Stopped by with my family for a wonderful time. We were gathering for a family reunion of types and someone suggested that we all get together at MountainRose. It was an exceptionally brilliant idea. The place has a phenomenal staff (especially Opie). They were welcoming, personable and knowledgeable. They had a deep experience with wines that helped guide the experienced wine drinkers and an empathetic approach to those (aka, me) who were clueless. I (ahm, the inexperienced) were never intimidated or given the snob treatment. However, my brother who knows his way around a bottle or two (or at least actively tries to fake it) was given the appropriate insights to what he was drinking. Across the ten of us, we tried multiple different wines and they were all well liked. Many made their way home as people had to take some bottles home. You can tell that I'm an amateur because the whole "flight of wines" thing was new to me. It was brilliant to sample many different varieties in what I would call shooters to the great disappointment of my brother. Yeah, I told you he acted like he knew what he was doing. They also gave us a brief tour of the beautiful grounds as well as a look "behind the scenes". I would really recommend visiting in the fall and maybe seeing things in action. The drive is a bit "way back there", but I highly encourage you to take the trip. It's definitely worth it. read more

MountainRose holds the distinction of being Virginia's western-most winery. 10 acres of grapes, heavy on hybrids but with some Riesling. They used to have Pinot Noir but sadly they pulled it out because it wasn't performing well. None of my pictures came out well because of horrible weather, but the area was pretty. The tasting room isn't big, but then again given their size they don't need anything outrageous. The wines had a mixture of dry and sweet offerings, including (most surprisingly) a nice sparkling wine named Kelliokee and a dry Riesling (nice pineapple taste). The Vidal wasn't bad either. Nothing was overly tannic (if that's your thing), but all were easy drinking and well-priced (most under $15). Because of the terroir of this area, you won't find Bordeaux-style reds - but don't let that dissuade you from trying it out. read more

Came here for dinner with a large group and had a lovely evening of wine tasting and dinner. MountainRose is on a hill overlooking a lake and it's a picturesque spot. There are lots of flowers and grapevines (of course) and an altar for weddings. I usually don't care for dinner rolls but they were fluffy and delicious. They also had this bomb bacon and cheese potato casserole and lemon poppyseed salad. They also sell cheese boards made of glass bottles, goat milk soaps and lotions, coasters, jams, t-shirts, jewelry, and other random gifts. There's also this vintage looking CD player in a corner they let us use. Staff are really gracious and I highly recommend this place for parties. read more

Awesome place, to sum it up. Tucked away in the picturesque mountains of SW Virginia, it's a gorgeous destination well worth your time. The wine is certainly delicious, but the service was perhaps even better. Opie is knowledgeable, extremely warm, and above-and-beyond helpful. She was kind enough to pour me a glass of their proprietary white blend to enjoy while I explored the vineyard. I bought several bottles to take with me and they are already gone. Another trip soon--highly recommend! read more

We stopped by last Friday (July 5) as a way to celebrate our wonderful week long vacation - and what an awesome choice we made! The folks at Mountain Rose were incredibly friendly - extremely knowledgeable, and knew exactly what wines to recommend based on just a few minutes of conversation - and they were spot on for every single selection! After the tasting we opted to have the wine and cheese platter - with cheese from a local dairy farm - and again - it was beyond perfect. The grounds are breathtaking, the setting, both inside and out - inviting, and the staff accommodating, sincere and helpful. We left not only with amazing memories (and some incredible wine) but also feeling as if we'd just made some dear new friends. Highly recommend! read more

Visited this little vineyard yesterday while out and about with the family. The place itself is nice, a little place all tucked back in a holler off the usual beaten path. Now, with that being said I only give it two stars for a couple reasons. First being ( though it is a smallish shop the main entry does have ample room to fit quite a few people) there was only one employee that we saw while we were there. There were a group sitting outside when we arrived and a lovely couple inside taste testing when we entered. Though we told the lady we would wait considering she(employee)was the only one there, both she and the couple insisted we could go ahead with our tasting. I can't remember exactly how many wines they had to choose from but we told her we only liked sweet wine and we just wanted to taste those she told us she had 6 so we began our tasting. In between her pouring for us and taking care of the other couple's order we had to wait a little while which wasn't an issue for us but, I felt she could have used some help. Second issue after tasting all their "sweet" wine which in our opinion was more semi-sweet in most cases than not we finally came across two that we really enjoyed and it was the last two she poured us. The concord and autumn gold. So we tell her we want a bottle of each and she grabs them for us. Now here's the kicker she sits both bottles on the counter concord first which is a normal bottle of wine 750ml= 25.36OZ then we see the autumn gold bottle 375ml=12.68OZ I look at them and ask how much the autumn gold is considering the size differences she says $20.00 I was shocked and then asked the concords price (normal sized wine bottle) $13.00 she says. I scratch my head and ask why the size and price difference. She then tells me where autumn gold is their sweetest wine it's considered their "dessert" wine and therefore not as much of it is drank when people drink it. I laughed and said well that would last us a day considering we like sweet wine. I told her to put it back I was not giving $20.00 for literally a bottle of wine that was as big as a bottle of beer. I can't figure out why they presume people only want very little amounts of this wine no matter how sweet when it's up to those who drink it. Especially for the price and size of bottle you are paying for. Just saying. So we literally only got one bottle of wine and won't be back anytime soon. read more
