Such a unique and beautiful place!! This toy store and bookstore is such a cute place for kids and adults with a lot of history in the city. Most things in this store are pretty overpriced but it's worth the trip every blue moon. It's in a cute neighborhood with a nice storefront. Street parking only which can be limited but it's a nice walk over if you park a distance away. The service is always nice. The bookstore is such a cute addition. They give teachers free books sometimes which is cool. Overall we will keep coming back and recommending this place to others read more

Cute neighborhood shop. A bit chaotic, part of the charm. However, after choosing an item and taking it to checkout, the price rang up $5 more than the price marked on the tag. The clerks insisted that the higher price is the correct one, and therefore the price I need to pay. Strange sort of customer relations, I walked out without making the purchase and found the item elsewhere. Isn't it just basic to earn your customer's trust by respecting the customer's agreement to make a purchase for the price marked? Unfortunately left a very bad taste for me, and I've shopped there since my kids were little, now for grandchildren. Really makes online shopping more appealing. Wish this weren't so. read more

We love this store, they have unique gifts and their customer service is wonderful. We recently purchased several birthday gifts, to be shipped out of state. The store now uses UPS GROUND SAVER AND LAST MILE where UPS coordinates with USPS for residential deliveries. UPS picks up the item and USPS delivers it. Because both delivery services do not share systems, you are not guaranteed to receive a tracking number, which happened to us. I have notified the package recipient to inform us if the items are not delivered as scheduled. I will probably in the future purchase from another store where items can always be tracked. read more

This is the perfect store when shopping for kids of all ages. I love how they organize the store by ages so that I can easily find all the toys I care about for my nieces and nephews. In addition, they have an incredible book selection and every staff member is welcoming and attentive. Finally, they even have a gift wrap option for usually $1 so I don't even need to worry about wrapping the gifts (especially the oddly shaped ones) myself! Highly recommend! read more

I may NOT be a kiddo, but I do have the money to buy stuff there, and I'd like to say, DO NOT BUY THE 1.99 SLIDE WHISTLES! They do NOT work! I bought a bunch without trying them because ewe! Today I was there picking up more lil fun stuff, and asked the sales people if I could return them because they disappoint. They really tried to convince me that that is how slide whistles sound, then said what do you expect for 2 bucks! GEEZ! Anyway, also their bins of lil dinosaurs and animals and sea life is bare and spare! Been shopping here for over 30 years! WHY? Because they do not carry all the junk you can get anywhere else! I consider this store to focus more on creative play that stimulates minds, over what is "popular". I do miss the Stieff (may be spelled wrong) German animals. Only "complaint" is, parents tend to let kids get too loud and put their hands all over.... I get it, they get excited, but can we turn it down just a bit please? What a great toy store! They have a large selection and wide variety of toys including many of the cherished Fisher Price classics like the chatty telephone with a rotary dial and wiggly eyes, the Fisher Price cash register and the pull-tunes pull-along xylophone. This store has been around since 1962 delighting children and families with their excellent selection of classics and new editions, educational toys, STEM toys, board games, legos, manipulatives, exotic stuffed animals, and a multitude of toys that inspire the imagination. I like the statement that they have on their website: "We mostly carry toys that aren't on the mass market......We tend to not focus on toys that are "hot", but on toys that are really, really cool." Due to Covid there is currently no in-store browsing. You have to go online, make your choices, and then you have the option to pay online or pay at pickup. You can also have things sent. Their online shopping system during Covid is easy, efficient and seamless. My order was ready for pickup within 45 min! I like being able to pay at pickup-that's one less place to leave an electronic footprint with your credit card. It's nostalgic seeing some of the toys here that I remember from my own childhood. And as a young mother I would come here to buy toys for my own children and now I'm here again to look for toys for my grandbaby! This is definitely a go-to toy store. This is a fantastic toy store that people of all ages will love to wander through! I love their selection of Calico Critters and plush toys, including Jellycats. They have fun items like Calico Critter and Sonny Angel blind bags that appeal to teens/adults and of course tons of toys for little ones. The staff are super friendly and go above and beyond with recommendations for alternate items and stores to check if they don't have the exact item you're looking for. Their pricing is basically standard so no complaints there especially because it's nice to support a small brick and mortar instead of online. I also appreciate that I was able to call and ask about a specific item, and they kindly put it on hold for a few days until I was able to come in. 5 stars for Claire and the rest of the staff at mr Mopps!! We were recently in to find a children's book to gift to someone and Claire was so sweet and super helpful with different recommendations. This store is a legendary local tradition. The selection of toys is kaleidoscopic: colorful, broad-ranging, and ever-changing. No dust collecting on the shelves here. Somehow the owner seems familiar with the specifics every item of his inventory, from Legos and building kits to stuffs and dolls to dress-ups and the real stethoscope that Tommy's pediatrician recommended. The staff is always knowledgeable and cheerful, a sign that they are treated respectfully and well. As a bonus, the owner is a musician, and keeps a good selection of real quality small-scale musical instruments, not just the cute-for-show almost-silent or out-of-tune xylophones, hokey ukuleles, and push-button electronics you'll find at other stores or online. Our family made a stop here from San Diego as a request from my son who had heard great things about the store. We were not disappointed! The shop is larger than I imagined and there were toys for every interest. It is a great place to look around. You will definitely find something for everyone. The staff was friendly and helpful. We called beforehand to make sure they would still be open because we were arriving around closing time. When we arrived staff was helpful and really friendly. We were so distracted by everything around us that we left a bag of purchased items at the store! The owner found our number from their call history and let us know that the bag was still at the store and if we needed any assistance getting it. Luckily we were still in town and were able to swing by and pick it up. We will be going back every time we come up here for a visit! read more

The toy shop of my childhood! I used to come with my mom and sisters back when Mr. Mopps spanned almost all the buildings. I fondly recall walking to the back to see the huge stuffed lion in the reading room, the telescopes and microscopes and cool science stuff, the random musical instruments and of course all the random knick knacks. My sisters and I loved coming here and it was always a treat! Those days have passed and now Mr. Mopps has been reduced to a little less than half the size with the toy shop on one end and a small bookstore separated by other shops in the middle. Mr. Mopps is still the place to go for educational toys, stuffed animals, and stocking stuffer knick knacks. I can still wander around this store for at least an hour looking at everything. This time around, I bought a plastic toy dragon for my coworker for less than a dollar (think Harry Potter type dragon), a small dog pencil sharpener for my college roommate for about $2.95, and a miniature die cast Lamborghini for my nephew for $0.99. They have everything from those bouncy rubber balls we used to get from the $0.25 vending machines at Lucky's to scented erasers and the lead stacking pencils that are scented. Mr. Mopps is definitely worth a visit if you can find parking and have some time to wander around a bit! read more

IMHO, this is the grandfather of independent toy stores and wears its age, experience, and offerings very well. So much so I guess, that there are currently 2 separate Yelp listings for Mr. Mopps. The store space is huge and with lots of nooks and crannies to explore and play. The selection and variety are equally impressive. Almost anything that you would want to buy is here from small little tschotchkes to things with larger shapes, sizes, and noises. There's also a modest book selection and a good choice of arts and crafts stuff. Prices are fairly reasonable, especially for the variety. Staff is also friendly and helpful. Parking can be a little challenging, but this is Berkeley after all. Best of all, this store is fun to be in. Mr. Mopps definitely throws off a happy vibe. And if you can't find the right toy here, the kid (of any age) probably doesn't need it. read more

It is a very fun store with a wide variety of toys: stuffed animals, board games, crafts, trains, legos, you name it.
