A few blocks east of Duff Road on the south side of Lincoln Way, Rico's Tacos is a wonderful combination of customer service, personality, and a quality food product. We visit Ames frequently for family and were comparing taco trucks on Yelp before making our initial trip to Rico's. Manny was working the truck and is a good guy who knows his product. He guided me to their burrito, which was amazing. The tortilla did not fall apart, and its contents were spectacular, merging asada beef with scrambled eggs and other items to yield a great meal. I loved both of their sauces, with the red-hot red narrowly defeating the tasty green salsa! There is a lot of parking in this location, and the truck's staff makes it a positive experience due to their interaction and people skills. A taco truck isn't supposed to be an elegant experience! We found Ricos on our drive back from Des Moines to the twin cities of resturaunts not far off of 35 and the moment I saw the reviews I knew this is where we needed to go! Having grown up on the west coast, good authentic Mexican is something I miss now living here and Rico's could put the best of the places back home to the test! I had heard rumors from many people that this was a must-visit place in Ames. With it being my graduation from ISU, my family decided to try a new place before I leave. We each got something different: chicken quesadillas, chicken tacos, steak nachos, and burrito. They were all very good, warm, and made as requested. The wait was not too long even with several groups waiting. We had excellent service and they did their best to encourage social distancing and cleanliness. Since recently beginning working in Ames everyone said I had to try Rico's. They did not disappoint. I tried the carne asada tacos and the chicken nachos. The taco were awesome. The salsa was pleasantly spicy. The asada was perfectly cooked. The chicken nachos were also good but next time I will stick to what a taco truck is best for and just do tacos. They do have the buzzers so you can wait for your order in your car on a less than perfect weather day. They do take credit cards but prefer cash. read more

I am a native Texan and this tastes just like back home! Looks right, prices are right, and good ole Mexican food made by a Mexican family. They've got multiple park benches and an awning/tent thing so there's shade and space for a good 20 or so customers to sit at a time. They aren't that fluent in English, just the very basics, so I wouldn't recommend throwing a million substitutions or questions. It's a taco truck and a taste of Mexico in Iowa. Being back in the Ames area after five years, we had a hankering for some authentic Mexican food. There are plenty places in Racine, WI but we weren't sure about Ames or surrounding areas. You must realize this is NOT Tex-Mex. This one is the real deal! I'm a Bean Burrito nut. This one is Hands Down the Best beans I've EVER had! Not puréed. Whole beans and the flavor is amazing. I ordered the burrito, Beans only. The sauces are Very Good! Flavorful. Hot is pretty hot, gotta say. My husband had Carne Asada's. Excellent. Onion and Cilantro. Jalapeño. He said they were excellent. The meat is moist and flavorful. We will be in Ames today. We WILL be stopping by again. I'm so thrilled we found this little gem of a food truck. read more

I never seem to drive on Duff, south of Lowes, but a friend clued me in to Rico's when we were talking about La Bamba. Rico's is another great place for tacos. I had three with lengua and they were nearly perfect. I loved both the red and the green salsas, but particularly the red. The tortillas are lightly fried, but not greasy. The tongue was moist and flavorful and aside from needing a sprinkle of salt, it was perfect. I need to return for cabeza. I don't know how to choose between La Bamba and Rico's. If these places are open when you are hungry, stay out of the gringo Mex places like La Fuente. read more

Food trucks can offer up some really good food. Some of Ames' best cuisine can be found at one of the many food trucks parked in various spots throughout the community. Rico's Tacos has two things going for it - 1) everyone (and I mean everyone) in town talks about their great food and 2) every time I go by there on E. Lincolnway there are people waiting in line to get their products. That can be the case at 2:30pm or even way after some restaurants have closed for the night. For those that don't like food trucks you really don't know what you're missing. Rico's makes some of the best tacos I've had anywhere. These are as authentic as they get. You'd be hard-pressed to find a taco that is more authentic or tastes better than the one you can get at Rico's truck. They make other Mexican items (such as enchiladas) but when I visit a taco truck it's all about the tacos. They have some really yummy sauces to add to your tacos. The green chile sauce has great flavor and if you want to spice things up a bit try the yellow sauce. They have a nice menu for a food truck and their prices are actually quite reasonable. I can't really think of any drawbacks other than it would be nice if there were more places to sit around the truck. The day I visited there was just one picnic table out and it filled up quickly. Otherwise, it was a great experience. I recommend it. read more

I visited both Alluvial and Torrent for some great microbrew this weekend. At both stops was a Rico's Tack Trailer. The Alluvial version was more like a camper, while there was an RV at Torrent. I tried the tacos at Torrent. They were fresh, delicious, not heavy, and with a nice green salsa on top. And there's nothing like a cold cerveza to compliment the meal. Burritos are one of my favorite foods, and I've spent the last several years (in various cities) trying to find the best one. While it's hard to crown a winner, this burrito definitely carried its weight. I've tried both the steak and marinated-pork burritos, and they're both excellent. Everything we had--quesadillas, tacos of various types--was fantastic. The prices are awesome ($1.50 for a well-stuffed taco). The server we spoke to was friendly and helpful. There's only one table, but there's lots of space on the grass if you want to throw down a blanket. I have been here a few times now and just love it! First and foremost, the people are friendly and make sure their service is quick. The food takes me back to the street food in Mexico and after I had their nachos the first time, I have been hooked. The cheese sauce is awesome and they will customize them anyway you ask. The bean, cheese and jalapeño tamale is delish and authentic as well. But my favorite part of the meal is the sauce or salsa. The green, the red or the hot are Absolutely fantastic. I love this food truck. I wish it lived outside my house. Two of us leave full for $18. That said, the food is traditional, flavorful and delicious. I really enjoy the hot red sauce and the green sauce mixed. I typically order three tacos. Pork, chicken and beef. That is because I cannot decide which is my favorite. Excellent Fare. The Burrito comes with fresh lettuce tomato & avocado slices. There is a flavorful green sauce and a yellow sauce with some kick if you desire. My family loves it.
