This place is amazing highly recommend it! Burritos so good you will want to go back time and time again

The name Mr. Burrito does not inspire confidence. It sounds more Americanized than even the likes of Pancheros or Qdoba. But boy was I wrong. This place is as authentic as it gets. Some good signs before you even ate their tacos - their fridge is stocked with Jarritos and they sell phone cards - phone cards! The tacos are great, and you can order them with pretty much anything - from the usual carne asada to the more exotic affairs of various internal organs. The tamales are great. It's made with banana leaves (Peruvian style) instead of the traditional Mexican corn husks. Tasty nonetheless. The only other place in Ames that has tacos that's even close to being as good is Angie's Cantina. Now I don't have to go to all the way to Des Moines to get real Mexican food. My boyfriend and I must've gone right before closing, because the lone fellow in there was out of almost everything. Despite my sudden urge to leave and go to the Fighting Burrito, I had read that Mr. Burrito was good, so I gave it a shot. I expected, like the Fighting Burrito, that he either had more food going or would offer to make more (specifically the veggies), but he just shook his head and said no. I love Mexican cuisine and I eat it often. This is easily the best burrito I have ever had. The barbacoa beef is seasoned perfectly, and the hot sauce selection is incredible. The hot sauces aren't your typical vinegar-based crap: they're well-crafted blends that add a prefect finishing touch to the burritos. In addition to gread food, the service is great, too. This place used to be one of my favorites in town. My opinion has since changed since they thought they could get away with charging extra for sour cream. Seems to me like they are willing to be lazy and not be open during regular hours but are completely willing to charge an unnecessary amount for a god given right to a burrito. In a town saturated in mediocre Tex Mex, this place really shines. The tamales, wrapped in banana leaves, are why I first came to this place. The pork (or chicken) is in perfect balance with the moist but not soggy masa. The tacos are wonderful, especially since they use corn tortillas. They double up the tortillas to stand up to everything you could want in them. My favorite, though, are the tortas. By far one of my favorite sandwiches, right up there with the Cuban. Also, they sell soda in glass bottles. My favorite is their grapefruit, though you can also get a classic Coca-Cola which is always a treat. I can't wait till this place starts delivering. read more

Mr. Burrito has become a favorite of my friends and I. I tend to miss my mother's cooking, but Mr. Burrito's authenticity makes me feel right at home. The employees are incredibly welcoming and love what they do and will provide some of the best service I've found in Ames. They embrace the college campus and are not afraid to serve hungry students after a football game. The rice is delicious, as well as the tacos, if you are looking for more than just a burrito. They also have Coca-Cola de Mexico, great with a slice of lime. Cannot recommend this place enough, so don't be put off by the name! read more

The food here is as good as it gets in town. Ames has no business having a taco/burrito joint this good. The food is real and made with real soul. Family operated, small operation, but it is better than anything else - fine dining or otherwise - in Ames. No pretension, just true, honest and consistently produced food. Home made salsas range from as midwestern and in-offensive as possible to truly delicious up to true hot-head heat - macha, habanero, and more. Small joint, 4-6 tables. Always a line for lunch, I don't make it out to Welch ave on weekend late nights, but I would bet its busy then too if they are open. Solid burrito establishment. The rice is bomb. Love the crazy variety of hot sauces. The owner is friendly. The queso is some good queso. Wish it had some sort of hot peppers added to it though. This restaurant is my guilty pleasure. It's very similar to the restaurant chains Pancheros and Chipotle, only it's way more convenient for on-campus students at Iowa State University. It's also relatively average on the price scale, so nothing too crazy there. The food is delicious and tastes fresh. The workers are also incredibly nice and quick at their job; they have it down to a science! It's a very small shop, but is easy to take to go if you need too. They have a surprisingly large menu, and a multitude of drinks to choose from as well. I typically find myself going to Mr. Burrito about once a month and ordering my go-to burrito. The best part of this shop, is it is truly an ethnic Mexican burrito place. read more

This is the best burrito/taco stand in Ames, bar none. The authentic steak tacos are better than sex. Most places (Panchero's, Fighting Burrito, etc.) completely load you up on rice and various other filler...Mr. Burrito, his budy, and his daughter would never do such a thing and don't give you a hard time when you specify "no rice" or "lettuce and more beans instead of rice" as has happened to me when I've gone to Fighting Burro. If he had more space, I'm sure that place would be rockin' hard. Best carne asadas in down. Authentic mexican food. Friendly service, not too expensive. This is our one shop stop for great mexican food. If you want Mexican food and are in Ames, I would highly recommend Mr. Burrito (specifically the tacos). Actually I would only recommend Mr. Burrito. These are hands down the BEST tacos I've ever eaten in my life, I go almost every day. Compared to other places in Ames and on ISU campus if you're a student, Mr. Burrito is a SIGNIFICANTLY better choice than any other Mexican food nearby (including Fuzzy's, Es Tas, Pancheros, Chipotle...etc.). I've tried all the tacos in Ames so far and I mean Mr. Burrito literally blows all of the other places out of the water, and is relatively inexpensive if you're living on a budget. They have the most authentic Mexican food I've ever had in my life, and the owners are the sweetest people. I believe everything is homemade and there are options for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. I love Mr. Burrito soooo soooo sooo sooo soooo much and I hope this convinced you to go eat their tacos. The most delicious tacos that I've eaten since I left my semester in Mexico. I've gotten hung up on the tacos (with corn tortilla and barbacoa), but I'm looking forward to trying the sopa, the tamales, and a torta as well. The owner/operator/cook is friendly and will help you make a decision if some of the food is unfamiliar to you. It's "cozy", but comfortable and there's a fridge full of Jarritos. It's not an exclusively burrito place, so don't go there expecting what you get at Fighting Burrito / Pita Pit / Chipotle - style restaurants. Go there expecting authentic quick Mexican food, and you will not be disappointed. Solid and authentic tacos. The owner guy is very friendly and I always feel welcome. If you get the tacos (which I suggest), I'd go for the carnitas or al pastor, w/ cilantro and onion, of course. He quickly fries the tortillas in some sort of grease/oil which makes them crispy and extremely delicious. I enjoy most of the sauces too; the chipolte-cream sauce is nice if you don't want something spicy. If you do, I'd suggest macha. I ate at Mr. Burrito for the first time a week ago and have eaten twice there since then. I've been in Ames for 8 years and it is bar none the best Mexican food in town. The barbacoa is amazing, and the quesdillas are so stuffed with cheese that my kids coudn't even finish them. We will be back, and often. read more

Best place to get tacos and burritos in Ames!

The food is REALLY GOOD with no doubt, however, the old guy, which I assume is the owner, is a horrible person. I had my usual dish as a triple meat burrito, I had it for over 5 times, EVERY TIME IS AROUND $12, but today when I had it with him, he literally charged me for $16. At first I thought he had it wrong so I did not ask, but then he just charged without asking me at all. When I questioned him of the price difference he told me is because of the tax... ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THE TAX IS 0.07 HOW THE HECK COULD IT BE $4? Overall, great good, good service when you have ANYONE ELSE BUT HIM. Not only that he charges wrong, he also gives the smallest serving EVER. NEVER GOING BACK WHEN HE'S THERE. read more

I love Mexican food, and Mr. Burrito is my favorite in Ames. What separates them from other is their thin, authentically made flour tortillas (for the burritos) and nongreasy tostada shells. Haven't had their tacos yet but I can't imagine why they would disappoint considering how delicious their burritos and tostadas are. Most definitely will be coming back often! This place is very small and unassuming. After searching all around to find some place open and not totally packed, I decided to go in here out of sheer hunger. I was pleasantly surprised. The man behind the counter was really nice and gave great recommendations. I had a burrito with barbacoa, basically all of the toppings, and Piquin sauce. The Piquin is delicious and just spicy enough. Don't pass on this place just because it's small. read more

One of those hole-in-the-wall places that has solid food. The portions are large and flavorful. In the process of getting your burrito made, fillings may get accidentally dropped into other bins-I noticed ground beef drippings and chunks falling into the pinto beans. They don't really seem to care about that. So if you have strict dietary concerns, such as the mixing of certain food items, you might want to reconsider. read more
