If you're a boomer who never uses them for anything online, or only uses well-recognized names,…read morethey're great. If you use online services like Steam, Grubhub, or anything similar - they will fraud flag small online charges every two or three transactions, culminating in the need to go through a restrictive and cumbersome biometric verification - and/or waiting for an in-person letter for several weeks, or both - before letting you use your card again. But large in-person transactions will go through consistently, no matter how weird or wild. In other words, they're adopting the worst strategy possible to protect your money and the best possible strategy for them to make money. Their support staff also barely speaks english. If you escalate to a manager, you get someone who understands you, but also is reading from a script and doesn't know how the system actually works. If you want a card that's useful for in-person purchases, if you want a card for emergencies, if you want a card to book flights or buy furniture, this is the card for you. Don't rely on it beyond that though, because you will get screwed over by the moronic fraud flagging.

This left my remaining balance at nearly 96% utilization, despite having just made a substantial payment. I continued paying the account and ultimately paid it off, only to have Synchrony close the account. My concern isn't that Synchrony chose not to extend me additional credit. It's that these actions themselves can negatively affect a consumer's credit utilization and credit profile. I've filed a complaint with the CFPB because I believe this practice deserves review and greater transparency.
