Ceviche tostada
Uri P.

This place is a disaster. The ambiance is deeply weird (they fixed the no music problem cited in prior review, instead they had a lounge act rendition of the Spider Man theme) and we were the only customers in the small restaurant at 11:45 a.m. on a Saturday. To drink, I ordered a Diet Coke, and my wife just asked for water. The Diet Coke came out in a can, which had expired four months prior (August of 2024. Isn't that when this location opened!?!?) and lost its flavor, and my wife's water came out in a plastic bottle. I ordered the dynamite roll, fried shrimp and cream cheese Inside, with salmon on top, and an order of the tostada with shrimp. My wife, a vegetarian, ordered the poblano roll, one of approximately two items on the menu not featuring meat. My food arrived first, and the dynamite roll was deeply unsettling. Instead of traditional sushi rice, they had sort of a super compressed rice glob encasing the interior ingredients. In fairness, the interior ingredients were probably fine, if unexciting. The salmon on top, however, was vile. It was cut extremely thin, and folded over on itself. The color of the salmon, if indeed that's what it was, was a muted pink, appropriate for neither cooked salmon nor the raw salmon one traditionally associated with sushi. In the few bites I tried of the dynamite roll (not the salmon), any flavor of the interior ingredients was entirely overtaken by the blandness of the compressed rice blob. The ceviche was fine. Finally, my wife's roll arrived, and after she started to bite into it, she realized that the main ingredient appeared to be chicken, despite this not being a listed ingredient. Otherwise, the theoretically baked roll was luke warm, and covered in a congealed poblano sauce and corn kernels. Although my wife stopped eating after she realized there was chicken in the roll, I tried some of the chicken to be sure that's what it was. Either they used canned chicken for this dish, or someone figured out an uncanny simulacrum of canned chicken. Also, given we were the only customers, it is borderline impressive that this roll wasn't served hot. We had bad vibes from the start, from the weird ambiance, to the lack of customers, to the extensive menu featuring sushi, Sonoran food, Italian food, Cuban food, and countless other options. Should have listened to our gut and given this one a pass.

Mexican/Italian food meets sushi? After reviewing the 21 page menu I just decided on a carne Asada quesadilla because the sushi combinations didn't seem very appealing. Our hostess and waitress were very friendly however they weren't very attentive to our needs and we weren't even offered a glass of tap water for 20 minutes. Very small restaurant with only a few tables.

grandes rollos! perfecto para parejas, familia y amigos buena vibra y grande servicio gracias por cumplir antojos con estilo!

NEW OWNERS! Food was amazing and the service was great. The new owners changed the previous system and the quality of everything was much improved.

Portions were big, recommend getting fried rolls! No music playing which was a little weird. Would go back though!

The coffee and baked goods were phenomenal, but the real standout for me was the breakfast sandwich. Who knew such simple ingredients on a brioche bun could come together like a work of art? Every bite was balanced and incredibly satisfying. And the staff? Absolutely wonderful. Their warmth and hospitality honestly gave Southern hospitality a run for its money. One of those places that makes your morning feel special.

This wouldn't…read morehave been our first time dining there and I made the decision out of lots of favorite restaurants. We ordered mocktails, as she's 17 and I rarely drink, and they were truly refreshing and delicious. Our server, I've forgotten his name, was tall, friendly and patient when I requested to stagger service, as it was a Sunday evening at 1630. The bread and oil was ok, calamari app was good, mostly tentacles and felt as if a third of the plate was just breading afterwards because we got the bottom of the bag from the freezer. For entrees, my daughter had the ragu bolognese and it was 4 minutes away from being al dente, the pasta was uncooked and tough. I wanted to send it back but my daughter said she would "just eat it". I usually get pasta or branzino, but this time I opted for the roasted chicken and it was the most insipid dish I have ever tasted. The chicken was boiled or sous vide and then given char marks on a grill, not roasted, not herbed, just charred. The au jus an overly salted corn starch thickened glaze. The broccolini and polenta on side were good and that's what I ate. The chef needs to fix this item or take it off the menu expeditiously. During dining service we felt bad for the several servers who were dealing with 2 screaming kids running through the dining room and out onto the patio. Several times bumping into servers with trays, the parents, cocktail in hand, barely did anything to attempt to stop them. As a restaurant, if something happened to those children, tray with piping hot pasta, it would be your responsibility, so next time kindly ask them to leave. It was loud and wrong and not the fault of your servers. All in all, I will have to take Locale off my list of restaurants to recommend for Italian food in Tucson, it was always the first place I recommend.

Food arrived just 15 min later and was piping hot and delicious. The lasagna is a good sized portion (roughly 5x7) and is generously filled with meat. Taste is amazing with medium-firm pasta and a nice crust across the top and sides. The ricotta calzone came with a side of marinara (yay) for dipping as there is no sauce inside. Roughly 2 dozen toppings are available, ranging from $3-$8+. I opted for the (priciest) meatballs ($8.50) and was slightly disappointed. The meatballs are crumbled within the calzone (understandable) but not pronounced in quantity. I would prefer larger pieces (halves work at this size - after all I ordered meat-ball not meet-ground ;) However, for $8 (a 75% upcharge) my chief gripe is that I was simply expecting more. Next time pepperoni/mushrooms! Ambiance is lovely and waitstaff were awesome - gracious, knowledgeable about menu specifics, and attentive. Parking is free/easy at this corner of a small strip mall. Can't wait to try their new Detroit menu too! Note: due to Rene's smaller size (less than 10 tables total) and high demand, all reservations (any day) require a credit card to hold. This is entirely understandable as even one no-show is a measurable hit to keeping a full house. I also have kids yet 100% embrace their patio-only policy. This literal mom/pop (they have kids too) venue tries to do the impossible balance between clientele and intimate, high-end dining (we simply accommodate by getting take out when feeding the Whole family ;)

The murals on the walls are super cool too. I loved how they had hand sanitizer at the table. Seating is pretty limited, so I'd definitely make a reservation. Service was great and everything tasted super fresh. We ordered the Meatballs & Jalapeño Cream, Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Garlic Knots, Papas con Queso Pizza, Penne Arrabbiata, and Tiramisu. Everything was amazing but my favorites had to be the meatballs and the pizza. Only downside was that they were out of lemonade, which I really wanted to try. But the food was so good that I'lol for sure be back, so I'll just grab it next time.

Busy on a Weds 330PM shortly after doors open, after 2 days off, but understand it fills up even own the patio and after tasting you'll know why :) Fine dusted parm topped a zesty house dressed $13 Caesar that was pre-split for sharing. House croutons need more of a blast in that wooded oven to crisp up as they were limp and doughy but still polished off the greens. 4/5* Love me some Mortadella and hard to find on menus even in an Italian Grinder here, so my focus lasered in on Tony Balona $18 with Burrata, smoked mozz (didn't taste any smoke) and pistachio dust (very minimal at center, wah), thick swirls of pistachio pesto and switched red sauce for garlic oil, a thin simple sauce. Pistachio not really noticeable in pesto or dust, I really enjoyed my pie, though its not as complex tasting as you might believe. Dough with it's black blisters definitely shines. 5/5* Hub's Classic Pepperoni $17 was flooded in lil' crispy cups; devoured! Happy Hour Bonus 3-6P weekdays, $2 off Appys incl our Salad. $10 cocktails ($6 off!) and $6 Drafts & house wines. Beechwood Brewing centraholic West Coast IPA 7% ABV, a Golden hoppy entry with med bitter to end, Light body and lasting Creamy head was a great pizza accompaniment, as was a regular vs White Negroni on menu. Had an herbal syrup less bitter front than a typical in your face Campari sip. Service was efficient. Water carafe to table on seating. Sure hope they save the water left over given the constant desert shortage, as we only drank 1/3 due to our ABV glasses. On Penelope return, I'll fight to try the fresh pasta unless the Dough menu punches me into submission again! Haha

The space is lovely of course, with tons of courtyard view windows. We did run into a broken chair when we sat down, but that was easily remedied (hopefully it was permanently removed from the floor). Our server was also tending bar, so he was stretched a bit thin, but overall the service was solid. He happily went back to the kitchen in a couple of questions he couldn't answer, but was overall very knowledgeable. He recommended a white wine made by a relative of the restaurant owner and it was lovely. We started with the octopus. I didn't expect this starter to be cold, but the tender octopus, fingerling potatoes and olives were a great combo in the acidic sauce. Would most certainly order it again. My main was the short rib. Short rib is always a heavy dish, but the vegetable risotto and asparagus helped lighten it a bit and it was tender and delicious. I probably ate 1/3, but I'm not sad to have generous leftovers. My dining companion had the veal, which was also excellent. I finished my meal with the crème caramel, which was very traditional and exactly as expected (which is what I want in a dessert like that). I'm very happy to dine here more often than every ten years.

Even though the restaurant was open for business they did not answer the phone! Warning! I finally had my call answered in the evening and made our reservation and informed them that we were interested in the 'Cheese Wheel Linguine' as you are required. We were then informed while ordering that they would not be doing the 'wheel' due to 'callouts' that night. OK, so I tried to order (4) different bottles of Chardonnay and they were out of three of them. We started with an appetizer of 'calamari' and it came 'burnt' and like rubber. We also ordered their famous Caesar Salad and were never served. We then decided to order a pizza which was served to us cold, uncooked and doughy. The poor wait staff and cooks are not managed correctly and were well over whelmed with no help. I was informed that the restaurant has 'new ownership' as they were purchased by 'Flying Leap Vineyards' and have been recently having staffing issues, inventory issue's and the new owners have cut back on everything. They did credit us on our bill for the cold uncooked pizza and the burnt calamari that was not edible. Our waiter felt so bad but, as we told him it was not his fault we were leaving without eating dinner 90 minutes later. Flying Leap Vineyards needs to somehow overcome this type of quality and improve things in a hurry otherwise ' just shut the doors' and sell Wine!
