First time customer here. Came for Teppan service. Sat down and was immediately served drinks. Placed orders for food and waited a short while. The food preparer if you wanna call it that. Chef maybe. He was really good. At first I wasn't sure, because the man was missing about 5 teeth. Looked like a guy they grabbed off the street. He performed while he cooked. We made a reservation for 8pm for 18 people. We all arrived by 8:03 pm. Its now 9pm and we are still not seated. You can no longer use the excuse that you are waiting for other tables to get up. We've been going here for years and always get the Teppanyaki style food. Every now and then you get someone with new jokes while cooking. Very entertaining and the food is fantastic. Mr. An is regularly roaming to ensure customers are happy and taking pictures with people who have birthdays. Great family owned restaurant by a great family. read more

We were celebrating two birthdays and had a Thursday night reservation for 5 people. We were promptly seated at a teppan table, but 45min later no one had even come by to offer us water. We went to the front desk to complain and then our service began. The food was very good and the teppan chef was entertaining, but the poor service to begin the meal has left a pretty bad memory. First time going. New to tuscon so I looked up different food spots. This came up. Wanted to try it. Placed was packed had to wait for 45mins even though I did a reservations. Once we got to the table ever thing went great. Waitress and our chef was great. Even got to meet the owner he was walking around interacting with all the guest. This is a bifurcated review, of necessity. I dined here with a group of 17. Highlights are both the food and service. The staff- waiters and chefs- work very hard to please you. Our waitress, Jackie, served 50% more people than she would normally be assigned to, yet never lost her ready smile nor considerate manner. Our chef was equally likeable, and entertained us all by juggling an egg with a spatula, splitting it open as he caught it on the edge of the spatula. The food was uniformly well prepared and delicious. 4.5 stars so far. Where the restaurant fell down was taking 25 minutes to seat us. You can see further evidence of this annoying problem in other Yelp reviews. We actually thought we were going to be in our seats in ten, which would have been tolerable, but then we were told they were going to move a group to another area and we would occupy the vacated table. Hence the additional time. This restaurant sorely needs an organizing talent on staff. I should add this is a very noisy restaurant during prime time. After 7PM, as patrons left, I could finally carry on a conversation The appeal of this restaurant depends entirely on the elements you value. read more

This is the only hibachi restaurant that I know of in Tucson. The staff was super friendly and attentive. I went on a Friday around 5 o'clock and was seated immediately. Around 615pm it became crowded and there was a wait to be seated. We sat at the grill and had the steak and chicken meal. The grill meals come with soup, salad, and shrimp appetizer that consist of two shrimp's, noodles, veggies and rice. The food was not the best hibachi i have had, but it was edible. Could use more seasoning my opinion and the meat portions were small. The tables were not too roomy, which is my biggest complaint. The drinks were sooooo good! I must say by far that is the best prickly pear margarita I have ever had! I had two and both were delicious! I also had strawberry lemonade, which they make there. Love Mr. Ans the sushi is amazing and in my opinion the best in town! My favorite is the playboy roll and it never lets me down! We had a really good time (together) despite being plagued by mess-ups. We arrived and were greeted by a very young, seemingly very inexperienced hostess. She asked what type of table I preferred and I told her just a table in the dining room. She said they were all full and told me I could sit in the bar or outside instead if I wanted. I told her I would wait for the dining room. She said OK and then just stared at me. I had to tell her that she should probably put us on a waitlist cause she did not offer to do so. And when I asked her how long the wait would be she just shrugged and said, "I don't know, but you're next." Despite being next, we wound up waiting about 40 minutes while we watched other parties who came after us be sat first... Though we met some lovely people about 20 minutes into our wait who had just arrived and were waiting too... More on them later. Finally (after my husband going up and talking to the hostess twice) we were seated at a teppanyaki table (we gave up on the regular tables and took what we could get.) Our waiter was nice enough, but mess up after mess up continued to happen. First he served my 12 year old an alcoholic beverage which she discovered by drinking it... Maybe not the waiter's fault... Possibly the bartender's. Then we ordered appetizers and watched as tables who came much after us get theirs first... Including the lovely people we met earlier who arrived 20 minutes after us. Once the apps finally got there though, they were good... Pretty tasty pot stickers! And then more messups. My daughter ordered miso soup and got hibachi soup. We all ordered fried rice (for an upcharge) but only 2 out of 3 of us got it... One of us got steamed rice... Though we all got charged for fried. The steak was thin and fatty and nowhere near the quality I would expect from those prices. I don't even know why they asked us how we wanted our steak cooked... it was too thin to cook any other way than well done. Seriously... it was like a breakfast steak. (Maybe he butterflied it? ) On the plus side, the Derby sushi roll was excellent. Anyway... all that and not a discount in sight until I asked him not to charge us for the fried rice we never got. Did I mention once we sat down at our hibachi table, the main course didn't start being prepared until after we had been sitting there for 1.5 hours. And again, other tables who arrived after us were fed first. Overall a very mediocre experience definitely not worth the price. And the more I think about it, the more annoyed I get... I won't go back. It was a total ripoff. P.S. I was a waitress for 5 years and I'm very lenient with waitstaff, and I normally tip in the 25-30 percent range because I know their pain. I do not normally write yelp reviews. Though, the experience I had at Mr. An's Teppan Steak and Seafood, was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. My party of two made a reservation for 8:00 P.M. and was not seated until 9:10 P.M. After being sat at our table, we waited for 10 minutes, not one employee approached the table. After being at the establishment for 1 hour and 30 minutes with minimal service. My party and I decided to leave. I asked for the manager, which took another 10 minutes, Mr. An himself, came over to talk to us himself and basically rudely told us that he was busy and the staff did nothing wrong. I have never been treated as awfully as I was at Mr An's Teppan Steak and Seafood. I will not be returning and I hope that Mr. An will fix the problems with his business by treating his customers better. read more

I went to Mr. An's for the first time...and last. Ordered from the Happy Hour menu. When we got our bill, I told the waitress how the bill did not reflect the happy hour prices. She looked at the menu that she gave us, and told us that it was an old menu. I explained to her that we ordered food with the prices listed on our (old) menu. She shrugged her shoulders and walked away. It was at least a $12 difference, if not more. I did give 2 stars because the food was really good. read more

Went here for Christmas Eve. Sat at the Hibachi table. Starting with app, we ordered the veggie tempura. The menu said it came with an aioli sauce, it did not. We asked the waitress, who asked the kitchen and they said no, the menu is outdated and it just comes with soy sauce. Liked it anyways, except the broccoli, which was just soaked in uncooked tempura batter. Shrimp that came with meals weren't deveined well, and overcooked- too chewy. Soup was great, didn't enjoy the ginger salad dressing, too chunky and not really a dressing that could coat the salad (more like a grated, slightly wet pile of ginger). Rice, noodles and entree meats were awesome, we would go back just for the main meal despite the non favorites. read more

If I could give it a "0", I would. Nothing about this experience would ever lead me to return. First of all, I have eaten here before, but not again. The waitress, although cheerful, repeated the same message tired "quipped message" to all customers...not really connecting to those she served. Drinks were ordered and came fairly quickly. We were a table of 6 in the bar. We ordered 4 appetizers. The edamame was tough and stringy, the crab puffs small and tasteless, and the sushi was good and fresh, which we were all very happy about. The main entrees were ordered, and in about 20 minutes, 3 of our party got their meals. 3 of us waited another 30 minutes without any food. After flagging down a buser to get our waitress's attention to ask about the other 3 meals. She said the kitchen was backed up. Finally, we got our meals and the food wasn't even hot. We think she forgot...The food was a huge disappointment, especially the flavor and temperature. It was pitiful. Also, sad as this was a Birthday Celebration gone bad. The waitress did attempt to make amends by bringing out mochi for the table. Sadly, it was too little, too late. All 6 diners said they will not be coming back here. Too bad. read more

About an hour later we were seated at a table and I waited for my cocktail order to catch up. I was disappointed that they didn't have Suntori whiskey. A Japanese restaurant without a famous Japanese whiskey. We started to wait anew. Another party of two joined us and we waited and waited, ... at this point we had two hours of waiting and no food. My Wife was ready to call it quits. I saw some hopeful signs and asked for five minutes more. Meanwhile our table of four out of eight seats watched parties that filled a table sit down, get served and leave while we waited. Finally a chef arrived at our table and the show began. The food was very good and the staff encouraging but unable to get us fed in a reasonable time. Based solely on wait times Mr. An's earns zero stars. Solely on food quality and presentation they get four stars, five if we got seated and started eating within 30 minutes of our reservation. I struggle between two and three stars. The friendliness of the staff tends towards three. Their inability to get us fed tends towards one. Stumbled upon this Gem by chance. Happened to have booked a hotel across the way and it was the nearest place to grab a bite and a beer after work. Their Sushi menu is robust and delicious. Over my two week stay In Tucson I had Dinner at Mr. An's about half of my trip. I had the pleasure of trying every roll on the menu and was never disappointed! Mr An himself passes through and greats guests with great zeal and warm personality. The staff was amazing and upbeat every night and was eager to make suggestions of their favorite roll or appetizer. Their nightly bar tender Rachael is just as striking as her name sake, and has a talent for bartending seldom seen. Making perfectly mixed drinks and pouring perfect drafts while juggling orders and checking up on patrons. It truly was a pleasure dining here and when I make my way back to Tucson I will absolutely be back. read more

last night me and my boyfriend went here and we had a reservation for 9:15. we didn't get sat until after that time and it was completely packed in there. Our waitress was rude she kept reminding us that it was "last call" for everything when we had just sat down. after the restaurant had already closed, a Chef had still not come to our grill, half of the sushi we ordered wasn't given to us, and we had been sitting for an hour. My husband and I come to Tucson about every other month to get away. For the last 4 times we have we gone here. I usually order the Sorry Charlie and a few other plates of sushi. My husband gets the steak. This last time (this weekend) I got the Sorry Charlie and decided to get the shrimp meal. My husband who doesnt like seafood, and isnt fond of sushi ended up taking half of the roll. We have never had a long wait, and the "chefs" have always been good. The food has always been great. The only issue we've ever had was eating way too much. If you are hesitant about sharing a table at the grills. Go for it. Mr. An's, 12-30-2016 The end of 2016 was fast approaching. I needed to use my "Happy Birthday" card before it expired on the 31st. This card is usually given to you when you come in to celebrate your birthday and at the conclusion of your meal, you're presented with another one, to be filled out for the next year. Then, it's mailed to you in your birthday month. When I called the restaurant to make the reservation, a very nice lady asked if it was any special occasion and I mentioned that it was my birthday; which in reality had happened a month earlier, it's just that things have been rough at our house in 2016. We hadn't had the time to come in earlier, because on August 3rd, my husband suffered a major heart attack, yet he survived the 'widow-maker.' His doctor said that roughly only 5% of the people who experience this survive it. Then, on August 9th, he suffered a second heart attack; not as bad as the first, but still two heart attacks six days apart do a lot of damage. Luckily, he's a fighter, and he's still here and doing pretty well, all things considered. So we headed off to Mr. An's as we wanted to avoid being on the streets on New Year's Eve. This is one of our favorite restaurants. We really enjoy the food and the surroundings and we wanted to end the year on a high note and raise a glass to hopefully a MUCH better 2017. We ordered the New York Steak & Shrimp dinner, and the Tempura plate which included Tempura Chicken, some tasty Tempura vegetables and added the Coconut Shrimp Appetizer as these are our favorites. Everything was cooked perfectly! Every single bite was luscious. For drinks I had the Flying Dragon, and my husband ordered the Saketini. Again: perfectly executed cocktails. I left the "Happy Birthday" card in plain sight on our table, so our sever, Ashley R. could retrieve it whenever she needed it to figure the bill. Ashley was attentive, polite and courteous at all times. And she must have told us here name at least four times during the meal. Anyway, at the conclusion of our meal, she brought us the bill, and I noticed that the ticket clearly stated "B-Day" on it, yet she never brought me a dish of ice cream, which, in times past HAD been done. No one came to take our photo, which also in times past had been done, but perhaps they've discontinued this practice, I don't know for sure. And no staff came over to sing the traditional "Birthday Song." I also had to ask Ashley for another "Happy Birthday" card, so I could fill it out, to receive it in November of 2017. Only THEN, did she realize that she'd omitted a few things that had happened in years past. Yes, she DID apologize, but I told her to 'never mind' as I realized that the whole place was very busy, and she was busy, but what bugged me a little bit, was that she'd made certain to give her name several times, but didn't seem to notice the card on the table, telling of the special occasion; yet it was in plain sight at all times, till she came to remove it. The card itself can clearly be seen in the attached pictures. Make no mistake, the food was wonderful! The restaurant was humming with the happy noise of people enjoying themselves. I too have worked in restaurants, and it IS easy to overlook details sometimes, especially when it's busy; but with all we'd been through last year, we were hoping for a photo of us both STILL together, enjoying ourselves at one of our fave places. Will we be back? Yes! Of course! No doubt about it. We're loyal Mr. An fans, make no mistake. But Ashley needs to take time to notice the details because in any relationship, even server to patron, it's the little things that count. read more

Had a great time wile in Tucson for Parents weekend. We brought a a few of the kids from the dorm and we were all very pleased. Service was great, we enjoyed some cold martinis and wine with our appetizers and then on to the Tepenyaki. Our chef was great and got us all engaged. We had the salmon, ny sirloin, teriyaki chicken and shrimp. All were delicious. It was a great treat and fun night out for all. read more

This was our first Outing since March we enjoyed the family friendly environment, great food Highly recommend. They sang Happy birthday in Japanese to the birthday boy and brought out a dessert and also took picture of our family and gave us the picture in a card. Great experience. Ambitious upscale Japanese restaurant? I think not. Although Mr. An's is only listed as a $$ kind of place on yelp but it could get very pricey when they are skimping on the food portions. A couple I sat with ordered at least 5-6 different dishes before they asked for their check. I was part of a party of ~30 people. We had our private room to ourselves but overall the food and service were definitely below average. The sashimi slices are improperly thin. The rolls are unacceptably small and are not well made. The rice and the seaweed fall apart when grabbed with chopsticks. I had one of their claim-to-be specialty rolls, that was not at all special. Fried battered soft shell crab rolled in flavorless rice and topped with paper-thin slices of white tuna. It sure did sound delicious on the menu but it looked undesirable once the plate was placed in front of me. The freshness of white tuna was a bit questionable and the roll tasted average at best. The teppanyaki, on the other hand, was entertaining but was not any different than any teppanyaki houses I have been to - the usual onion volcano, the corny jokes, the shrimp toss and etc. I was starving by the time my food arrived. It took 30-45 minutes to get my sushi and of course they did mess it up the first time. The service here is horrendous. Our waitress was just plain rude. One person on our table asked our waitress if she could come back to get his order because he was not ready, she bluntly replied "no" without offering any alternatives. The waitress pressured a customer, whom is paying her 18% of his bill, to make his decision on a spot just for her own convenience' sake. I for one cannot stand how waiters/waitresses treat their customers in big parties rudely when they are guaranteed to be given 18% gratuity, which gives them no motivation to do their jobs. Overall, my experience at Mr. An was a big disappointment. Nothing here is worth coming for - neither food nor service. read more
