I am a creature of habit.
And I'm a girl. I don't like people messin' up my hair.
That said, I am not one of those girls that freak out over a bad haircut either. I have had my hair chopped off to have a boy's cut on purpose, just for a change, have colored it all the way from gothy jet black to nearly auburn blond - and have gotten crazy perms in my life just to have fun. It's all good. The only thing I ask from my stylist is that you listen to what I am wanting - - and give me just that. No more, and no less. Even if its sounds insane and you know I will look heinous - give me what I want.
So, for the last 10+ years, I have gone to the same two places. One was close to work, and the other was close to home, and whichever salon I was closest to, I walked into in order to update my "do". Some of the things I asked for, they warned me against. Twice in my life, they gave me what I wanted, and I ran to the other one to undo what I had paid to get done because it was THAT horrible. But I don't cry about hair - - it grows back, and I don't hold it against the stylist if what I asked for turns out making me look like a disaster - with legs.
But now, living in SF, neither is a convenient location for me (Pleasanton and Fremont), so I decided it was time to move on. Out of sight, out of mind - - it was a good relationship.
To further clarify - I am not someone who likes to spend $400 for a color and cut. I am pretty creative when it comes to styling my hair, and if I do say so myself - - I can work magic with a blowdryer and curling iron. Just give me something I can work with at a good cost and I'm happy. Easy to please.
My mistake was, perhaps, using reviews from a predominantly restaurant review site (YELP) to find a hair salon. There's no way to gauge what other people consider "style".
The location is good, parking was really easy and the receptionist was friendly.
My stylist, who will remain nameless to protect the innocent, was nice - - sweet and friendly, but did disappear on me for about 15 minutes during the coloring for no obvious reason. I had a lot of time on this particular day so it was no big deal but on other days, this would be enough to make me hit the roof.
Where she and I did not see eye-to-eye was what we consider a good haircut, in spite of my directions and requests.
One haircut should be VERSATILE - enable me to do several different styles with it, be it curl in, out, or tie back.... and the only mandatory criteria is that I have to be able to put the whole thing up into a pony tail (which is my hair 75% of the time). The latter part, she got fine. But what I ended up w/ was not a versatile cut as far as style goes. It was very blunt, and while it works well with one style, I'd have to live with that one style for the next couple months -- and that's just not me. I need something I can DO things with. Furthermore, the style was not what I had asked for - - and frankly, my hair is weird and most stylists know as soon as they wash it that my hair naturally twists and turns in its own way. All of the good ones have accomodated this.
I walked out of Moxie with 4-5" less hair, and more gunk in what remained than I could stand. Thickening agents, curling agents, sprays, gels, what have you - - each strand weighed more than I could handle, and for a girl who puts NOTHING in her hair most of the time, the only thing I could think of was washing it out. Besides, you don't really know a good cut from bad until you style it yourself.
What I found was that I had a haircut that I could not work with for long. After one night, I was already bored with it. It was boring, but it was also awkward - and neither are qualities I like.
So after $195 for a color and cut (which is whole lot more than I would normally spend on my hair but included a $25 tip) - - I made an appointment at another place to continue my quest for a new hairstylist. What's already been done cannot be undone, but so long as there's a strand remaining on my head, there is hope.
That said, I will add that the color job was very good and I am pleased with it. But there's not much you can screw up when the client asks for the darkest brown you've got.
All in all - 3 stars.
This is one area where most definitely, "your milage may vary". Hairstyles are entirely too subjective and personal. As is my motto when it comes to salons - - - try and try again until you find the right one, and when you find it - live and die by it.
