I attended this meeting last Thursday and met many wonderful people. Coffee, popcorn and soda was served while we watched a documentary about WW2 Navajo code talkers. Their restaurant is very simple, but the food is very good, and the prices almost too low. The service is great, and for those of us in our 40's, it makes me feel young to be with so many fun and spry of my elders. So inspiring. I've brought clients in on occasion, as a form of referral as well as a meal, and they seem very impressed by the food and all that is going on there. The programs they offer, such as classes or trips, are excellent from my 2nd hand experience. I've referred several people to their programs and classes, and all have had fairly good to excellent experiences. They offer special trips to events, have concerts enjoy and a choir to join, computer classes to keep up with new technology, games and tournaments, and simply offer a place to hang to share stories. The only negative, which is in the works for them, is their shorter hours. They are looking to stay open a little later, but mostly weekdays only until 4pm. Not bad if you're retired, but more of a challenge for me to pick up information for people who may not live very close, or those who can't drive. Check out their current hours by calling ahead. Come in for a tour, grab a soup or sandwich, and find out what they have!

The best kept secret! I took two of my kids to see Kristi. My youngest son turned 10 and for some…read morereason we never really got to the point where he was fully swimming. Group lessons were really not a great fit at this point, because he was embarrassed to swim with kids much younger than him. I found Kristi online and gave her a call. She was so easy to talk to, totally got what I needed and told me to bring my older daughter at the same time to see if she needed help, too. After two sessions my son is swimming, neither kid is holding their nose or cares about having their face in the water and they are so much more comfortable. I couldn't be happier. The pool / facilities are super clean, parking is easy and she's so much fun - the kids love going there and think Kristi is the greatest person on earth! If you have a kid who's a tad nervous about water or not good in group settings, give Kristi a call. It's absolutely worth it.

This I had to see for myself. So, the other day I offered to take my kiddos there, and it's not at Abt, but rather hidden in the large Glenview Park District Community Park West right behind Abt. Kids refer to it as the Abt skatepark, because I believe it was sponsored by Abt at one point in time (I mean of course!). The park is a ramp-centric 15,000-square-foot facility designed for beginner and advanced level skaters. It has a bunch of smaller beginning ramps, quarter and half pipes, and a grind box/ledge and rail. There are no bowls. Note: It says no scooters allowed, but there were both scooter riders and skateboarders. The park is off the beaten path. It has benches for taking breaks, and there is also a covered area for those who want to enjoy some shade. On the day we went it was super duper hot, so we were there for only 30 minutes. Plenty of onsite parking.

My first experience with Yvonne Czarniak as a certified Energy Medicine practitioner was at the…read moreEnergy Medicine 101 class she taught at Marianjoy in Wheaton in July. She's an incredible instructor! She takes ideas and practices that probably aren't commonplace knowledge for most people, breaks them down into bite-sized pieces and presents them in a very easy to understand format. She's incredibly engaging, approachable, warm, compassionate and caring. She made a reference during class to her practice, and told us that one of the best and the worst things is when clients come to her and tell her their doctors have told them, "...this is as good as it gets." (Worst because she doesn't want anyone to have that sense of hopelessness and despair, best because she knows they're ready to work with the energy -- and not only can she help them feel better, she can teach them to help themselves heal!) Alarm bells went off in my head after she said that, because my dad's pain doctor had just told him the same thing...this was the best he was ever going to get. (He had hip replacement surgery in July 2011 and was starting to recover nicely from that, but the incision became infected and they had to re-open his wound to irrigate and he's never recovered. A full year of various specialists and consultations, MRIs and CAT scans, physical, water and massage therapies, and no one can figure out why he has such limited mobility and such intense pain. He's been on a regimen of super pain meds for the past 6 months, to limited success.) My parents live in Alabama, but they had just decided to come visit Illinois in August, so I asked Yvonne if I could make an appointment for my dad with her -- and if it would even be worthwhile to see him for one or two sessions since he lived so far away. She said, "Absolutely! And it won't matter that I only see him a few times because I'm going to teach him how to work the energy so he can help himself." She said it with such conviction that I knew everything would be OK. So, a month later my parents and I are sitting in Yvonne's office and my dad is trying to not be skeptical and pessimistic. His pain level is around 7 or 7.5. Yvonne does some energy testing on him, and starts unblocking, releasing, etc. It's kind of like getting a massage, but the contact is much lighter -- sometimes she doesn't even touch you -- and in my dad's case, she worked him head to toe. She was really good about explaining what she was doing, why she was doing it, what it might feel like...he was an active participant in his recovery, which is something he hasn't experienced in a very long time. At one point I think he also fell asleep because he was so relaxed. About an hour after she started, Yvonne was done and my dad's pain level was at a 5 or a 5.5. The other thing we noticed was that his speech was no longer affected by his pain meds -- sometimes he slurred his words or it sounded like his tongue was swollen -- and he was much quicker in processing and responding during conversations. This wasn't something I had personally seen since he went on the super pain meds. He continued to feel good -- there were some little hiccups during his stay with me, but he recovered so much quicker from them than he had in the past -- and he was actually practicing the exercises Yvonne had given him! My mom was as well! Three days later he went for his 2nd appointment, and his pain was a 5. Yvonne worked on him for about another hour -- again explaining what she was doing, how his energy was responding, etc. -- and he was so relaxed at the end it was like he was coming out of anesthetic you would get for a surgery. His pain level at the end of that session was about a 2.5. Truly, a miracle. He continues to do his exercises and he's continuing to progress and feel better. I feel like it's a cliche to say Yvonne is a miracle worker, but I don't know how else to describe it. My family and I will always be indebted to her. I can't recommend her highly enough -- she's truly amazing. And just a super nice, bright and funny person to know -- as soon as you meet her you just want to sit down and have lunch with her. If you have the chance to take a class she's teaching (she also teaches Tai Chi) or have her work on you, please don't miss it. You won't regret it.

I love the unique activities that they offer like: Floral Arranging, Cute As A Button Crafters Class, Oil Painting, Water Color Painting, Acrylic Painting, Line Dancing, Aerobics, and much much including Entertainment with Lunch, and I can't even tell you how happy I am since I have been going here. Unlike some of the…read morecommunity theatre venues nearby, this spot had quite a bit of space to sprawl out while waiting for the show to start and during intermission. I like how the hallways were fairly wide and there was furniture to sit down at as well. Parking here isn't too difficult as there are fairly wide spots that go around the whole building and there are multiple entrances into here as well. The bathrooms were also a good size for the number of people that the theatre can seat, so there wasn't much of a line to use them.
