The restaurant space is beautiful, and it immediately drew me in while exploring the streets of San Miguel. Once seated, service was friendly and helpful; the food was average, especially at the price and compared to other restaurants in town. The crab tostadas were fine but underwhelming and reminded me of the artificial crab salad I'd eat as a kid. The cochinita pibil was also fine but had some large pieces of fat and skin that were off-putting. My favorite items were the free bread in the mini cast iron skillet and the peachy cocktail special from the bar. read more

We stayed across the street from the Malitda Hotel during our 3 weeks in SMA as we attended Spanish Language classes. I decided to give it a try while doing my class homework. Oh what a delight- the salads are divine. The White Asparagus and balsamic tomato salad are fresh and delicious. We had a nice afternoon drinking and eating here. Of course we were given the usual "you don't have a reservation?" and all the bs that follows when a place is empty but they want to look exclusive. We finally were given a table and found only one other table occupied. We spent 2 hours there and only one more table came in. Point is you may need to pushy to get in. We had heard this was a Michelin rated restaurant and wanted to try it. The tasting menu is an overall good value at $56 or so for 6 samplings. The food was perfectly fine but I was disappointed thinking it would really be a "wow" after hearing all the hype. It's worth a stop. In general this place was a disappointment. The atmosphere is lovely the service is very good but the food is pretty expensive for what you get. We were a party of three and one of us wanted to do the expensive tasting menu but they said everyone at the table needs to do it. We don't think that is a very good policy. We had the filet ala carte and then a risotto and finally salmon trout. They each were very tasty but the portions are small except for the risotto. Each Andre was about $20 which is pretty expensive for this town. The tasting menu is about $50 USD for five or six courses that does not include wine again pretty expensive for this town. But perhaps it's worth it we may try that some other time. read more

We visited this restaurant on a slow Monday night. The space is beautiful and the service was professional and friendly. Sadly, the food was really awful. We did the tasting menu and of the 6 dishes only two were edible. The first course was a tomato salad and that was very good. The cheesecake dessert was good. Everything else needed salt. Two of the dishes were the wrong temperature and bland. There was a lamb sausage that was so over cooked we had trouble cutting it. It was dry and bland. Overall this was a disappointing last meal in San Miguel. I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Honestly, food wise, this spot no longer deserved the extensive biting online diatribe. The new chef, a graduate from Enrique Olvera's Kitchen, brought over Pujol's super yummy crispy soft shell crab. The pulled beef tostada was a towering revelation in the literal sense. The roasted Cornish hen was world class moist. I loved it that Huitlacoche was extolled here in not just one dish but two dishes. And they were both wonderful--in a tamal and in a risotto. It was specifically for these 2 dishes NOT on the tasting menu that I made a dinner reservation here. And I requested our group to be seated at the dramatically lit round table when making the reservation. Very very unfortunately, Rodrigo (extremely warm and friendly),who heard me wax enthusiasm over Huitlacoche on the a la Carte menu, did not say anything about a supposed rule that required the tasting menu in order to qualify to sit at the round table. As a result, after a mere 30 seconds of excitedly sitting down, we were booted to a different table by a rather inflexible young waiter/manager. The tasting menu cost just $56usd. What I ordered that night--3 apps and 2 mains, cost way more than that. That table sat pretty and empty the whole night. As I heard, nobody reserved that table the next night either. I am just saying that when your restaurant is clearly trying to improve its online reputation, and the food has gotten good, why shoot the kitchen staff in the foot with such an asinine front room rule. We went to this lovely restaurant which came highly recommended on our last night in San Miguel- Christmas. Visually the place is beautiful and sophisticated. We were seated promptly and placed our cocktail order. My husband ordered a high end tequila which they did not have, he then ordered another mid range tequila which they did not have. The waiter brought over a bottle- said this was similar and poured it for my husband. When the bill came, the single shot was in excess of 100$ US. We complained that the waiter did not tell us the price if it was so much more. They cut the price but continued to argue and were rude. And the food- well it was by far the most expensive meal we had in San Miguel and not the best. I'll Leave it at that. We are sophisticated world travelers and we speak Spanish! "Duck confit" was shredded dry left over duck, it was disgusting, didn't eat but a bite of it and just wasted money on this whole meal. Beautiful setting for an elegant dining experience unfortunately the food was mediocre at best. I had the "catch of the day" served on a bed of lentils. The lentils looked more like a type of Lima bean which was fine except that it was not completely cooked. The fish was ok nothing extraordinary in flavor or culinary talent. We had the tamal with duck as an appetizer. This was excellent in presentation and flavor. The table was set with dishes as if something was to be brought out requiring a spreading knife. Maybe for bread. Nothing was served requiring such utensils. After dinner was served we never saw the waiter again. We decided to go elsewhere for dessert. One star each for Beautiful hotel and beautiful poolside restaurant. But that's where the stars end. Very limited menu and only do a couple things right. We've been going here every Saturday because they offer valet parking which my grandparents need, but not giving a star for valet. So six weeks in a row I've tried everything on the appetizer and main course menu and only two things are ok. Only ok. And you will overpay for them. The beef tostada appetizer and the chicken with pork belly mole. I agree with all the experiences from all the 1 star reviews as I have been here at least a dozen times. Save your money. Wonderful restaurant/bar located in the GORGEOUS Hotel Matilda. For me, the service was exceptional and the atmosphere was wonderful. We enjoyed the charcuterie board which was really tasty - good selection of cheeses and specialty meats. We also enjoyed the beef burger, the tuna tartar and a flat noodle pasta that I don't see on the menu now (it might have been a special). in one word, wow. the staff is extremely attentive and the ambience is relaxed yet sophisticated. this place is definitely underrated considered that the chef , one of the best in mexico, combines contemporary mexican fare with traditional staples from the otomi people and the guanajuato region. one of my appetizer was a uniformly charred avocado with shrimp ceviche inside the pit of the avocado. you can't find that at many fine dining restaurants wherever. i will for sure come back here with my family next year. read more

Aldama 53 San Miguel De Allende 415-152-1015 We had a delicious lunch at Moxi. The surroundings are lovely and it has an indoor area as well as a covered, heated outdoor area. The service is very professional and through. Waiters dressed in black and white. They have a full bar as well as good entree selections with a fresh twist. The bread is fresh baked and delicious. We had several items off the lunch menu which looked more like a brunch menu. The menu was somewhat limited. We had the Eggs Benedict, Salmon and Bagel, Hash Browns and a bean spread, cheese topped broiled bread which the name escapes me. All were cooked perfectly and presented well on the table. The Eggs Benedict were topped with crispy shoe lace fries and the egg yolks were a rich deep yellow indicating fresh locally sourced eggs. The bagel was warm and toasted and the salmon was lightly smoked and fresh with multiple toppings and included the traditional cream cheese. The hash browns were an unusual combination served with napal underneath. It was warm and comfortable. It's a little hard to find but look for Hotel Matilda and its located in the back. Here is an insider tip: Beware of restaurants who claim to be "the best" but where NO LOCALS EVER EAT. Everyone I know who is a local agrees: if you go when the chef happens to be there (and that seems to be rare, and ridiculously overpriced when it happens), it is good. If the chef is not there, prepare to send back your plate for all kinds of issues. I've had several people tell me the same story! They went, had to send back their plate. It has to be pretty bad for a guest to do that, but to hear it from multiple people? And to know that locals do not eat there? Oh, and - the snotty looks you get when you walk in - prepare to be looked up, down, and then - perhaps to be waived in. Ugh. read more

So we heard a lot about this place and its chief. Unfortunately, sometimes places can't live up to the hype. The restaurant is beautiful but gives you more of a South Beach feel than Mexico. San Miguel has spectacular architecture and clearly a strong movement to keep it well ground in its roots. As for the food, it was different. The chief has creative ideas but departs from local cuisine. This Mexican Fusion dining comes at a cost, however. Of all the restaurants we have eaten at here, this was by far the most expensive. Moxi is in the hotel Matilda and is a really beautiful space. Much more Miami than Mexico but a nice change of pace. We loved the amazing art on the walls and the feeling of being in a special place. The food was good not phenomenal. The veg options were limited and they were out of one item. Service was attentive but at times seemed rushed. They had run out of the appetizers on their tasting menu (which was odd) and then the meat was very tough. My friend ordered the chicken which was very dry. This is the best third restaurant we have been owned by the same chef,and by far the worse, when we first arrived we were given attitudes, like what are you doing here? Do you have a reservation? We said yes and then we were taken in and seated. We were a party of six and only had one napkin and two menus. We try ordering the set menu and they had run out of the soups, I order the suckling pig and could not eat it, the rest of the party order steaks and they were tough but tasted good. Surprise to see that this restaurant does not have more starts. We were unsure if we should take our 18 month old to such a fancy place. Upon our arrival,We were immediately greeted, and escorted to the restaurant. We informed the staff about our child and requested a seat away from all the other guest. They assured us we had nothing to worry about. The staff was amazing with our child and us. The food was even better. We had enchiladas and the rib eye. This is the second time we have eaten here. The first time it was okay, not bad, so we gave it another try. Big mistake. My dinner was inedible. The shrimp soup was so rank and old, we could smell it coming to the table. I took a taste, and immediately put my spoon down. The stock was either old, or made from old shells. The idea was inventive, but there is no excuse for this. I asked for a rare steak, and it came back medium-well. I did get another, but even that was not rare, but medium-well. The chicken, while tasty, was overcooked and dry. The service was poor and inattentive, despite a slow night. This restaurant boasts "the finest chef in Mexico", and one of the best internationally. He must have been on vacation. We will not return, and will warn others in San Miguel to avoid Moxi. There are other wonderful restaurants in this city. read more
