sign or marker that we found here to officially signify Mount Hawkins but it will be the highest spot in the area and if you are using All Trails map it will show that you have reched the peak Trail (Peak 3)- continue on the PCT toward Throop Peak for about .75 miles and you might be able to find more than one way from the PCT trail up to this peak and there is a marker to confirm when you reach this summit (elev. 9,118) Trail (Peak 4)- continue on the PCT for a little over a mile and you will reach Mount Bunham (elev. 8,990) and there was no sign or marker when we hiked it *we saw less than 10 people during the first 9 miles and these 4 peaks the whole morning during the 4 hours or so...that is about to change as you hike the last 5 miles to Baden-Powell and the Vincent Gap parking lot...this trail is much more popular and crowded and we probably came across nearly 100 people in the last 5 miles Trail (Peak 5)- you will hike a little over a mile to reach Baden-Powell which has amazing views, there is a monument to the founder of the Boy Scouts which the mountain is named after and you will usually find a wooden sign or two and a flag at the summit...this peak sometimes has a lot of people but there is plenty of room at the top for everyone to spread out comfortably...enjoy the views (elev. 9,384) and you will head down the PCT to the parking lot where you left the other car in the morning Distance- about 14 miles Elevation Gain- a little over 4,000 feet Difficulty- hard because of the overall distance and some people may have trouble with the altitude but on the easy side of hard because it is not overwhelmingly steep in any part and the gain is nice and gradual Duration- anywhere between 6-8 hrs of course depending on your pace as well as how long of a break you take at each peak

Stoddard peak is a mountain summit located near Mount Baldy that provides a great trail for first…read moretimers looking to challenge themselves to a peak. Roundtrip the hike is just about 6 miles. Most of the hike is along a grated road/trail which provides easy walking. The last part of the trail to the peak presents some challenges as you meander your way to the peak, dealing with some edge drop offs and rock scrambling. The hike starts right after a small power station off the Mt Baldy road- just after a couple of tunnels. There is an upper and lower parking lot. If parking at the lower lot, at night time watch out for the big pot holes- best for high profile cars. If both lots are full, there are additional lots- but watch for signs designating no parking. Make sure you display your adventure pass or national park pass, otherwise you may get a ticket. Once you start your hike, you have the opportunity to enjoy some sights of cute cabins- there is one that looks like a Hansel and Grettle house. The trailhead starts beyond the cabins, past a gate. The route to the peak is pretty straight forward till the end. The route will provide a gradual hill climb with approximately 1145 feet elevation gain. As of September 2025, there was an arrow made out of rocks on the ground that pointed to the climb for the peak- don't miss this turnoff. At this point you will be going uphill through some low bushes. As you proceed on, you will pass by some false peaks, make sure you continue on until you reach the peak with the sign with triangle and a number. You will also see some signs for pictures. Best to start early during warmer months- as the hike has very limited shade. Also the parking lots on the weekends get busy early- we arrived at 6am and the parking lots were near full. Download trail map- as there is not reception near the peak.

This hike going up the firebreak ridge to Lawlor, then to Strawberry Peak saddle and back is about…read more4.8 miles round trip. The hike starts at the same trailhead as Strawberry peak. You will continue on for about 1 mile, then see the steep ridge ahead that will take you directly to the peak. The climb is a little less than 1000 feet elevation in 0.6 miles. This ascent is very steep, and there will be some rock scrambling/climbing and loose gravel and scree to contend with. At times it may be difficult to get a foot hold. Take your time. At the top, the mountain starts to flatten and you will follow the trail to the right to Mount Lawlor peak (marked with a partial telephone pole). I would recommend to take the firebreak trail to Strawberry Peak saddle (about 0.7 miles) to descend, as it will be much safer. The trail is overgrown in parts and there is some rock scrambling down as well, but the trail is mostly visible and easy to follow. At the saddle, take a hard left and follow the single file trail back to the trailhead. This part of the trail is quite easy. If you are looking for a challenging alternative to Strawberry Peak, this hike fits the bill. parking - adventure pass required if you park in the designated parking lot (which is closed at this time due to covid-19 restrictions). Great hike but get ready for a tough ascent and a tougher descent. The first couple of miles are…read morefairly easy, the trail is straight forward and clear until you reach your U turn to head up to the summit (this is where it splits for strawberry peak) That trek up is tough, lots of climbing over rocks and spiky bushes. At times it feels like you've lost the trail but just keep heading up. I did not see anyone on my way up to the summit or down and I started around 10:30am. So this is definitely the path less traveled which I appreciate when I'm hiking. The way down is fairly straight forward, again it doesn't look much like a trail and there was LOTS of challenges- spiky bushes, loose dirt, it's a kicker for sure. If you're confused where to go basically continue on the trail south and it's a straight shot down. Very literally straight down. There's some cables to hold on to so keep an eye for those they're very helpful! I checked my GPS a couple times to make sure I was heading in the right direction but again it's really just down. A couple of things: WEAR PANTS!!! The spiky bushes are real and even with capris my legs are all cut up. Definitely wear hiking boots to protect your ankles on the way down. I'm writing this review during Covid 19 shelter in place, so the main parking lot is closed but there is a small parking lot just past the paved one where you can park and walk up. This trailhead as of when I'm writing this review is open and you're able to hike it still!

The trail itself is enjoyable and not too difficult, making it a good option for a casual hike. Parking can be a bit tricky. it's around $10/hour close to the trailhead, or you can park further down and walk up (which adds some distance). I believe there's also a shuttle option available. Overall, a really good experience and definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

This hike is over 11 miles roundtrip with 3,433' elevation gain/loss. It starts from Chantry Flats…read more Chantry Flats is a great starting point for many different hikes. The hike is mostly single file, except for the first mile or so. Most the the trail is heavily shaded in a peaceful, wooded setting with quaint cabins. There is a mix of uphill, downhill, and flat portions along the trail. There are very few areas with steep incline, so it's really a fairly easy hike overall. Once you reach Newcomb Pass, it is a flat area with 2 picnic tables. There is no view per se, as it is not on a mountain peak. However, you can continue on to Mt Wilson for more mileage and better views, if you wish. parking - adventure pass required. The lot can fill up quickly, so arrive early morning to get a space.
