Why I shop online I've used a wheelchair for over 40 years. I like shopping locally. I'm used to people talking down to me, treating me like a non-existent black hole. I'm used to people being mean, rude, and condescending. I get that. I live with that. Yesterday I went into the Mountain Trails store on the Loudoun Street Mall. I've shopped there many times before. The help has always been kind. I use a service dog. He's well trained. He's been in many local stores including the Mountain Trails store. Just this week I spent over $100 in the Mountain Store. Yesterday was one of the most embarrassing episodes of my life. As soon as we rolled through the door a demonic old man began screaming at my dog to get out of his store. "This is my store, and that dog needs to get out", he yelled over and over. He never spoke to me and never used a civil tongue. It was as though he was possessed, screaming, "This is my store, Get out of my store." He was a cretin-like creature spewing a litany of embarrassing, abusive, demeaning shouts that drew the attention of everyone in the Mountain Trails store. Now, he could have come to me expressing his concerns, but he was unable to look me in the eye and speak to me like I was a normal human being. He just kept screaming at my dog. I did what I always do in the face of ignorance, I ignored him, hoping he would just stop. I went to the counter and bought the one object I came for. I paid, and I left. I will never shop at the Mountain Trails again, and I encourage everyone with a disability of any kind to avoid shopping at Mountain Trails on the Loudon Street Mall. Save yourself the embarrassment of the screaming, humiliation, and sadness of this old man. The old man was unable to treat me like the good customer I was. I pity those, like this old man, who harbor, tolerate, and practice such discrimination against all who are different. It is his store as he made perfectly clear and I was unwelcomed. How unfortunate that such bigotry against all who are different gets celebrated. Amazon never sees my wheelchair, my dog, or my disability. And, that is why I will be shopping online. Oh, and it's cheaper, delivered the next day, in any size, color, make or model that my heart desires with a 5% discount every day. read more

Every time I am walking in Winchester, I like to drop into this shop. It is kind of like a condensed version of REI but with a hometown feel. I always walk out with something I didn't know I needed or the price was too good to pass up. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful and can make recommendations on local outdoor activities if needed. If you can't find what you are looking for in here, you probably didn't need it in the first place. read more

So I am going to start by saying the reason this review is 5 stars was the fact that the woman behind the counter was awesome! We came here looking for Keen water shoes, they had an ok selection with limited sizes. Once my wife had found the shoes she wanted to try on there was no one around. Now mind you, there were 2 men behind a curtain but were more interested in conversing than help on the floor. So I walked up front to see if she could get someone to help. Well here is the superb customer service that put such a high rating. I wish I could remember her name, as she was such a helpful person. You can tell in the way she treats her customers that she really like to help people. We tried on a couple of pairs and the wife found what she was looking for. Me on the other hand, I don't think a water shoe should have leather and that was the only men's in my size. And you all know, when they don't have it they just tell you and walk off. I have always had GREAT shopping experiences here. Prices are good to great. They are absolutely competitive with REI or EMS. If you are a person wandering the store comparing every item to AMZN, you're actually a bad person - truly. Bad. Truth hurts folks, sorry (not sorry). On Black Friday was able to score some most excellent deals on GoalZero solar items @ 20% off. Employees are pretty knowledgeable - someone can probably answer your question but no one is a 100% expert. I have never had a bad experience and I constantly buy a lot of sporty outdoorsey stuff. Over priced hipster gear with employees better suited to Walmart. Drove from Martinsburg to buy some Altra's. I am a runner and am very picky. Walked to empty store. Greeted purfuctorily by employees who then when right back to their conversation without asking if they could assist me. I had to interrupt to ask them about a specific model of Altra. Employee with blank face said me only sell hiking related stuff. The Altra Out road is a hybrid shoe. He knew nothing about the brands they sell. Go online and research any gear you want then buy online. When I hear "local" businesses crying about competing for business....well..here's your sign. But hey hipsters strolling on the weekends will keep these guys going. I work to hard for my money. read more

We've been coming here for years when it used to be in the other location & the employees have always been friendly & offered help. Maybe new ownership or management recently but last trip in we and one other pair of people were the only customers in the store with at least 2 employees. Not one greeting or acknowledgement, wanted to try a shoe so I sat in the shoe area for quite some time while employees went past back & forth & was again ignored. Only reason I made a purchase was because item was on a good sale. Not much reason for shopping retail anymore unless you're getting good customer service so yeah I would have no reason to go in here again. A store for outdoorsmen and women run by actual outdoorsmen. It's got everything you need without aisles and aisle of stuff you don't. Not for your average back-of-the-car campers; this store varies really high adventure gear and equipment for backpacking, climbing, and wilderness adventure. The prices are high but that is because well.. the prices of outdoor gear are high... they do not mark up the price on anything so the price you see there will be the price you will pay on REI. Would not recommend. Arrogant and rude staff, very condescending as I am a newbie to the hiking world. They acted "bothered" by basic equipment questions. Overpriced and selection was lacking. If you need hiking gear you can do better online and not have to put up with elitist attitudes. read more

Stopped by to check out their camping hammocks, and was blown away by the level of service offered here. Gene set a hammock up outside for me so I could check it out...he really went above and beyond! He was quick to point out solutions to my specific needs, even when it meant steering me to a different vendor. The store is filled with cool, quality gear at great prices, and the staff is ready to work with you and get you what you need so you can get out on the trail. I had very poor customer service when I had a warranty issue with a pair of La Sportiva boots. The tag on the boots said to return them to the place of purchase and when I did the staff had no knowledge of how to handle the situation. They said I would have to wait until the owner got back in town. When I got in touch with the owner he said he would call me back in a couple hours after he talked to the manufacturer and he never did. I called back a couple days later and a lady told me to bring in the boots and they would send them back for me. When I went to turn in the boots for the second time the staff had no knowledge of my issue and told me they would send back the boots for me, but I had to pay for shipping. After three weeks without a call back I called them and they told me that my boots were in and the warranty attempt was declined. In frustration I called up the manufacturer to see what the complication was. It was brought to my knowledge that the boots were never sent back in the first place. When I told the customer service rep at la sportiva they were very sympathetic about my situation and told me to send back the boots myself. I express shipped them and my warranty was granted. I had a new pair of boots within a week. I will not be spending any more money at mountain trails. read more
