The Mountain Bookshop is a very well-stocked, local bookstore with excellent experts. We visited looking for coffee table books for a decorating project and left with many excellent books. Cute local bookstore with a really nice selection of books, plus a small toy section that's great if you have kids. I always love browsing here. That said, the customer service has been consistently disappointing. Every time I've visited, the staff has come across as cold and unwelcoming. Mountain Bookshop is a cute little bookstore in Tuolumne. My friend and I stopped in today while shopping in the area and I'm so glad we did. The inside was pretty big with adult books in the middle, children's book on one side and crafts on the other - such as yarn, ribbons and even greeting cards. They also sold lotions, soaps and lots of book accessories. Staff kept to themselves and didn't really ask if we needed assistance finding books which I thought was odd, but they weren't necessarily unfriendly either. The few books I looked at, seemed to sell for face value and nothing was marked up or down. Overall, I thought it was a nice store and would stop in for another visit the next time I'm in town. Im super bummed that this is the only local bookstore. Its way to expensive for what little selection it offers, your better off ordering online. Not only that but they also have a very religious outlook certain books on "improper" topics are not offered and you get a look if you as for them. The ladies there tend to be very uptight and judgemental and they are not very polite. You get judged often by the people who work there. Not planning on going back. Online is a better option or even going out of town compared to this excuse for a bookstore. Would give zero stars if I could. Awful service. read more

The bookshop brings back the joy I had going to bookstores as a kid when my mom would let me pick any books I wanted. The selection is diverse, if not very big, and they will order any book they don't have on the shelves. The non-book items are fantastic! Nice shop, cute gifts and a very large children's section, with everything you need. That said, for trying to sell merch for children this is the most unpleasant, unfriendly shop for kids. The people who work here do not greet or acknowledge shoppers, and denied my two year old access to the bathroom despite her really urgently needing to go. Prior to Covid they had a public restroom but now it's "only for staff" and NO exceptions made, even for a small child with urgency. I was told to "use the public restrooms in TJ Max or Price Co" and the result was me running with my kids in tow, and we barely made it. This was months ago. I work the them on Instagram to advocate they make the place more friendly to children and perhaps seniors who need to use a restroom. No response. Figuring I'd give it another try, I ordered children's books for gifts for friends here instead of Amazon. Today a lady in the shop was again rude, judgmental against my children and I felt wildly unwelcome. I tried to avoid a Yelp review but I'm truly done and very sad about it. read more

Walked into Mountain Bookshop today. Been there a few times and each time the clerk's are absolutely dead, no greeting, no "may I help you", no " will there be anything else today", no " thank you, come again", and no " kiss my a$$". In fact, no nothing. Three old biddy's standing there and one in the back and not one person said anything at all, nothing. The owner should fire everyone there and start over. I've been in retail all my life, managed stores, and owned stores. There is no way I would tolerate this. The ownership does not care about you, the customer, as evidenced by other comments here and in other sites about the same problem with nothing done about it. I will never go in here again and will pass on my experience to others. read more

I really love this little bookshop! There aren't any big box bookstores in the area (which is my usual hang out) and I was SO excited to find this gem! It's quiet, filled to the brim with books and small gifts and despite their small size, they still have an entire room just for kids complete with books, toys, and even a train set they can play with while you browse. (My son loves the train part.) The staff is wonderful and always friendly and helpful any time I've visited. I wish I could get there more often than I do, they are wonderful! Went here to ask for a paperback book and was told it was not out yeT. Paid 35 dollars for a book to come home and find it on amazon for 10$! And it IS out in paperback aS well. I Love this store, when spending time at the cabin it's nice to have a good book to read. It was a surprise to find all the cards & soaps & goodies on one side of the book room and on the other side of the store is a children's room with books, toys and creative activities to keep the kids busy. They have a train/play table In that room for the kids to play with while you shop for your book or some other goodies. The ladies that run the shop are very nice and they always have what I'm looking for in a book. Definitely stop in even to look around, I can never get out of there with just a book as I Always find something fun to take along also. read more

What a wonderful treasure to find! We go to Twain Harte to eascape the Bay Area and yesterday we ventured out to explore and came accross this bookstore. The bookstore was beautiful and well stocked and nicely lit. The children's section was very enticing and had a few unique toys along with a lot of books. My son was inpressed with the dragons, Pheonix, and Griffin small animals. We will definately hit this place everytime we are in the area! read more

The only reason your getting a 1-star is because every single time I walk in here NO ONE greets me, you all just stare at me and watch/follow me while I browse through the books. Nobody has ever said a SINGLE word to me. This hen house gives me horrible vibes whenever I walk in. I've come in multiple times over summer trying to look for presents or good reading material but your constant lack of customer service makes me put down what i feel like purchasing. And guess what? This wonderful bookshop is quite a find. The staff is friendly and helpful. I found myself in need of a book for my out of area Ph.D program in a hurry. With one simple phone call they were able to get it for me from one of their warehouses at no additional cost. They told me it would be there in a couple of days and even called me when it arrived. Although the price was a bit higher than Amazon, considering the time in which I needed the text it actually ended up being significantly cheaper as I didn't have to pay express shipping and I got it on exactly the same day I would have had I otherwise used Amazon. read more

This is one of the real gems of Tuolumne County. A book store that is well-designed, appropriately stocked, and attractive with a pleasant and knowledgeable staff. They really understand their audience, which is important in a world of unlimited book titles and limited space. The store has grown to three storefronts; the door opens to the main chamber, with crafts to the left and children to the right. This is very wise; the children can get a little rambunctious without disturbing the other patrons. There are a smart selection of small toys and gift items as well. I only wish they were in a location that had as much warmth and character as I find within its doors. read more

I was so pleased to find such a great independent bookshop in Sonora! I visit almost every weekend with my daughter. The store is divided into three areas: gifts and cards, books, and a children's section. The card selection is varied and interesting. I send more cards which my family and friends appreciate. The gifts selection is ever changing. I've been working through my Christmas list for the last few weeks! The main section of the store holds the books. The area has the feeling of books crammed from floor to ceiling. The sections are easy to navigate. What a treasure hunt! Just walking through makes me want to read more. My daughter loves the children's section. Well, she's not quite a year yet so I guess I love the children's section and she comes with me. There are classics and new releases. I already have my eye on a number of series I can't wait to read with my daughter. There's even a little play area with dolls and trains. The staff has always been beyond helpful and friendly in our visits. We watched the Halloween parade from the store and the staff were thrilled to see all of the costumes and hand out candy. The store is usually closed on Sundays but has special hours through Christmas. read more

Sonora is extremely fortunate to have this book store available to us. I remember when it was literally just a little shack sitting on what is now the Sonora Bypass. What a beautiful book store it grew into. The staff goes out of their way to accommodate, and I've never asked a question that they couldn't answer. Nice book store that also has cute gifts. I stop in about once a month. I usually enjoy shopping here. Recently at my last visit, I was sick after using their hand-sanitizer that they ask everyone to use. It is not fragrance free and this is an issue for people with allergies and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) to name a few. I forgot to ask if the sanitizer was fragrance free and suffered with the smell that did not wash off completely. Tried to rinse it off my hands in the parking lot, but it barely helped. Made the rest of my time in town miserable. Never again. Even after washing my hands, the smell remained quite strong. Eating lunch with the smell on my hands was extra gross too. Hope they switch to what is best for all-fragrance-free hand sanitizer or warn people that it smells like toxic strawberry fragrance. Two stars lost until hand sanitizer is fragrance free. Funny I listed 3 stars but 4 stars get posted. Hmm. read more

This bookstore is intimate yet has a wide variety from the classics to new releases. They have cards and campy gifts, sophisticated and casual jewelry as well as quality toys and books for kids that allow for the expansion of their curiosity and knowledge about the world in fun and creative ways. The staff are so kind and helpful. They've ordered books for me and searched for authors of books I've heard about. They are interested in you as a customer and go out of their way to suggest books based on what you tell them you like. They gift wrap anything you want for no extra charge and it's quality paper and ribbon. It's a great place. If you find yourself in East Sonora near the Junction shopping center stop on and peruse the aisles. You are sure to find something interesting. I found a new paperback by one of my favorite authors today. read more
