Nested between the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Central Library, Mount Prospect Park is the second highest point in Brooklyn after Battle Hill inside the Green-Wood Cemetery. It fact, "It was used by the Continental Army in 1776 as a lookout point, which at that time offered strategic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, New York harbor, a portion of New Jersey, Staten Island, and Long Island"[1]. Mount Prospect Park has something to offer for everyone: - If you have a dog, this is a dog-friendly park, with many dogs enjoying the large grassy area at the center. Keep in mind that the area is completely open. There are specific off-leash hours, and I found all dog owners who come to the park to be friendly and respectful. - If you like to run, there is a running route that goes all around the park, mainly shaded by wonderful tree, that covers 0.22 miles/0.36 km[2]. There are also some stairs that lead to the highest point in the park, that are also good for exercising. Another set of (steeper) stairs is near the second access point near the Brooklyn Public Library. - If you have young kids, there is a playground with two jungle gyms separated by a sprinklers area, plus an enclosed area with swings, and six concrete small tables with benches. There are a lot of mosquitoes, particularly tiger mosquitoes i.e. the ones that are active during the day, in the area near the benches around the fence. The main entrance by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has no stairs, and its gentle incline is perfect if you have a stroller or bike. - If you have older kids, I have seen soccer games and other team sports (baseball, freesbee, etc...) or training sessions take place in the lawn at the center of the park. Keep in mind that the area is not completely covered in grass, and it can get dusty. The park seems to be generally understaffed (hence 4 stars instead of 5). The trash cans are not emptied daily, and the hours at which sprinklers are on during the summer, or when restrooms are open, seem to be totally random. While I find the dog owners and runners very respectful, some of the people who have birthday parties or other celebrations here tend to leave a lot of trash behind. It's spring, and as the number of weeks staying indoors gets into the double digits during NY on PAUSE, I've been desperate for some outdoor respite. I planned to picnic in Prospect Park but fearing that everyone else probably had the same bright idea, I headed toward this quieter stretch of green grass just across the way from the Brooklyn Museum instead. I breathed a deep sigh of relief as I saw big expanses of green grass under big shady trees without the crowds of people I'm sure Prospect Park had. While in pre-covid times people watching was part of the joy of hanging out in a park, being around people now requires so much anxiety and so many calculations around risk tolerance that I was glad for the dearth of folks at Mount Prospect. Enjoying a nice meal on a blanket under the shade of a tree was a breeze and walking up the hill gave me a nice vantage point to view this part of Brooklyn, forever changed but in some ways still the same. read more

You'll forget where you are. In a GREAT way. Like its much larger sister next door (Prospect Park), Mount Prospect Park is an escape from the noise (sirens/hydraulics), vehicular congestion, and cement-paved streets of Brooklyn. It's elevated so you actually feel very removed from the city streets below. There is so much green insulation that you may, just for a few minutes, forget that you're surrounded by the greatest and questionably, busiest metropolis in the world. Birds are always chirping, squirrels are plentiful and we have even spotted raccoons at night. Without being classified as a "dog park" this is definitely a park for dogs. While our pup is not ready to explore or run off-leash, the park does have designated hours for dogs to do so (early mornings and late evenings are VERY popular for this sort of thing). Be forewarned, there is no enclosed dog run, it's all open. The main area of the park is a massive circular lawn, dominated by pooches, surrounded by a paved path with wooden benches placed sporadically. The paths are usually dominated by joggers. There is an upper tier (provides a nice, grassy incline for the pups) with another paved path. The park also has a jungle gym and swing set area for kids, along with restrooms on a slightly lower tier. There are two entrances to the park: the first is adjacent to Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Eastern Parkway entrance and is best for those with strollers (a paved path with a fairly decent incline up to all tiers of the park), the second access point is right next to the Brooklyn Public Library. This entrance is great for those looking for a little workout, you'll find a staircase leading up to the first tier of the park. No bells or whistles here, just beauty and peace. read more

Great park if you're looking for something smaller than the greater Prospect Park, and something a little unique as you have a number of stairs or an inclined pathway to get up to the top. It's a beautiful park with plenty of trees and green space outside of winter, and a great area to play in the snow in the wintertime. Lovely, calm park in the Prospect Heights area of Brookyn, nestled between the public library and Brooklyn Botanical Garden. The park is quite large when you're there, it seems small because it's sectioned-off in a nice way. There's a large grassy area in the center where you can picnic or let your dog off-leash. I've been to a bunch of little kid birthday parties in the park, too. There's a concrete walkway that circles the park, fairly flat -- a great place to learn how to skateboard. Nestled between the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Public Library, I thought this was part of Prospect Park. Instead, it is Prospect Park's quieter baby sister. The main part of the park is up a hill, and the sounds of the Eastern Parkway fade away and are replaced by the sounds of children in the playground and maybe the occasional dog. You're not far away from the street, yet you feel like you're miles away from the glorious chaos that is Brooklyn. If you want to find a quiet place to just relax, and you want to avoid the crowds at Prospect Park, Mount Prospect Park definitely the place to go. read more

It's just so nice... Quiet, calming and full of open space, Mount Prospect Park is a beautiful sub-section of Prospect Park located close to the Brooklyn Public Library. When I lived around this neighborhood (which I may again soon...), I used to love sitting on Mount Prospect Park and watching the pooches run around freely, playing and enjoying nature in the concrete jungle. Brooklyn really is full of these beautiful little surprises. A great place to go and regain sanity in this crazy city. read more

Its my "secret" park. Elevated from the hustle and bustle of Eastern Parkway nestled between the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the Brooklyn Public Library it's easy to miss and often overlooked. Its quiet and surprisingly large, well worth all the stairs. There is also a large playstructure for the kiddos. My doggie friend and I have met lots of friendly people and pups there. There are off leash hours in the AM and PM. read more

Although I live in the neighborhood, I never frequented this park until I got a (very active and social) dog. Dogs are allowed off leash every morning from 6-9AM. All of the dog owners who visit the park on a regular basis are friendly and courteous, and their dogs are a wide variety of breeds/sizes/ages. My dog almost always finds an appropriate playmate. It's a small park, but there's a large open field, many benches, and an enclosed playground. This park is slightly more convenient than Prospect Park for many in the Prospect Heights/Crown Heights area, and just as suitable for a picnic, tai chi session (as I often witness in the morning), or hour with a book. It loses a fifth star because sometimes there's trash on the ground. read more

Mount Prospect is a quaint little park that really is a Gem. BEWARE though, living here for 5 years the parks dept only mows the grass twice a year. First week in July and last week in August. The grass get knee high and the bugs, mosquitoes are extremely bad because of the lack of maintenance. For a park that takes the parks dept 3 hours to mow when they do it, which would probably only take 1.5 if regular schedule was addressed. Is a shame on the city of N.Y. and the managers of the parks. Which any other job this person would be fired immediately. Just a one star, I'd give a 0 if I could due to the parks dept. read more

A lovely little slice of the herbaceous and sylvan cake that is Prospect Park. It's within walking distance to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Museum and you have to walk up a couple flights of stairs to get to it. Although it's not as floral as the Botanic Garden's it's nonetheless a peaceful and beautiful part of Brooklyn. I found laying down on one of the many park benches scattered throughout the park to be relaxing and somewhat rejuvenating after a long day, trekking throughout the Botanic Garden right next door to the park. FYI: Laying down on a park bench is ideally a 2 person job. One person must be the designated lap pillow and the other is the "bench potato". Also, please remember to bath once you get home. Homeless people like park benches too, but a good ol' scrubbing can wash the bench junk off of you. There's a nice playground for kids and there were a lot of people picnicking the last time I came here. There is a huge clearing where several people where tossing around various objects (balls, frisbee, etc.) in. There are Designated Off-Leash Areas where dogs are allowed to be off-leash before 9am and from 9pm to closing. read more

Dog Friendly. Kid Friendly. Picnic friendly. Frisbee friendly. Shaded and sprinklered, big playground has several waterfountains and has a bathroom. A great place to gather with friends with or without kids. The giant stump of an uprooted tree on the far side of the park with its vast capillary root network dusted in soil was of particular interest to my son. Check it out! read more
