We stopped by because my wife used to shop here with her parents in the 1960's when her family went to "the farm" that her grandad owned. This is a classic country store/restarant/meat shop. We completely enjoyed talking with the folks here. The owner, Bunkies Daughter, had tales to tell. She knew my wife's grandad. The place exudes "general store" DNA. Mr. Bunky's is a staple, even almost a year after his passing. Decades of good groceries and restaurant. Daily breakfast and lunch is served, along with pizza and subs on certain days during lunch. BLT is good, meat and two is good, sweet tea is good, western omelet with white sausage gravy is good, cole slaw is great...enjoy all of it! Miss the salad bar greatly! Staff is friendly from the restaurant to grocery and meat market to check-out counter. Southern, nostalgic, nature, military artwork fill the restaurant walls for the interior ambiance. This is such a cute thrift store / market. My bf has been here a few times and I have really been wanting to come. Downstairs is a mix of hardware, convenient store, meat shop, and restaurant, while upstairs is a cute thrift store type vibe. They have tons of trinkets and cute things for all ages. We have found a few nice things for our home here. My bf really enjoys the meat shop because they have fresh meat for a good price. Last time he got some thick cut bacon and it was so good! I really would like to try their restaurant next time. That will be my next review. But the staff was super nice as well. Unfortunately Mr. Bunky himself passed away shortly before our visit but they had his hat holding his place at the table in memory of him This is a super funky off the beaten path general store/thrift store/restaurant. Clearly a locals favorite hangout -- serving southern comfort food. A real slice of old SC, you will be treated like family. I didn't eat here so maybe it's not entirely fair to "review" the establishment. I went in at 7:00. The sign on the door indicated OPEN. There were staff inside, but it seemed eerily quiet. Okay, we're the first ones there. We asked about ordering breakfast and was told it would be a "minute". When asking for more definitive time frame we were told the grill had just been turned on (we noticed the coffee was just being started too at now 7:10) and to expect at least a 20 minute delay. So they open at 7:00 but don't expect any food prior to 7:30. We decided to leave. We were polite and they were polite, bless their hearts, but if you open at 7:00 you should be ready to take orders at that time. Look on the map, there's a great place to eat less than a mile away to the east. Yes, Mr. Bunky's is quirky - hardware store, general store, meat market and restaurant - but it's not going to survive with this approach to feeding people. Bless their hearts. read more

Talk about unexpected surprise. When we first walked in I wasn't sure I wanted to eat lunch and Mr. Bunky's. It's a general store so the first thing I saw was PVC pipe and dog food. After we got back to the dining area and I got my order I was glad I didn't act in the first instincts, I was wrong. I had the burger with fries, burgers are kind of my thing. The burger had the perfect sized angus patty, cooked to perfection and juicy. The toppings were very crisp and fresh. The bread was just the right amount of toasted outside and soft inside. Needless to say, the burger was amazing. I could have had two! I chose the hand cut fries over the crinkle fries and they were equally good. Crispy outside and soft but firm inside. I was blown away at how good it was. Nice job Mr. Bunky's. Just a side not- my friends had the catfish plate and said it was delicious also. Mr. Bunky's also had a hot bar style meals available (a meat and 2-3 vegetable or sides) and the line was out the door for that. It looked really good and I noticed the staff was constantly bringing new pans of food out while we were there having lunch. The next time I'm up in this area there's no doubt I'll be back to Mr. Bunky's. I hear the breakfast is good too read more

Went here for the first time today based on a recommendation from a couple of biker friends that had stopped in at an earlier date. Mr Bunky's has a fairly extensive menu and they had a salad bar. One of us ordered off the main food line (choice of fried chicken or cubed steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and cornbread. My other friend and I both opted for the fried catfish, curly fries and salad bar. Salad bar was basic with a good selection of dressings. The Blue Cheese dressing was good and the chunkiest blue cheese I've seen in a while. They had a good potato salad at the bar also. Other than that, pretty standard. They brought our fish to the table. Two filets of catfish. Curly fries were okay. I thought the fish was sort of dry and over cooked. Not the best that I've had. Doubt if I would order it again. I wasn't as impressed as I'd thought. The prices are very reasonable. Atmosphere is just a diner type hooked onto the rest of the store where they have a meat market, hardware, antiques, grain and dog food/supplies. Little hodgepodge of everything. It was worth the trip to see the place but doubt if I'd make the trip again. If you're actually going by it's a good place to get a bite to eat at a nice price. I stopped here with my grandson on Saturday on our way back in to Columbia from the Shaw Air and Space Expo. Oh my.... What beautiful and fond memories of me bringing my 2 sons (now in their latter 30's) on our way each and every time to Myrtle Beach. So blessed to be able to share this Mr. Bunky's experience with my baby boys' baby boy . We were fortunate to be able to take the time to dine in and I must say that the food and service was as fabulous as I had always remembered from my yesteryears. I have always liked this place. It's a fun place to bring visitors. Where else can you get baby chicks, plumbing supplies, bread, electrical supplies, used appliances, order meat from the butcher, browse consignment stores upstairs and have a meal in their restaurant. :) We went last night for a couple of good, fresh hamburgers and then wandered around the store. My husband and I both immediately noticed a difference in the store. It seemed a bit more organized and a whole lot cleaner than ever before. The food here is amazing. You can choose from their selections of meat /veggies (1 meat, two veggies, $7.95ish?) the fried and baked chicken is amazing! Along with the macaroni and cheese! Their burgers are huge and amazing. They have a salad bar as well. The food isn't even the best part though, upstairs there is quite a selection of eclectic items to browse through. I have been in town for business for just over one week and this little jewel of a place is within a 5 min drive for lunch from there. Needless to say that I have been at Bunky's for lunch everyday. Moreover, yesterday was my birthday and I chose to eat a steak from Mr. Bunky's and it was delicious. It was mentioned to me that their steaks are cut in the butcher shop part of Mr. Bunky's when you place your order. It was great! That brings up another point. Mr. Bunky's is one of the few places in this world where you can stroll through the store, buy some plumbing materials, and then eat some of the South's best food. God bless you, Mr. Bunky. i give the "restaurant" a solid 4 stars. They have a perfectly adequate meat-and-side selection and excellent fried dishes. They can cook a decent steak or burger, and the quality is fairly consistent. The eating area does lack ambiance, though. If fluorescent lighting and complete silence aren't your ideal dinner companions, you might want to bring a lamp and a Walkman to complement your meal. The "market" merits a 5th star, possibly a 6th. From hardware and garden supplies to antiques and historic farm implements, Mr. Bunky's is an exceptional country store in a remote area lacking comparable amenities. Definitely worth a drive from Columbia or Sumter for at least one visit. read more

Everyone has that hole in the wall restaurant that they love, the place that from first look should not be open. That is exactly what Mr. Bunky's displays. It is an old store in the middle of nowhere. It has everything from hardware to a book exchange. The restaurant is drab and poorly decorated. I would never have chosen to eat at this place if it weren't for my dad, who will eat anywhere. The food that we both received was outstanding. No frills, nothing fancy just well prepared, great tasting food. I had a boneless pork chop and my dad had fried catfish. I usually detest catfish, this actually tasted great. The restaurant has a mom and pop type feel to it which was nice. The staff were friendly, nothing like southern hospitality. Driving by one wouldn't be left with an ideal first impression. From the outside Bunky's looks like an old barn turned general store with a few Citgo pumps out front. I never even realized there was a restaurant inside until today. It's located on Garner's Ferry just East of McEntire JANG. If you're from the Sumter/Shaw area then Bunky's is comparable to Sarah's on 441, but larger. They have a menu and also a small salad bar but their big seller seemed to be the special of the day which was an entree (today was chicken) and two sides with cornbread and a drink. There was a long line over there so I ordered a BBQ sandwich and fries off the menu. Most of the food was pre-prepared stuff (frozen fries, the BBQ was the same stuff you could pick up at Food Lion in the tub) which is ok but the prices were a bit high. My sandwich was $4.50, the 8 fries I got were $1.50 and another $1.50 for the tea. The place was a little busy but I was also disappointed that it took 15 minutes to get my food, especially since the guy with us who ordered the same items got his immediately. If you're out at McEntire then it's a decent lunch spot since there's not much else to offer in the area unless you want to drive on in to Columbia. It's definitely no Sarah's, however... read more
