Even though there are hundreds of YouTube vlogs of varying quality about San Miguel de Allende, chef Pati Jinich was the one that triggered my interest in coming here through her long-running PBS travel and cooking series. She went to this particular traditional restaurant known for their signature dish, Molcajete. The term first refers to a Mexican mortar bowl made of basalt volcanic rock standing on three stubby legs. The same term also refers to the food inside. It's quite simple because it's all about the ingredients and the execution. Jamie W and I ordered the MX$550 Mix Volcanic Bowl where they grilled large amounts of arrachera (skirt steak), chicken, and cecina (cured beef) while heating up the molcajete. The meat was then layered in the bowl along with nopales (cactus), green onion, chiles, peppers, and queso blanco cheese. A spicy green chile verde sauce was drizzled all over the gluttonous mix (Photo 7). Fresh guacamole and creamy refried beans were served on the side (Photo 4). A stack of freshly made tortillas was provided in order to gorge on all of the hearty indulgence which continues to stream well after its arrival at the table. The total amount could've easily served four ravenous people with both the arrachera and nopales the delectable standouts. Out of blissful ignorance, we both ordered salads as if the volcanic bowl wasn't going to satisfy us. Jamie had the MX$135 Mixed Salad with lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, red onion, pasilla chiles, mushrooms, and a rosette of avocado slices (Photo 8). I went with the MX$200 House Salad with lettuce, hearts of palm, cubes of chihuahua cheese, green olives, grape tomatoes, and red onion (Photo 9). Both were more than freshly satisfying as we were filling up on housemade tortilla chips with red salsa and fresh pico de gallo (Photo 5). The space was cavernous with plenty of room for large parties as families converged on this place. We could totally envision live music performances in here, especially with a long, fully stocked bar beckoning. Although I've seen mocajetes on random Mexican menus around San Francisco, I agree with Pati that this type of place would be quite successful stateside. If you're planning a trip to San Miguel de Allende, I recommend following Pati's advice. Huge Molcajete for a great price. I shared this with my girlfriend and we still were not able to finish it. The aracherra was so tender, the chicken was juicy, and the chorizo had great flavor as well. We went on a Sunday afternoon and were sat within five minutes. After walking through a street full of people trying to coax us into their restaurant, I felt relieved that the restaurant we initially chose and was going to didn't have that as it felt less touristy in a way. We were able to easily find a table during a weekend early afternoon which was great. - Especial Molcajetes - I was super excited to try this dish out and although not everything was good, some things were quite mind blowing. I absolutely loved the thick cut pork as some of it tasted like jerky as it was being cooked by the "bowl" of the dish. Same goes for the thin sliced beef which was amazing. I also loved how the cactus kind of acted like a pickling agent to cut through the fattiness of the meat. The middle sauce/soup area also had a fantastic and rich tone. I would definitely highly recommend getting this dish. - Tampiquena De Res - I was not as big of a fan of this dish. The beef was okay and didn't have a lot of flavor. I thought the mole was also interesting as it was a lot sweeter than the moles I've had before. I will say that I really liked the roasted vegetables though as it gave a good contrasting flavor to the heaviness of the meats. - Complimentary Chips - I honestly really liked the chips as they were very crispy and had that slight burnt edge to it. The pico de gallo was so incredibly fresh, it felt like they had just chopped the tomatoes in the back. We ordered this for 4 people and this was definitely way too much. Honestly if you're not super hungry, I think that ordering the especial molcajetes would've been enough especially if you're looking to eat other things while exploring the neighborhood. We ended up having quite a bit of leftovers to take back which would probably be enough for 2 people as a meal. Overall, fantastic food and would highly recommend when in SMA. read more

Los Milagros was a fun place to eat in San Miguel de Allende and felt far more traditional than many of the restaurants in the centro. The food leaned clearly toward classic Mexican flavors rather than a modern or international interpretation. We ordered the volcán with mixed meats, which was excellent and perfect for sharing. It arrived in a hot stone bowl with a vibrant green sauce and stayed piping hot throughout the meal. The dish included cactus and four different types of meat, and it was more than enough for the five of us to share comfortably. The atmosphere added to the experience. There was live music that evening, a tasteful combination of a violinist and a DJ, which created energy without overwhelming the space. Pricing was very reasonable. For five people sharing the volcán and each having a cocktail, the total came in around $100. Overall, Los Milagros offers great value, a lively atmosphere, and genuinely traditional food. Came here during lunch and it felt like overpriced food in St Miguel. While it had alot of reviews many of which were really good, it became apparent that it was because alot of tour groups would bring their groups here for lunch and they had a prixe fixe food from the tour. No live music when I was there for lunch. The tacos were a little better than the street tacos but cost 2-3x as much. Following a long day of travel, Los Milagros was the place my airbnb host suggested for that evening's dinner and it pretty much offered exactly what he said it would: a big plate of food. I didn't leave here even one bit hungry. I also wasn't wowed by anything I consumed. Apparently known for their Molcajete, I opted instead for Beef Fajitas ($330MX), which suffered when compared to the same thing ordered stateside. This may say more about my apparent preference for California-Mexican food than Mexican-Mexican food; My palate is just more familiar with and accustomed to the former. The Fajita beef lacked the char I am used to and all of the flavors fell short. The same could be said for the Shrimp Fajitas ($345MX). Is it Los Milagros or is it me? That's the question, so it comes down to this: * If you like US-style Mexican fare you might not love the flavors of your meal here; * Between the chips, guacamole, salsa, and your order though, you'll likely leave here with your hunger sated; and * Perhaps you should opt for the food with which you're unfamiliar so you have no preconceptions. Have you ever had a meal and afterward you wanted a do-over because you wasted calories and one of your vacation meals? That's how I felt. We were here because we wanted tacos. We wanted to try a recommended place, and a salesperson at a store recommend this restaurant. She was wrong. It was not good. My tacos (chicken, shrimp, and fish) were all oily and the meat was cut up so small, it indicated low quality ingredients. My husband's chicken enchiladas were just ok. Truly an awful experience. I went with friends to the location by the mirador. Construction was going on, so the outer terrace was closed off. My friends arrived before me and got a seat anyway. There was still a view, so fair enough, though the tables were crowded together. It soon became clear that there was construction going on atop the huge metal ceiling, with sawing and hammering being amplified by the giant sheets of metal. The staff turned up the volume of the music to compete and the cacophony was hellish. Meanwhile everyone in the restaurant is packed in like sardines so the shouting from their tables added to the din. My friends were willing to tough it out at first, so we ordered. As the noise rose, one of them reached her tolerance point and went and asked the hosts by the door if anything could be done. She was told, "You get used to it." Then the food came; my three friends had fish. They were all satisfied. I had chicken fajitas; the driest, least seasoned, most bland thing ever to be rolled in a tortilla. In short; Ambience: Hellish Service: Table service good, management responsiveness, insulting. Food: From just fine to pretty bad Pricing: Far too much for the experience and food we had. After years of looking at YouTube videos of the magical city of San Miguel de Allende, I was able to visit this year and Los Milagros added such a beautiful touch. I found this restaurant form a fellow Yelp Elite and it didn't disappoint. I will say Mexico has by far some of the strictest guidelines when it comes to COVID 19 but it was overwhelming and everyone seemed really happy to help you not like the US. We sat in and right away felt at home and with beautiful live music plying which was so good to hear and enjoy.... it did take us awhile to get service and we had to remind them but once we got someone to help us it was smooth sailing... it was a warm day and I asked for a refreshing house made sangria and it was amazing ... definitely one of the best ... I ordered the Mexicano molcajete and it was perfect.... I'm a big fan of family style meals and molcajetes are a tradition in my family ... the queso, chorizo, tender steak and sauce was cooked to perfection.... everyone else definitely enjoyed their meal but the best past was the atmosphere everyone singing and eating.... one of the best memories of my trip.... thank you Los Milagros I will definitely be back read more
