OK, here's the story... My son found a used Les Paul copy on craigslist the other day, and since the price seemed about right, we made the trek out to Lemon Grove to check it out. When we stepped into Mr. Joey's shop, it was like traveling back in time. I can't tell you enough how helpful, cool and knowledgeable these guys are. We ended up talking about the local music scene back in the 80's, old vinyl record shops around town and growing up in San Diego while playing in local bands along the way. (Them, not me...) At the end of the night, we ended up walking out of there with a killer used guitar that was set up perfectly and ready to play, a 1980's vintage Roland BOSS MG-10 practice amp for home, a new set of electric guitar strings and a Marshall Amp single floor switch. (Plus a super-stoked high school senior!) The price was very very reasonable, and we actually felt guilty leaving there - thinking that we were under-charged! The shop looks like it's been around for years. They also offer service, lessons, rentals and sales. There were a number of vintage amps on the floor, and a good selection of guitars - both electric and acoustic, along with other instruments like ukulele's etc. When it comes time to make my next purchase or if we're looking for service on musical instruments, I'll head there first - highly recommended!! Don't take your gear to GC. This is an old school music store that does repairs and sales. It will be my first stop from now on. Bought a clip on tuner and a Korg tm40 for $40, saved a drive to Sam Ash. Almost everything that I needed was there, GC didn't have it either. read more

This shop is new, so I decided to check it out and see what's in store. The owner and staff are very customer oriented, which is such a bonus after dealing with Gtr Ctr. These cats live for music and I can appreciate that as well. I went in to check out basses and they had some unique items; a bass for the traveler, a stand up bass, which i had to try. This place is awesome! I just purchased my first guitar yesterday from craigslist. I snapped several strings in the process of trying to tune. I went to Mr. Joey's today to purchase new strings and as soon as I walked in the door he greeted me the way customers are supposed to be greeted. He not only replaced the strings that needed replacing and tuned it for me but he also cleaned and lubricated the guitar to where now it looks brand new. I tried to give a tip for the amount of time he spent with me and my guitar but he would only take the price of the strings. It's not very often you find a business that gives great customer service like Mr. Joey's. He offers hour long weekly lessons at an incredible rate. This place is definitely worth checking out. I am soo happy i took my guitar to get fixed here. Support your local shops. They charged a very affordable price. My tuner peg had broken off and for this reason had not played my guitar in a long while. They changed the peg plus re did my strings and sanded down my bridge saddle. It was way too high it was nearly impossible to play high notes. Now its way more comfortable to play and the strings are much lower. I appreciate they correctly stringing of my guitar. read more

The best kept music shop secret in town. This place brings back the way real music shops use to be. I recently took a Spector bass in there to have preamp installed and Bill the in house tech did a absolutely fantastic job!! Mr. Joeys Music store in Lemon Grove has some good bass gear and great prices, but he has a high turn around on everything that is in the store and stuff comes in and goes out all the time, so you never know what you will find there also it is a small store so if you do not see what you are looking for just ask because he will probably have something stored away in the back. Joey is also more then fair if you bring in gear to sell, and he gives the most for trade in value towards other gear IMHO. If Joey does not have it, but you let him know what you are looking for he'll call you when he comes across it just ask and he will usually get back to you in a couple weeks because he knows people, a lot of people who are looking or who have gear. read more

Just awful! I scheduled my daughter for her first guitar lesson and we go to the studio and it was closed for renovations. We didn't get a call from anyone telling us. I called and the phone just rang and rang. We wasted our time and gas. I found King Music that same day and they gave her a lesson right then and there. And to make it worse I bought my daughter's guitar at Joey's for $70.00 and King Music was selling the same exact guitar for $39.99. Music King's lessons were also cheaper. And come to find out another customer from Joey's was also at Music King signing up their child because they had a class and the studio was closed when they went. A Pignose G40v 40 watt combo amp needed some work. I was referred by another music store to Billy Mitchell, the amp/all things electrical tech at Mr. Joey's Music. They gave me a very reasonable price range for what I wanted done, and I brought the amp in. It was ready in one day, the price was lower than quoted, all work was done carefully and well. The owners and Billy were very informative, friendly, and cordial.Really good guys and a good shop. I'm very happy to find a place like this so close to where I live (College area/Rolando).
