This bakery is definitely up to something suspicious, because food this good feels like a glitch in the universe. I'm convinced the kitchen isn't staffed by humans, but by a team of tiny, flour-dusted angels who took a sabbatical from heaven just to show us how a whisk is actually supposed to be used. I took one bite of their pie's and honestly felt like I was being hugged by a warm cloud that also happens to smell like vanilla and joy. Their treats aren't just "baked goods"--they are hand-crafted miracles sent to grace our tastebuds. I'm pretty sure each cookie comes with a free soul-recharge and a sprinkle of pure sunshine. 11/10, would happily float off into the afterlife for one more bite, though I'd definitely get stopped at the Pearly Gates for trying to hide a loaf of tea bread in my socks. We are happy to support a women owned business that has been family owned since 1866. Also pleased that the nearby Niskayuna Co-op carries their pies year round. The pies are 100% hand made! The Co-op takes orders at Thanksgiving. I put in an order and was amazed at the large tables filled with numerous pre ordered pies waiting for pickup. They were arranged by type. They are popular! My family likes the Apple Pie with a streusel top. Strawberry Rhubarb, and the mixed berry pie from Mourningkill. They make a sugar free Fruit of the Forest Pie. I like to make my own pumpkin pies. Their pies have a tender flavorful crust that is easy to slice and does not crumble. It does not taste mass produced like some commercial or frozen pies. Their pie fillings are not runny, so they slice and serve nicely. They make 10" and 5" pies. Mourningkill Farm's baked good are available at select stores and restaurants. They are primarily a wholesale maker selling to local organizations in their area. I first tried one of their pies at Blake 925 Deli. I found their pies (5" and 10") and tea cakes at the Niskayuna Coop. I believe gluten free pies are also available at Honest Weight Food Coop. Their baked goods, especially the pies, are very good. They aren't cloyingly sweet; they strike a balance between the natural tartness of berries (I had the Very Berry) and just the right amount of sweetness. The crust also has a nice texture; the bite and flake of it pleasant. Another thing I notice when I read their tea bread ingredient list, I can pronounce every single one of the ingredients. Banana, cane sugar, wheat flour...salt. No artificial nothin'. Not only are the breads and pies good, they're wholesome! MEA CULPA!! Time to display my ignorance. There are NO CHESTNUTS in any of the pies from Mourningkill Farm. It was not chestnuts that helped me to enjoy any of their pies. If you see one of their pies labeled as Lemon Chess, or Peanut Butter Chess, etc., "Chess" is a style of pie. Chess pies originated in the Southern United States. They contain corn meal in the filling along with other ingredients. Some believe that the Lemon Chess pie got its name because English lemon curd pie filling is like the lemon chess filling, and they also believe the word "chess" is an Americanization of the English word "cheese," referring to that curd pie. I on the other hand, prefer to accept the explanation that, it being a Southern U.S. originated recipe, a cook on a plantation made up this recipe and when asked what she had made, her answer was: "just pie." Which when delivered in a Southern accent could easily be misheard as "chess pie." A pie by any other name is still a pie. And no matter how you may slice it, Mourningkill's Chess pies are delicious. This Lemon Chess pie is not as tart as many lemon pies. It also is not overly sweet. The filling has a relatively light texture, as opposed to lemon curd or lemon pudding, and of course the crust is the usual Mourningkill tasty and flaky texture. The real deal! 100% handmade fresh pies. Which would be a cool story even if the pies were just ok... but the pies are fantastic! Crust is the perfect texture to carry the fresh fruit, which is not too sweet. It's hard to do simple and make it excellent. These guys and gals got it down! Will be back next time I'm in the area. We picked up 9 varieties this time. Cut into the blueberry crumb and the double crust cherry so far. Both were the kind of pie where you just want more. I'll update when we try the other 7! We ordered a Thanksgiving pie for the first time this year. Terrible disappointment. Crust was overcooked and not flaky, kind of soggy. The filling was loaded with cinnamon so we couldn't taste the apple. Pillsbury pre-made crust with canned filling is not the absolute best way to make a pie, but it was head and shoulders above this one we purchased from Mourningkill Farms this 2023 Thanksgiving. It was also the same size as the ones I make at home in standard pie plate, so not very large. Easy and cheap to throw one together at home which is what I will do next time I'm in a pinch. The best strawberry rhubarb pie, I have ever eaten. My husband and I ordered dinner from Center Stage deli in Rotterdam ( another favorite of ours) he went to pick up our order and happened upon a pie, he got it. To my surprise, it was strawberry rhubarb. I am a hard critic when it comes to this particular pie. It is amazing! A perfect blend of sweet and tart with an amazing crumb topping. You may have trouble trying to do a search for Mourningkill Farm. Their business is listed in several Yellow Page type websites as Morningkill Farm and Bait Shop. But their sign out front is Mourningkill (with the "u"), and while they may sell bait, it was not immediately obvious nor does it appear to be significant. This place is really about apples and their bakery. In the fall, they sell several types of apples in bags starting at 1/2 peck and going up from there. You can get 1sts or 2nds. The apple quality even for the 2nds is quite good, and the prices are very reasonable. The bakery is open year round. The pies are delicious; 9" apple pies run in the neighborhood of $12. They sell other goods in the bakery at other times of the year. My mom loves their blueberry pound cake, though that is probably a summer item. read more

The Niskayuna Co-op sells pies from Mourningkill. I'll admit from the start that I would not identify as a "pie person." I avoid pies at gatherings and go for the cookies and cake. But, recently my husband requested something "healthier" to celebrate his birthday than our usual Carvel ice cream cake. So, I picked up a Mourningkill "red, white, and blue crumb" pie from our co-op. It said it had strawberries, apples, and blueberries, so that makes it healthier, right? OMG. It was delicious. The whole family REALLY enjoyed it. I bought it again, without the crumb, for an office pot luck and my colleagues loved it. And, I bought the blackberry for a friend's birthday, delicious too, if seeds aren't distracting for you. Needless to say, I highly recommend these pies! I'm still not a pie person...unless the pie is from Mourningkill. :-) read more

I was very disappointed after ordering a raspberry crumble pie to bring to Easter dinner and to open the box to see that more than half of the pie was burnt and unable to be used.
