As her major was psychology, he suggested a seminal book that she might like. So, I went on Amazon and ordered it in hardcover. They promptly shipped it in paperback. I returned it and reordered the hardbound. Again, they shipped me a paperback and, just for good measure, refused to publish my truthful review (which Amazon asked for in the first place) as I am not allowed to say anything that might reflect badly on a seller. So, I ordered it from Barnes and Noble in Modesto. Not only was it the edition I wanted, it was ready in minutes and good value for the price. When I stopped by to pick it up, the clerk was cheerful, helpful, and an all-around good ambassador for the B&N brand. I had forgotten how good these folks are. Amazon lost a book buyer and reviewer. Barnes and Noble Modesto gained both.

Everyone was kind except for one of the women working today. I couldn't get her name because she had a lot of charms on her lanyard, but she had black green highlighted hair, bangs and glasses on. We simply asked for help and was given a lot of sarcasm. Making it very obvious she did not want to be in that shift. It was my friends birthday and she was already not having the best day. I get it, we all have bad days but at the same time, it doesn't mean it's okay to spread hate towards others. With everything going on in the world that's the least we could do for each other. Thanks.

They talk, read, study, meet up, and exist together for a while. There's a different energy here that makes you want to slow down and be part of it. I love this place!!!!! There's more than just coffee and books here; there's a little community. There's a bulletin board filled with flyers for local happenings, book clubs, celebrations, etc. I came here one weekend to study and it, thankfully, wasn't too busy. The cashier was friendly and welcoming, there's WiFi, and a fair amount of seating. I can see this place getting packed during peak hours. One thing I noticed right away was a small book club meeting happening near where I was working. It helped me relax while I was focusing on my work! I think that's why so many of us like working in coffee shops... you can be alone while still feeling connected to other people around you. I'll definitely be back, not just for the coffee, but for the genuinely welcoming atmosphere. Thanks !

I originally went into find a book called before the coffee gets cold and ended up finding another selection that was recommended by one of the staff members called hot chocolate on Thursday. Once I had made my purchase I decided I wanted to really be immersed in the space and in one of my pictures you can see that I got a iced coffee with a blueberry scone. Both of the food items were perfect. The coffee had an amazing taste to it and the scone was unbelievably like perfectly buttery and not overly run by sugar even though it had sugar on it it just was perfectly balanced. The thing that I really enjoyed about this bookstore though was that it made me feel safe. I am part of the lgbtq+ community and being there made my soul and heart happy. I was surrounded by my community and I could tell just how happy they were. There was a group of folks in the middle tables starting to get ready for a small event it look like an art drawing event. The way they talked with each other and just the smiles they had on their faces made me smile so big. This place is a true gem within the area and if you ever have a chance to come in here to just be in a space of warm and belonging please do. And like I said the food they provide is super tasty and they have an array of selections regarding books and they can even order stuff online for you if they don't have it for pick up later. Hands down really really love this place.

This bookstore is awesome!! I can't believe I've never been here until now, though I have visited…read morethe Campbell location. First off, I love the political signs posted on the windows, like the "everyone is welcome here except ICE". When I walked in, the store looked exactly like what I've always envisioned a cozy community bookstore to be like--filled to the brim with books and with a lot of character. I came here to sell some books and it was pretty quick--I had probably 20-25 books and the employee finished in less than 10 minutes. As I was waiting for my books, I walked around exploring. I was very impressed with the selection of fiction. There were actually quite a bit of new releases, but also older books and editions that I would likely not find at a corporate bookstore. If I had the time, I'd love to spend 1-2 hours here just browsing. I didn't expect to get much money for my books; I was actually going to donate them and didn't realize that they still buy books, so their offer was ok. I was moreso pleasantly surprised that the employee was so nice lol, and also a little chatty. Honestly the last time I sold books was probably 15-20+ years ago at Half Price Books and I remember they were always pretty rude/standoffish lol. In addition to the service, the atmosphere, and the book selection, the cherry on top for me was that they have a special shelf where you can buy a book there for 50% off for them to donate to the library at Elmwood Correctional Facility at a bit of a loss for the store. I used most of my credit from the books to get a Stephen King book for the library.

The Bad: The staff can occasionally come across as a bit unwelcoming, and I personally wish the storefront atmosphere stayed more focused on books and less on outside messaging. They sometimes price popular or trending used books higher than what you'd pay for a brand-new copy elsewhere. The Good: I absolutely love the character of this bookstore. Shelves packed floor to ceiling, creaky wooden floors, stacks of books everywhere, and even a cat roaming around the store it feels like something straight out of a fantasy novel. I've visited countless bookstores, and nothing beats the old vintage feel of this place. They have a great selection of beautiful leather-bound books, plus an excellent fantasy and sci-fi section. I especially love when they put books out in under $6! The prices at this location are better, and this store feels much more like a classic old bookstore. The Campbell location feels more like a modern bookstore, and the prices there can sometimes be higher. At the end of the day, this place is a San Jose landmark and everyone should visit it at least once. Even when I disagree with certain aspects of it, I still keep coming back because it's nostalgic.

They receive tons of book donations from the community, which makes each trip feel fresh since there's always something new in rotation. The staff is friendly, the bookstore is clean and well organized, and the overall atmosphere is welcoming and calm. This place is a staple in Stockton, and we keep coming back again and again. The way the sections are set up and alphabetized is very confusing and makes no sense at all. There are piles of books stacked haphazardly around the store and even books on carts sitting in the aisles. There were CD's mixed in with books and even some vinyl were scattered about the store with no apparent designated place for them to be. I understand with customers coming and going, it can be hard to stay on top of these things, but as someone that has retail book experience, it looks as if this place isn't even trying. They do have a decent selection of recent publications, however you would have to spend the entire day in order to find them. The used book pricing is enticing, but not enough to waste one's time inside.
