The Arcadia Management Area is a gorgeous place to go hiking, and both times I've been there, there weren't too many people using the trails, which was nice. Great place to bring dogs. There aren't a ton of views - I mean, we're in Rhode Island, not New Hampshire, but still a very pretty forest to hike around.
If you're hiking Mt. Tom - beware that there are no maps at any of the parking stations, and the trails, while well marked with blazes, don't really give you any other information other than what trail you happen to be on. It's surprisingly easy to get lost, since there are so many intersecting trails. Sometimes the trail will dump out onto another trail, and you have to really look around to find the blaze. I was also under the impression that Mt. Tom was a loop hike (from another review that I read on a different website, which included a map that I thought was straightforward), but as I was hiking it, it was clear that it wasn't. At that point I was about 1 hour deep into the woods and not sure how to get back without back-tracking the entire way. Fortunately I had the GPS on the iPhone as well as the compass, and was able to find my way back to the highway using the North-South trail - then I walked along the highway until I got to the parking lot. I guess I would advise looking at different maps on-line, and make sure you go with plenty of daylight in case you do get lost! read more
